Changes to tomcat6 need not be uploaded to mentors, it is enough to
commit to svn and notify the maintainers (or submit a bug report with

I don't know, but I think that at least a clarification from the authors is
needed. Citing the license [1]:

"This program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it
under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the
Free Software Foundation ( version 2 of the License ); with the

Note especially the last two lines.

No, that's not after the license, but after the blurb which seems to state
that those requests are additional restrictions. (Actually they contradict
the GPL...)

But I agree that the intention is likely as you interpret it, so it should
not be difficult to get a clarification.

This is common with Java packages built with Maven, where a detailed commit
log is automatically generated and included in the sources. In that case I
prefer to leave out the commit log altogether since it's mainly useful for

I disagree. While a superfluous dh_* command or blank line here and there is
not technically wrong, being strict with new developers keeps them from
being sloppy and just minimally editing some templates. Instead they have
to check and understand every line. At least from my experience I have

Certainly not as a general rule, that would be horrible given the frequency

Users who care about orphaned packages can run deborphan regularly.

Hi!

No, it should only include the one line with "Initial release...". The
changes from upstream are considered packaging work, and do not need to be
recorded in the changelog. If you subsequently change things in the
packaging or upstream parts for future releases, you can record it in the
changelog (if it's interesting enough).

Looks good, but please do not indent the two lines
On Debian systems, the complete text of the GNU General Public

to separate them from the other blurb.

That's fine, it must be included in whole.

As you see it's only an informational message. I think your package is
correct, so just ignore it.

I don't think the repackaging of the upstream zip file into a tarball
warrants a README.Debian-source file, so I would remove that.

debian/docs has an extra blank line at the end.

module-assistant. You will see that debian/rules includes some files
from /usr/share/modass. The documentation for module-assistant has the
details.

> as I suppose that the module build process actually
> needs a control and a control.modules file, right?

For example, let's say that I'm packaging a module named "foo", with source
package name "foo". This is described by a control file as usual. It builds
a binary package called "foo-source", which essentially only contains an
archive of the module sources in /usr/src/foo.tar.bz2. The actual module is
built from the contents of that archive. The control.modules.in file is
processed by the module-assistant rules during module build, and renamed
to "control" (by replacing placeholders with the actual kernel version).
This generated control file describes the resulting binary module package
foo-module-${KVERS}.

I have prepared patches fixing some bugs (even RC) and sent them to the

The developers claim that 1.9.2 is not vulnerable, contrary to what was
stated in the advisory. See

My tests confirm this.

> Given that there've been four vulnerabilities in TikiWiki for 2005 alone,

There is a mechanism in place for reporting security problems:
  http://tikiwiki.org/TikiSecurity

Recent issues seem to have been fixed and patched in a timely manner.
Announcements are posted to mailing lists and on the web site. Changes
and workarounds were described in detail, see for example:
  http://tikiwiki.org/tiki-read_article.php?articleId=118

Of the recent security problems, one was in the XML-RPC library which is
part of PEAR. Since my package doesn't contain Tikiwiki's versions of
external libraries, it would have been fixed by the php-pear package.

For the code injection vulnerabilities, I have applied stricter access
controls in the Apache configuration, and plan to make further
restrictions to prevent these attacks.

I am looking for a sponsor for this package.

  Package name: tikiwiki
  Version : 1.9.2
Upstream Author : Luis Argerich, Garland Foster, Eduardo Polidor, et. al.
URL or Web page : http://tikiwiki.org
  License : LGPL
Description : groupware and content management system

Tiki CMS/Groupware, also known as TikiWiki, can be used to create all
sorts of web applications, web sites or portals. It offers a very
large number of features and is highly configurable and modular. All
features are administered through a web-based interface.

The package is perhaps not completely trivial for the following reasons:

*There were major changes to upstream's directory layout where
everything was unpacked into a single directory. I moved various
writable directories to proper locations.

*It uses dbconfig-common to configure and populate a database (MySQL or
PostgreSQL).

*Lots of third-party PHP code included in the tarball was replaced with
Debian's versions.

Therefore I would be happy if someone could take a good look at it and
help me make the final preparations for uploading.

The package would also need some more testing, so I'm grateful if people
want to try it out, but please read the warning in README.Debian and
don't try it on your production database please.

The package is available from mentors.debian.net.

Thanks,

Locating font files

2006-01-02 Thread Marcus Better
My application needs to locate font files for Type 1 fonts on the
system. Specifically, given a name which the user chooses, say "Courier"
or "Helvetica", the app needs to find a suitable pfb _and_ afm files for
these fonts. How do I do this?

Can I do this with either defoma or fontconfig?

I believe fontconfig doesn't provide the location of the afm file, only
the pfb. Without the font metrics the application cannot use the font.
Is there a solution to this problem?

Thanks,

Ok, so I think that defoma might help here, right?

If I make my application defoma-aware then it will be notified whenever
fonts are installed or removed from the system. Correct?

My next question is: When my application is first installed, how will it
find out about the fonts that are already installed on the system? If I
understand correctly, defoma will only help my app keep track of any
changes to fonts. Am I missing something here?

Thanks,

Marcus

My mistake, they seem to be freely distributable.

Using PostScript fonts

2005-12-26 Thread Marcus Better

Hello,

I am packaging TikiWiki. It includes pdf-php, a PDF generator written in
PHP:
  http://www.ros.co.nz/pdf/

This contains font metric files (afm) for Adobe's standard fonts
(Courier, Times, Helvetica etc). These are, to my knowledge, not freely
distributable (?), so I have to strip those.

(The actual code in pdf-php is public domain.)

I plan to use the fonts from the gsfonts package instead, which should
be almost equivalent, right? In addition, since pdf-php supports any
Type1 and TrueType fonts, it would be nice to let the user utilize all
such fonts installed on the system, not just the standard fonts.

Now I would like to know if there is a mechanism that can locate font
files (both afm and pfb) based on a name like "Courier" or "Helvetica"?
It would help if the mechanism were easily available from a PHP script.

Thanks,

Marcus

Versioning of unreleased test packages

Hello,

I am packaging some software and would like testers to try out my
packages. What is the best way to choose version numbers for the package
under development so that:
(1) Testers can use "apt-get upgrade" to download the next test versions
from my private repository as I make them available.
(2) Once the real version is uploaded to Debian, it will have version
number greater than all the test packages.

Thanks,

Marcus

Right, although sid has "axiom" (for most architectures).

Help with dbconfig-common

2005-10-18 Thread Marcus Better
Hello,

I am packaging tikiwiki, and want to use dbconfig-common for the
database configuration. I followed the instructions in the documentation
and looked at the examples, but it still yelling rude things at me.

First I installed my package and said NO to the first question, about
whether dbconfig-common should configure the databases at all. The
result was that dpkg failed to configure the package, giving the message:

  sanity check failed for dbc_dbtype

This makes sense since the dbtype (a debconf variable) was empty - as it
should be since I never got a chance to select a database type, having
answered that I would configure the database manually.

Every subsequent attempt to remove the package failed with the same
error. Finally I managed to get rid of the package by removing the
sanity check from one of the dbconfig-common scripts.

Then I installed the package again, and now told debconf to configure a
MySQL database for me. Now I get the following result:

$ sudo dpkg -P tikiwiki
(Reading database ... 201307 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing tikiwiki ...
dpkg: error processing tikiwiki (--purge):
subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 10
dbconfig-common: writing config to /etc/dbconfig-common/tikiwiki.conf
dbconfig-common: flushing administrative password
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 10
Errors were encountered while processing:
 tikiwiki

$ dpkg -l tikiwiki
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
|/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err:
uppercase=bad)
||/ Name   VersionDescription
+++-==-==-
pF tikiwiki 1.9.1-1groupware and content management system

So it looks like I'm doing something wrong with dbconfig-common. Can
someone point me in the right direction here?

Thanks,

Marcus B.
