It also implements a priority system where groups of daemons can be stopped and started with one command. All of this init script behaviour is configured using two configuration files - /etc/quagga/{debian.conf,daemons}. Yes, two configuration files to configure the behaviour of this one init script _in addition_ to the rather more common /etc/default/quagga. Needless to say this complexity is inconsistent any other daemon within Debian and with upstream (which implements a single init/service per routing daemon rather than one that controls them all). It's also rather error prone as illustrated by the number of bugs closed by switching to systemd. The fact that the init script is monolithic also leads to problems when trying to keep it along with the new .service files because there is no equivalent quagga.service. To keep /etc/init.d/quagga, I'd have to mask quagga.service in systemd, but that can always be unmasked by the administrator and cause issues with multiple services trying to start the same daemons. If all that wasn't enough, upstream also ship a "watchquagga" service whose sole purpose is to do the job that systemd now does for all daemons - restart services when they crash or hang. With systemd, "watchquagga" can be removed completely. I hope this doesn't come across as too critical of the existing init scripts - they've clearly served their purpose well. I just think that there's a better option now. So my answer is: I believe that a reasonable person coming to quagga for the first time would rather have an interface consistent with all their other services, instead of having to learn the intricacies and quirks specific to the quagga init scripts. However that person will have very different perspective to the Debian old-timer who was running quagga for a decade using the existing system and now has to learn something new (new, but consistent with every other service in a default Debian installation). As I said before, I'm open to keeping the existing init scripts. But only if a) someone else steps up to do the testing and ongoing maintenance of them, and b) the experience under systemd is not diminished. -- Regards, Scott. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

debexpo bug on upload
Hi, I've run into a bug[0] with debexpo making it impossible to upload my package. I suspect there's a partially uploaded package sitting in the system somewhere.. does anyone on this list have admin access to mentors.debian.net that could check this for me? Failing that, is there an alternative way to get the package reviewed? The package is "quagga". Using the alternatives system is an interesting idea. Yes, the "new" version is *not* a drop-in replacement - while the functionality is the same, accepted arguments are not totally identical. However the description and example given in the policy manual of different "vi" clones seems to match the "unclutter" situation quite well. Am I correct in understanding that using alternatives requires co-operation between the two packages, "unclutter" and "unclutter-fixes"? If that's the case, I'll approach the "unclutter" maintainer, and if they disagree on using alternatives, will just rename my package. -- Regards, Scott. signature.asc Description: Digital signature
When to use "Replaces"?
Hi all, I've just filed an ITP for "unclutter-xfixes"[0]. This package is a rewrite of the "unclutter" package. It provides the same functionality (hiding your mouse pointer after some period of inactivity), but uses a different API which may avoid some of the issues seen in "unclutter". Upstream's Makefile installs the binary and manpage as "unclutter" - it's clearly intended to be used in place of the original package. The policy manual describes using the "Replaces" (and "Breaks") control fields only to handle a package structure change on upgrade (e.g. split "foo" into "foo" and "foo-data")[1], but in that case the packages are co-operatively managed by the same maintainer. In the case of "unclutter" vs. "unclutter-fixes", it is less clear to me whether I should use "Replaces", because "unclutter-xfixes" is not a direct upgrade to "unclutter" (and I guess users may want to install both at the same time??). So should I: a) Patch the Makefile to rename the binary "unclutter-xfixes", with the downside of diverging from Upstream; b) Go with Upstream in naming the binary "unclutter", and make the "unclutter-xfixes" package Break/Replace "unclutter", with the downside of not being able to install both at the same time; or c) Something else ...? I'm thinking a) is the best option because it avoids stomping on the existing unclutter namespace, but just wanted a second opinion. Does Debian have a policy of not accepting rasterised icons? ftpmasters have a policy of requiring the preferred form for modification be available and that it be possible to build results from it on Debian (not necessarily that they be built at build time). They may or may not notice this issue though. http://www.debian.org/social_contract#guidelines http://ftp-master.debian.org/REJECT-FAQ.html I'll see what upstream have, but I suspect that if the SVG was available, it would be in the tree or on the website. No, it doesn't look safe to me either (though I hadn't noticed previously). See patch 6. That is a quite ugly fix that may or may not actually fix the issue. I would suggest that command be an array constructed in the usual way for ruby and passed to popen, instead of just constructing a string and then splitting it based on a regex. You're right. I leant away from a proper patch initially due to not wanting to make invasive changes. See the latest patch though - now constructing the array of arguments properly. There is no changelog included upstream. Perhaps they would be willing to include a ChangeLog generated from the git log or a NEWS file. I'll file another upstream bug about this. On 21/08/13 05:15, Vincent Bernat wrote: Hi Scott! Hi Vincent, thanks for reviewing my package! The package seems fine for me. I just noticed those minor details: - debian/changelog: the Imported Upstream version line is useless, please remove it. Fixed. - debian/control: do not start the short description with a capital. Fixed. - debian/rules: debhelper 9 is doing hardening by default now, so you don't need to depend on hardening-wrapper and set the option in debian/rules. Maybe you did try and this doesn't work? I'm not sure if debhelper was doing hardening by default when I originally packaged compton - hence the wrapper dependency. Removing the dependency didn't work initially due to the Makefile ignoring CPPFLAGS. I've patched the issue, and hardening is now working without the wrapper dependency. Thanks for introducing me to this tool! The package descriptions are almost duplicates of each other. Is this an issue? I modelled the descriptions on other packages which have both a command-line and graphical interface, such as vim/vim-gtk. The SVG source for rubyripper.png is missing from the package. This is not included upstream either. Does Debian have a policy of not accepting rasterised icons? The upstream README contains install and MacOS information, please ask upstream to split that out into separate files since it isn't useful for Debian users. No, the the verbose build warnings on the initial invocation of dh_auto_clean do not cause the target to fail. My use of pdebuild rather than debuild hid the problem with overriding dh_auto_clean. This also caused the build warnings in the first place, regarding missing libraries in the initial, empty, fakeroot environment. Later in the build process, when build-deps have been installed and the package is actually built, no warnings are emitted and the package builds successfully. Therefore I have removed the override and re-uploaded the package. -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 On 25/02/13 01:17, Anton Gladky wrote: Hi Scott, thanks for adopting the package. There are a couple of notes/questions: Hi Anton, thanks for the review. As you can see, I'm quite new at this! 1. Why do you use compat level 8, not 9? 2. The current Standards-Version is now 3.9.4. I used compat level 8 and Standards-Version 3.9.3 because these are the versions which dh_make automatically inserts when debianising an application. Thanks for the heads-up regarding the new versions - I've fixed the packaging. For future reference, where/when do these new versions get announced and/or become official? 3. Why VCS-field is commented out? It is better to use VCS for packaging. Yes, you are right. I have pushed the packaging to github and updated the VCS fields. 4. Why libsdl1.2debian is injected to Depends manually? Is it linked against spout? No. This was a mistake due to my misunderstanding of the misc:shlibs variable. The manual depends has been removed. 5. I would suggest to target the upload into experimental branch instead of unstable due to a freeze-period. Thanks for the tip, I've changed the upload to target experimental. 6. It seems, desktop-file is not installing. You are right, and it also had some other issues which I've now fixed to lintian's satisfaction. Thanks again for the thorough review! Watch file warning from mentors website
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I've got an issue with watch file usage in some software I'm trying to package ( https://mentors.debian.net/package/compton ). Upstream does not release tarballs, instead preferring packagers to build straight from git. I've followed the advice of the lintian report for debian-watch-file-is-missing, and created a watch file with a few comments explaining the situation. It looks like this: #version=3 #http://githubredir.debian.net/github/chjj/compton (.*).tar.gz # Upstream currently does not release tarballs or even tag releases, instead # preferring packagers to work straight from git. # When this situation improves, the watch lines above should work and this # comment block can be removed. See https://github.com/chjj/compton/issues/71 This passes lintian fine locally, but when uploaded the mentors website complains that A watch file is present but doesn't work (see the link to my package above). Is there something I can fix in the watch file, or is the mentors website complaining unnecessarily? It seems strange that the website would complain while lintian does not. Thanks for any advice. - -- Regards, Scott Leggett. -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.12 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQIcBAEBAgAGBQJRLF+NAAoJEHlzKPr+55fVQ7wP/3ITPLZkqFqIYAqem8Zn4RNp 7e7NKc2dK88BOhT0Nc0wPO/BfRzGvJD8hgOY1LfgpO7APHLKps5Wj/vhZgAAYCC8 TMeOt7zLVpcMh5/R3Q2JNP3RPbis16qJ+5bdQqySzb5e7AaZI+w38RO3YwM4n3TA 26cWCHG9mb2cyWhCNjgapqRFtZqi/ihYykrDCl0fVFT3xGtvGHJ1rzIIXmqQpAOs /QlX89awXQfgwAq14AgoONKKeeoSskxrvNpDYg3xLpuV+MgxypEAl/BcRXDXSglq rpBfwCm2DfxSp0imqcCCgUtX35GV0PtCVHKaxcqwYxLMF9hSViMbBmyLjH6eN/Zd 22edGbDdosfj/GQHrIHvJdR5EzoiC+bFmXsnzTj4n80iuNvkb6gXWlZOlCt4/o4k ihvHYfJrHAuhfPMntuYJ0FY4WJBBmIaoqzPTM+sx1fslD/n3EQ/Ph80rEAQuKHQY Cah60wJhS7gw+8slkkjbreGetr+9hvbaG4S3fxQRAFqOFLlhl7tKnvgBz1mcFr08 2t/rVxEnnHGBrqgPSicApiUBaw6e0wBb0GVfc1VjFg4Nldm/OVXq5HfevMrWZl/M 9TlsA2nk/11xdf9/fO1DqGQnpQ2KSjdKqUx/mBq/ZrnOVnabNtbKutUENyzk0yZV cmSSqiwDEqENgiHx38r2 =Xvnb -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-mentors-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#662955: review
On Fri, 9 Mar 2012 01:02:42 David Banks wrote: Hi, I'm not a DD so I can't sponsor your package, but I would be using this package if it was in the archive. Thanks for packaging it. Hi, wow thanks for the great detailed review! * You don't need the substvar ${shlibs:Depends} in the control file for the binary packages, since they are not compiled code. This gives a warning currently. Okay, I will remove this. * Why is the package priority extra? It should probably be optional. After re-reading the Policy Manual I see you are correct. * Consider switching off DH_VERBOSE in debian/rules before release, or at least remove the comment above it. Yes, I missed that. * The translations seem to be being compiled twice, once during dh_auto_build and once during dh_auto_install. This is probably unnecessary. Hmm, I hadn't really noticed that but you're correct. I'll have to patch the configure script to remove the 'all' prerequisite from the makefile's 'install' target. It seems to be there because upstream's installation instructions don't require a separate 'make' and 'make install'. * You may want to Recommend or Suggest the 'vorbisgain' and 'mp3gain' package, if rubyripper can use them. The same goes for 'normalize' but this may require a patch, since Debian uses the name 'normalize-audio' for this command. These were mentioned by the configure script. * Grepping the source it seems that rubyripper can also use 'cdrdao' and 'sox' for certain things -- consider the same for them. Yes, I will Suggest these packages. Strange that the last two aren't mentioned in any documentation that I've read (they're in the changelog though). I'll file a bug report with upstream about it. * Consider changing your DEP-5 format URL now that this has become official. http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/copyright-format/1.0/ Yep, I need to run lintian with -pedantic. * Do you need to patch the prefix '/usr' into the configure script? It seems you already specify the /usr prefix by an override in debian/rules anyway, so that seems redundant. This was left-over from my attempts to fix a build issue. I'll remove it. * You might consider splitting your patch into multiple patches, which would allow you to give a more detailed rationale for each change. For instance, your patch removes some code from the configure script probably to solve some build issue, but the patch header doesn't explain this. There were actually multiple build issues, which I didn't fully understand until I had patched them.. so yes, I will split these patches out properly. * Since you use the same man page for both rrip_cli and rrip_gui, you may want to remove (command-line interface) from the NAME section of the manual page. Totally missed that, thanks! Minor bugs that should probably be fixed by upstream: * Consider fixing the example copyright headers on the .po files, they have pasted in boilerplate. I haven't filed a bug report with upstream over this, but it's on my TODO. * I get this message when running configure: 'gettext/utils.rb' is deprecated. Use gettext/tools.rb. Yep, that can be patched. * Many translations are generating warnings like: - Obsolete msgid exists - Fuzzy message was ignored This is another issue I have to raise with upstream. I did notice this, but translations seemed to work fine anyway. Do you know what these warnings actually mean? 'info gettext' doesn't provide any documentation for warnings. Thanks for your work! I will certainly be using this when it is uploaded. Cheers, David No problem, thanks for taking the time to review the package! I should be able to upload another version with the changes sometime this weekend.. -- Regards, Scott. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-mentors-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
