 Yes. It's a little frustrating.

Frustrating is indeed the right word.

I see some weaknesses in the way that Debian is currently structured and
I think that I will write a longer e-mail about that (things that are
easily changed). Let's hope that I have the energy for that.

Code review is well-known to significantly improve quality. People who
need sponsored uploads get code review by the sponsor, so those packages
end up being of higher quality. Full Debian developers aren't required to
seek code review, so on average the packages are of lower quality.

Code review takes a lot of time, so requiring it for every package in
Debian probably isn't feasible. But it's the code review of the
sponsoring process that results in most of the quality improvements.
Team-based packaging also gets at least some code review, particularly if
committed patches are sent to the team mailing list.

Ooops. Fixed. The updated sources are again at the same address.

Uploaded. Thank you!

Did something change about the magicfilter package in this new release
that fixes these two bugs? If not, they don't belong in debian/changelog.

I get your point here (and I fixed them in the package and already
closed them in the BTS and I agree with the rationale behind them).

I have one off-topic comment: I've seen some well known maintainers do
some things without the rigor that mentors apply to prospective
maintainers.

Wouldn't it be the case to require said maintainers to shape up their
skills so that their packages improve and, as a side effect, the quality
of the overall distribution increases?

Anyway, back to my package in question, the sources are again fixed at
mentors.d.n, which can be found at:

It would be nice (modulo disagreements within the project about best

present.

RFS: magicfilter (updated package)

2009-08-02 Thread Rogério Brito
Dear mentors,

I have adopted the magicfilter package some time ago and I am now fixing
some quite long-standing bugs (you can see for yourself in the list
below). I am, therefore, looking for a sponsor for the new version
1.2-62 of my package magicfilter.

Please, keep in mind that, as this package will soon be upgraded to a
new upstream version, I have left the build system that the original
maintainer created.

The new versions of the package will use a brand new build system based
on debhelper.

Well, these are the contents of the .changes file:

The package appears to be mostly lintian clean (with the latest lintian
from unstable).

The upload would fix these bugs: 33666, 101010, 250715, 294485, 295293
(as seen above).

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/m/magicfilter
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main
contrib non-free
- dget
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/m/magicfilter/magicfilter_1.2-62.dsc

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

Kind regards, Rogério Brito.

debian/changelog is for documenting *changes* to the package. It is not a
general bug-closing service. Bugs that you're closing without changes to
the package should instead be closed by mailing nnn-d...@bugs.debian.org.
