Small correction: volatile was lenny. It's -updates now.

Once your hardware is working, there is no need to periodically update
the database. On the contrary, this introduces the risk, that a update
might actually have a regression and it stops working.

That said, mobile-broadband-provider-info sounds like a good candidate
for volatile.

Cool. I don't know the process for getting a package qualified to be
considered under the squeeze-updates policy, but that sounds like what
you (and/or the DD who sponsors your uploads of this package) want to
look into, at least down the road.

Well, I'm not involved in packaging for Debian at all, just standing
on the sidelines, so I could be All Wrong about the following. But...

I have the impression that the watch files being talked about
elsewhere in this discussion _typically_ refer to a distinct file or
files of some sort, which can be obtained via anonymous ftp / http /
etc, and which have a distinct version of some sort, be it something
embedded in the file name, or a file time stamp, or whatever. And,
watching that file, changes to its file name, changes to its time
stamp, etc is what's used to determine if a Debian package is
"up-to-date" in terms of its version with respect to the version of
the original source the Debian package is derived from.

If what you are packaging here does not have a distinct file of some
sort that can be used to determine the version of the original source,
but a worthwhile version of some sort can be derived from the source
version's Git handle, and if that Git handle can be used by the Debian
watch file mechanisms to automatically determine when the Debian
package's version is out of date with respect to the original source
file, then it seems to me that this is what should be done. Now, _if_
one can do this, and if how _how_ one does this, I do not know. But,
that seems to be the question that needs to be answered.

Thanks for your time. Hope this is of some use, interest.

Joseph

Yes the package does have a git handle:

[Kerrect speeling note: Instead of "updation of", I probably would

Wouldn't this combination of factoids [(1) that the package has
regular commits upstream of important data contained within the
package, (2) that the package therefore needs to be frequently updated
to get the new data from upstream incorporated into the package, and

+1 Didier

Let's not forget, packages like this need to work when you are offline,
and your only connectivity is 3G. They need to be usable from an install
from a stack of Debian DVDs.

I respectfully disagree.

If we take that path, then we might as well allow usb-modeswitch to download
its latest "modeswitching" strategies for the 3G dongles that need one. Oh
and usb-modeswitch could then also update its binary too as "anyone wants
the latest" anyway.

Having that type of data packaged and uploaded to our archive puts trust on
its contents. You don't get any close to that level of trust with programs
that download random stuff from the Internet for their uptodatedness;
especially when the "random stuff" is critical for the Internet access (as
mobile-broadband-provider-info can be).

In fact, I would be suprised if our Stable Release Managers were to refuse
updates of such data packages.

Cheers,

This is why I think packaging it at all is possibly a bad idea since

Hi,

Taken a note of the same. and I have uploaded the new package here

The respective dsc file can be found at:
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/m/mobile-broadband-provider-info/mobile-broadband-provider-info_2013-1.dsc

Regarding watch file I'm a bit skeptical as its a package which has
regular commits upstream and requires frequent updation of the package
in the archives I think personally and using the ftp site for the
tarball location in watch file could lead to confusions with the
versions in the archive. And if the watch file is removed lintian
throws up error. So Antii (marked in CC) can pitch in I guess.

It probably needs some rewording to not mention lintian (amongst other
things), but it is very much appropriate to mention the upstream
tarball situation in debian/watch. I personally would use something
that looks at this location:

http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/sources/mobile-broadband-provider-info/

Really though, I'm not sure the packaging system is the correct way to
distribute this data anyway, since you usually always want the latest
version. We are stuck with it until upstream changes that though.
Perhaps we need some update-usbids/update-pciids style mechanism in
the meantime though.

Howdy, folks,

I've noticed (I've not dug in to find out if it's a function of my
machine, but this seems to not be present on other packages I have, or
have reviewed) that all the files are marked +x.

You should consider wrapping the Uploaders field.

You should also consider removing the watch file - it's an Info tag
when it's missing, not a warning or error. Uscan exits with a nonzero
return value when you run it, which I don't think is right. A DD might
be able to jump in here.

That is not the appropriate way to close bugs in debian/changelog,
please read the recommendations in devref:

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/best-pkging-practices.html#bpp-debian-changelog

Once this is fixed I will upload the package.

Some other things you should note:

When you mail a bug to notify that it has been fixed upstream, please
add the fixed-upstream tag:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=640946#10
http://www.debian.org/Bugs/server-control#tag

When you intend to contact bug submitters, please CC them or CC
-submit...@bugs.debian.org since by default submitters are not
subscribed to Debian bugs. You might want to bounce/resend this
message to the submitter:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=611475#10

You might want to take a look at the debtags for this package and
audit them for correctness and completeness:

Fair enough Richard from the point of view of the information being
heavily updated in which case I am better off targeting it to
experimental.

Isn't this basically the same as saying, "We don't introduce bugs in our

wouldn't that break your mobile broadband connection just as if there
was a kernel bug for your USB 3G modem?

Hello Jonathan

This is my sincere effort to include support for updated networks for
upcoming release and m sorry for being a bit late but as the README
says its safe to update the package at any stage. So I ve targeted it
to unstable or else I ll be happy to target it to experimental for the

(future unblock) RFS: mobile-broadband-provider-info (updated package)

2011-01-03 Thread Bhavani Shankar R
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for the new version 20110103-1
of my package "mobile-broadband-provider-info".

It builds these binary packages:
mobile-broadband-provider-info - database of mobile broadband service providers

The package appears to be lintian clean.

Rationale for freeze exception:

(In view of previous unblocks I m quoting the relevant parts from my
previous mails):
I uploaded a new version because it supports new networks fixing
bug(s) back in ubuntu and here is the upstream changes
log

http://git.gnome.org/browse/mobile-broadband-provider-info/log/

also from the README file

" The Package contains only informational files so it's
safe for distributions to grab updates even during feature freeze and
maintenance stages."

henceforth I am attaching the debdiff from the present version in
sid/squeeze for your kind review

[/unquote]

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:

(future unblock) RFS: mobile-broadband-provider-info (updated package)

2010-11-06 Thread Bhavani Shankar R
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for the new version 20101106-1
of my package "mobile-broadband-provider-info".

- URL:
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/m/mobile-broadband-provider-info
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable
main contrib non-free
- dget
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/m/mobile-broadband-provider-info/mobile-broadband-provider-info_20101106-1.dsc

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

Kind regards

Please fix the following issues and I will upload it:

Please close the relevant Launchpad bugs in the changelog using (LP:
#1234) so that once Ubuntu syncs the package, the relevant bugs will
be automatically closed. You can find the relevant Launchpad bugs in
the upstream git log.

You also added a love poem in 'debian/new file', I would suggest that
is not useful in a source package and should be removed, cute though
it is :)

The following issues are not blockers for this upload:

Since upstream uses autotools, you can use 'make distcheck' to create
the tarball in debian/rules get-orig-source. Then let upstream know if
that fails or produces a different tarball than what you need for
Debian. The default upstream tarball format seems to be .tar.bz2 so
you will need to add a bunzip2 > ...tar.bz2 | gzip -9 > ...tar.gz to
the process at least until post-squeeze when you could switch to
dpkg-source v3 (IIRC the release team prefers not to unblock
dpkg-source format version changes).

I just noticed that the version number is incorrect since upstream
hasn't bumped the version in configure.ac, please talk to upstream
about that. Probably the version number needs to be autogenerated
based on the date of the latest git commit when the tarball is
generated with "make distcheck".

The upstream source still contains references to SVN, but it is now
maintained in git, you might want to poke them about that.

Upstream might want to look at CC0, which is a more internationalised
version of CC-PD.

Thanks kartik for the explanation :)

Here is the main motivation for the updated package:

I uploaded a new version because it supports new networks fixing bugs
back in ubuntu here is the upstream changes log

http://git.gnome.org/browse/mobile-broadband-provider-info/log/

and as you can see most of them are LP bug fixes :)

also from my previous mail quote

from the README file:

" The Package contains only informational files so it's
safe for distributions to grab updates even during feature freeze and
maintenance stages."

So its safe I guess to update the package :)

henceforth I am attaching the diff from the present version in
sid/squeeze for your kind review

with warm regards,

Hi,

Freeze exception was granted for that version only. You should not
upload new version (unless it fix bugs >= important severity) /new
package when freeze is in on going.

(Paul is subscribed, so dropped CC to him).

RFS: mobile-broadband-provider-info (updated package)

2010-08-24 Thread Bhavani Shankar R
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for the new version 20100824-1
of my package "mobile-broadband-provider-info".

It builds these binary packages:
mobile-broadband-provider-info - database of mobile broadband service providers

The package appears to be lintian clean.

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL:
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/m/mobile-broadband-provider-info
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable
main contrib non-free
- dget
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/m/mobile-broadband-provider-info/mobile-broadband-provider-info_20100824-1.dsc

(ps: I m CC'ing my previous version sponsor as freeze exception was
granted the previous version)

My apologies for not getting to it before freeze.

Looking at the changes, I would guess that they probably qualify for a
freeze exception since, like tzdata, it is best if this stuff is

Subject: RFS: mobile-broadband-provider-info (updated package)

2010-08-04 Thread Bhavani Shankar R
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for the new version 20100804-1
of my package "mobile-broadband-provider-info".

It builds these binary packages:
mobile-broadband-provider-info - database of mobile broadband service providers

The package appears to be lintian clean.

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL:
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/m/mobile-broadband-provider-info
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable
main contrib non-free
- dget
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/m/mobile-broadband-provider-info/mobile-broadband-provider-info_20100804-1.dsc

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

Kind regards

You should not close bugs using the changelog mechanism unless the bug
was fixed in the version being uploaded. That goes for launchpad too.
I've removed that line and uploaded your package. Please close the
launchpad bug by logging in and changing the status to "fix released"
and noting the version it was fixed in.

All of my previous comments still apply to this version of the package:

Uploaded. Please mail this list for future uploads.

Some things you might want to look at (some mentioned previously):

Since upstream uses autotools, you can use 'make distcheck' to create
the tarball in debian/rules get-orig-source. Then let upstream know if
that fails or produces a different tarball than what you need for
Debian.

The 39 Ubuntu bugs, see if they apply to Debian/upstream and send
patches as appropriate. At least two of those bugs contains a patch so
it would be great if you could do this. At least one of them is fixed
upstream and probably fixed in Debian already, you could close that
one in launchpad. BTW, for future reference, if you put (LP: #1234) in
debian/changelog then the appropriate launchpad bug will be closed
when the package is autosynced to Ubuntu.

The upstream source still contains references to SVN, but it is now
maintained in git, you might want to poke them about that.

Upstream might want to look at CC0, which is a more internationalised
version of CC-PD.

I was curious to see if I could find any issues since Kartik had no
comment on the upload at all.

Here is what I found (mostly minor stuff):

There is a typo in the package description: s/thier/their/

The package description has rather awkward grammar, please ask for
help to improve it on debian-l10n-english.

The upstream target in debian/rules should be named get-orig-source:

http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-source.html#s-debianrules

The upstream source still contains references to SVN, but it is now
maintained in git, you might want to poke them about that.

Upstream might want to look at CC0, which is a more internationalised
version of CC-PD.

The package is yet to be debtagged:

http://debtags.alioth.debian.org/edit.html?pkg=mobile-broadband-provider-info

There are a ton of bugs filed on this package in Ubuntu and a couple
in Fedora. Presumably these are also present in the Debian package so
you may want to triage them, forward upstream, etc:

Add dummy debian/watch file explaining this.

Interesting link at upstream homepage:
"Information on this page is deprecated. Please, provide future
updates through NetworkManager Bugzilla.
http://blogs.gnome.org/dcbw/2009/06/22/mobile-broadband-assistant-makes-it-easy/

Isn't this merged with NetworkManager already? Please check with
NetworkManager package maintainer(s).

Isn't the watch file also useful for keeping track of the packages
using the Debian External Health System - http://qa.debian.org/ ?
I personally find it very, very useful for the packages I maintain -
keeping my developer QA page always open in a browser tab and taking
a look at the "Watch" column every day or so helps a lot.
