RFS: windowlab (updated package)

2010-06-03 Thread Mats Erik Andersson
Pinging, interval one month, due to lack of response after
   rebuilding the submitted packaging.

Dear mentors,

This packaging of windowlab_1.40-1 has a revised formulation
of the copyright file, compared to the previous suggestion.
In debian/copyright a clarification has been inserted, stating
that the external code that the upstream author include in
release 1.40 in fact originates with libglut, and thus conforms
to the corresponding statement made on that library's author.
Thus the present windowlab_1.40 is DFSG conformant.

It builds these binary packages:
windowlab - small and simple Amiga-like window manager

The package appears to be lintian clean and builds well using pbuilder.

The upload would fix the bug 575793.
The upstream author has resolved an otherwise blocking call in X.org.

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/w/windowlab
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main
contrib non-free

Hi, I'm quickly reviewing this.

I haven't read the previous discussions about the copyright file in
windowlab (can you link me to them if they're relevant?)

It looks like the license of the code from Blender does not explicitly
grant a right to modification, which would make it non-DFSG-free. Can
you tell me whether this code is actually under Blender's license
(i.e. GPL-2+), in which case that should be noted as such in
windowlab's debian/copyright?

This code is now incorporated by the upstream author of Windowlab,
Nick Gravgaard, nothing is my insertion any more.

Gravgaard stated in a response to the Ubuntu bug report that he
altered Kilgard's code. I searched through the new licensing and
file heads, but no mention of this new origin. The only pointer is
at the end of 'events.c'.

My impression this time, was that since Gravgaard accepts this
altered code, of expressed origin with Kilgard, he judges it to be
acceptable and compatible with the AEWM clauses.

The blocking bug that this code is intended to remedy is a common
trait of all unpatched descendants of Aewm, ever since glibc-2.7
or a recent X.org, of some reason unknown to me, began stumbling
on signals.

If you take these words of mine into regard, and your greater
experience with licenses, do you concede a suitable comment in
'debian/copyright' to cover the back for Debian GNU/Linux?
Clearly Gravgaard is not so concerned as we are.

In an almost palpable sense, I judge the publication of the bug
resolution to be a matter of some urgency, taking priority over
finalizing the exact phrasing of licenses, just to provide the
few users that do exist, a fully functional package. (I wonder if
I will have to pay hard time for this loophole phrasing?)

The Ubuntu team is presently triaging windowlab-1.39 and
windowlab-1.38 for this bug, and for Debian I would like
to use a further update to the next packaging 1.40-2, to
conscientiously think our copyright notice through again.
The upstream author seems to have lost his hesitance, so
this is now a matter for Debian to resolve on its own.

Yes. Performing that wildcard replacement for all targets, would
erase my efforts to set a priority for the window manager ranking,
thus setting it to an improperly low value instead of the chosen 40.

On the other hand, I am still reluctant to implement a debhelper
override for the install target, since that would mean using a
version of debhelper so recent that backporting to, or building
inside Lenny would be a mess.

A fairly new version of debhelper is available from backports.org, so I've

Hi,

I get the impression that S. Engelsman took the function

Blender, and then Engelsman wrote the replacing call instead of
  XNextEvent().

So this patch is part of Debian's blender package?

might be, but as upstream code, not as a Debian-specific patch. FWIW
and AFAICT, Blender code is usually just GPL'd and copyright gets
assigned to the Blender Foundation (see copyright notices, with
contributors listed thereafter).

Do you see a chance to get these authors to agree on a better
license? Maybe something along the lines of expat, MIT or BSD? In
total I guess it's some interesting point anyway for such a small
piece of code (not that I could judge about whether it's trivial).

If you say so, I will annihilate the package windowlab_1.39-2 from
mentors.debian.net. Then within shortly make an upload only containing
the format migration while I try to constuct a patch of my own.

If you think that the format change is an change important enough
to warrant an upload and you don't see the possibility to have that
resolved soon that would be an option, yes.

 Mats,

OK. I'm normally not a huge stickler for lintian Informational warnings but
 the
first three of these are pretty easy to fix. (Well all of them are easy to fix
but..). Could you please fix at least the first three and re-upload?

 Hello Barry,

yes I am aware of the fact that Windowlab has been first orphaned,
and later removed from unstable. It is my hope to reintroduce the
package again. My original ITA was logically changed to an ITP

RFS: windowlab (updated package)

2009-11-18 Thread Mats Erik Andersson
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for the new version 1.38-1
of my package windowlab.

It builds these binary packages:
windowlab - Small and simple Amiga-like window manager

The package appears to be lintian clean.
It also builds well using pbuilder.

The upload would fix these bugs: 545798

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/w/windowlab
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main
contrib non-free
- dget
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/w/windowlab/windowlab_1.38-1.dsc

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

Kind regards

 Mats Erik Andersson

Re: RFS: windowlab (updated package)

2009-09-12 Thread George Danchev
 Dear mentors,

Hi,

I am looking for a sponsor for the new version 1.34-2 of my new package
of windowlab. It builds this binary package:

windowlab - Small and simple Amiga-like window manager

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:

 - URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/w/windowlab

 - Source repository:
 deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main contrib non-free

 - dget

http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/w/windowlab/windowlab_1.34-2.dsc

It would please me if someone could scrutinize and possibly upload this
package, after any corrections deemed necessary. I have enhanced the
old package to register x-window-manager, and I believe to have fixed
a problem when closing windowlab down, when there still are active clients.
I have observed this tendency of malfunction for two years now.

Taking care of existing bugs is very welcomed indeed, however you should send
a patch with the differences between the current package and the NMU you have
prepared to the BTS, then you should give some time (usually some days) to the
maintainer to react.

http://www.debian.org/doc/developers-reference/pkgs.html#nmu

Please, do add me to your CC line when responding.

Done.
