What are the advantages of kt-update over cron-apt and unattended-upgrades?

kt-update allows (me) to remotely manage the various configuration our
machines :
* simple http file servers provide different sources.list which contains
some extra directives (seen as comment for apt-get or aptitude)
* one of this extra directives allow kt-update to replace and improve
tasksel : when installing or purging packages with kt-update, kt-update
checks it won't uninstall mandatory packages.
* kt-update checknfix is also use to be run at startup to auto-repair
broken distribution (eg: power off during upgrade)
* kt-update is also used by people who are not familiar with Linux. They
need to switch configuration depending on what they have to test, debug or
develop (like "stable-withPackagesABandC", "testing-withMetaPackageP" or
"experimental-..." )

Thanks for the links, so I am now reading man reportbug.

You need to provide the source package, not the binary package. The binary
package is effectively useless to a potential sponsor.

  * 3.7.2.2 as standards version is over precise, should be only 3.7.2.

  * debian/copyright should have a reference to the full license text in

Oh yeah. Sorry about that.

I can email the binary to anyone who asks. It looks like

I see that you have repackaged the upstream tarball. Why was this
necessary? You should detail in README.Debian what has been removed
and why.

Please read section 6.7.8.2 in the developer's reference and check if
your package meets the shoulds and musts in there.

Though I can not sponsor your uploads (at least not yet), I might still
be able to give you a few hints which could help you. However, it seems
that there already is someone who maintains RSBAC-stuff for Debian. If
the packages he maintains don't cover everything you would like to see
in Debian, perhaps he can help you getting the rest into Debian.

The packages currently in Debian are:
rsbac-admin - Rule Set Based Access Control administrative utility
rsbac-dev - RSBAC development library
rsbac-doc - RSBAC documentation
rsbac-klogd - RSBAC messages logger
All maintained by Javier Fernandez-Sanguino Peña <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

> Of course we can and will then name a single maintainer for Debian if
> and when necessary. (Which might just be me ;)

The maintainer doesn't need to be a single person. In fact, given the
size of RSBAC, giving a mailinglist as the maintainer might be better
(listing all those who actually might upload the package to Debian in
the "Uploaders:" control field of the package).

Some comments after looking at your package:

- You should always check your packages with linda and lintian programs.
That's what prospective sponsors usually checks first, and you've got
  plenty of warnings/errors there.
- manual page should have the same name as binary
- you don't close any ITP in changelog entry, and I can't find any in WNPP
  database

Enough for first time. Please fix these errors and ask for sponsor once
again. Also don't forget we've got more than 15k packages which can be used
as examples.

Well the problem is that dh_make had wrong template few weeks ago.
I filled bugreport about it and it has been fixed, so I thought that new
packages will have proper copyright files.

Unfortunatelly wrong copyright files are still created.
Maybe linda/lintian warnings could decrease their numbers, so thanks for
doing it ;)

Let me make sure that others also understand correctly. The dh_make
./debian/copyright template (for "single binary" packages) looks like:

This package was debianized by ...
It was downloaded from ...
Copyright:
Upstream Author(s): ...
License:

You should make the line that says "Copyright:" look like:

"Copyright Justin Pryzby"

or maybe

"Copyright (C) 2004 by Justin Pryzby"

which seems to be used elsewhere. I thought lintian enforced this,
but I can't seem to find it in the code. I'm opening a couple bugs
now we speak.

Ok I took a look at your package. Few glitches I found:

- If upstream uses configure stuff, then why are you patching Makefile.in
and similar files? Can't you just use --prefix=/usr ?
- Your copyright file still doesn't look as it should.
Take a look at such files in other packages. Name of author should be
mentioned also under "Copyright" header. Then follows license.
You can use package "potrace" as an example.
- You should close your bugreport (ITP) in changelog entry.

Otherwise package looks good for me.

Good luck with finding sponsor. I can't upload it cause I'm not DD yet.

These two packages have very similar functionality. I dont know konwert
very well so I cannot tell much about differences between these two
packages. I thing that whether user would use polcnv or konwert is the
question of personal preference. (that's why I think it should be in
Debian).

Hi Maciek.

How does your package differ from konwert?

Has it got some advantages?

This is Polish translation of the GPL licence file. It was included in the
upsource.

I have corrected the glitches you have mentioned. Would you be so kind to

First of all, sorry if went a bit off-topic previously.

My only intention was to show, that it isn't that strange to find funny,
strange or curious, the use of a propietary mailer for asking for a sponsor.

I didn't wanted to convince anyone that he is right or wrong, just to explain
reasons that shouldn't be that strange in this context.

That's all I have to add to this thread. ;-)

Some people have multiple machines, and not all machines may
run the OS that one wants. Ranting about peoples choice of mailer to
use, rather than actions, sounds like unwarranted prejudice.

Not your problem, is it? And with active patching, and being
careful about ones own actions, lots and lots of people manage to
 avoid getting infected.

At this point, I have not seen the OP do anything that they
ought not to have done, and I have no idea what circumstances they
were dealing with -- they may not have a choice about the OS/MUA at
this point. We should be inviting to people who are trying to help

You must admit that is not very common to create Debian packages outside of
Debian, isn't it? At least, if you are supposed to test a package, you should
use a clean environment, and winbugs is not the cleanest environment I can

I don't know much about it, but I see a fundamental problem with file
overwriting in Windows. You can't do that if the file is opened. This is
a big problem for dpkg and post-install scripts since all binaries are
linked with cygwin1.dll. If we find a way to workaround this, everything
else should be only a matter of effort.

Who cares? Probably that works for him.

Have you read http://people.debian.org/~mpalmer/debian-mentors_FAQ.html

First of all, you should create a package, post an URL here and wait for
comments.

Really, I don't want to flame but I cannot resist to point out that a
"want-to-be" Debian Maintainer uses such a mailer...

Really fun :)

Anyway, good luck for your sponsor search, that's not that easy to find
one.

flexbackup :
- no debconf use for configuration (really not userfriendly for
  Debian to me)
- moreover the conffile is huge and not that easy to understand

afbackup :
- a selfmade client / server implementation which requires
knowledge and which is less easy than using ftp or ssh
  accounts.

backup2l :
- no debconf use for configuration
- conffile a little bit long

Well, to conclude, I really think taht even if backup-manager is not as
powerful as others, it is definetly the most easy to use one.

. The first point is the 100% debconf use for configuration.

. Second point is that backup-manager uses existing architectures for
transfert : ftp or ssh.

. Third point is that backup-manager provide simple actions and then is
really simple to use.

This is the feedback I had from users.
I think that backup-manager is designed for people who :

- want to backup a short list of directories.

- don't want a huge factory for making 3 tarballs.

- want to keep those tarballs on a list of remote hosts.

- use existing ftp or ssh accounts for transfert.

- want a cron mail only if something went wrong.

- don't want to make a new dirty bash script for that.

- want to run the stuff after answering debconf questions without
  editing any files.

I think that this is not provided by existing packages in Debian, and
that's why I sent an ITP.

Tell me if I'm wrong.

That's a userfriendly one. Just install the package, answer questions

You'll be able to make tarballs daily and upload them to remote hosts
either with ftp or scp.

Here is a user comment : http://www.g-tec.co.at/weblog/index.php?p=21

And here is short description of backup-manager :
http://www.sukria.net/index.php?p=412

Currently, some users reporting me their happyness to have a small and
easy to use backup software that doesn't need a lot of knoledge to use
it.

You also don't need to read a huge piece of doc to understand waht
happend : enter the list of directories you want to backup, a list of
remote hosts and that's it !

Simple stuff, the simple way.

I find it peculiar that your .orig.tar.gz doesn't contain anything but
the two files, but I checked upstream and they indeed only distributed

This message reminds me of a question I've been meaning to ask; I'm
sure this has come up before, so I'm asking this more from the
standpoing of "what are the reasons" rather than "someone should think
about doing this"...anyway, I thought it would be kinda neat to have
chroot versions of packages that people (...who are running servers)
could install and already have a "jailed" environment. Something like
where the current package name is "bind9", a package named
"bind9-chroot", etc.
Of course, this is something that people can do themselves (especially
with the availability of tools like the above jailkit), but it might go
a mildly significant way to bettering general Internet security if
anybody could just do it "out of the box" so to speak.
