Right now I am "developing" a hitlist to get a clear strategy. Most of
the stuff is already in Debian, but to this time I cannot give a clear
statement.

I don't think that it will set a precedent. That is like saying DDs
being employed by a company that does any Debian-related or
Linux-related work is setting a bad precedent. Most DDs work on Debian
in their spare time. It is just that for the right price they are
willing to spare *more* time. There is nothing wrong with that. If you
need something now, you should be prepared to pay for it. If not, you
sould be prepared to wait.

For the benefit of those unfamiliar with the situation, MEPIS (a Debian
deriative distribution) needed new webmin packages straight away. I
replied that being under a cash crunch, I had to look for gainful
employment so new webmin packages were a low priority. I gave them three
choices.

1. Wait till I or someone else got around to it.

2. Remove my need to go money grubbing

3. Make the packages themselves and I would upload them to the archive.

Happily they did choose 2 and I built the packages they wanted on their
schedule.

I thought it would be a good
idea to "sponsor" DDs in this way to keep up the valued work on special
things which are of interest for me.

Me too. However, we don't want to start a dangerous precedent of
maintainers holding their packages for ransom. I suggest you first follow
the normal RFP (Request For Package) procedure and only if that fails go
the payment route. (If however, you do go down that route, please note
that I am available :-)

Most things has been answered already, so I have only two questions. What
packages are we talking about? I mean what program would you like to see in
Debian?

Are they free software or do you want to see non-official packages
outside Debian cause they don't comply DFSG?

I think there really is nothing wrong with people paying money to
individuals to do work on Debian. This is in various forms already
being done, and there are certainly a number of DD's, and also other
maintainers, that are willing to accept money to spend their time on
area's in Debian that the money-provider wants. That only results in
more work getting done on Debian, after all.

Thanks for pointing this out :-)

Some folks answered me to be disturbed about my posting. Saying if
someone starts to pay for packaging some DDs will only "sponsor" for
money in the future. This was/would not be intented.

I once saw an article that a DD orphaned a package and would only be

Be aware that in Debian, 'sponsoring a package' is the wording typically
used for a Debian Developer checking, signing and uploading a package
prepared by a non-developer, and has nothing to do with money. Be aware
of this possible confusion, and otherwise, you can check
http://www.debian.org/consultants/, although that's not precisely what
you want, maybe, but it comes close.

Just asking here might in the end give you the best results, maybe
someone is willing to help you regardless of payement too.

Sponsoring of packages

2005-06-07 Thread Martin Mewes
Hi all,

maybe this is a most wanted question, but maybe someone can dump the
information to me.

I am not a developer but I have started trying to pack things for debian
but somehow it is to complex for me. So I thought about to sponsor some
packages and my question is:

If I am willing to send out some Paypal-Cash and some package-guru out
there is willing to do the job, is this the proper place to seek out
for this companion?

bis dahin/kind regards
