this is normal and a known issue (see the thread [Announce]) on this
list. We are working on this. I have not tested it, but you can copy
your OpenOffice.org1.0.0 directory to OpenOffice.org1.0.1 ...

OpenOffice.org on PowerPC [kevin.hendricks@sympatico.ca: [releases] Linux PowerPC is back working and ready to release]

2002-07-10 Thread Jan-Hendrik Palic
Hi ...

after a week of hard work, we have OpenOffice.org working on all
available Linux-PowerPC-Distributions.

So .. I hope, I get OpenOffice.org build on debian-powerpc as well.
I'm working on this.

Subject: [releases] Linux PowerPC is back working and ready to release

Hi,

After some mad scrambling the Linux PowerPC port is back and ready to
release! :-)

Please thank Jack Howarth, Jan Hendrik-Palik (Debian) for their hard work
testing and reporting bugs and providing traces, and special thanks to Dan
Burcaw of YellowDogLinux for testing and Olaf Hering for testing as well
as graciously providing a remote test machine so that I could debug the
problem!

And special thanks go to Daniel Boelzle of Sun/Hamburg and the udk project
for answering all of my questions and pointing me back at the gcc 3 bridge
code when I wandered off into thinking it was a gcc optimization problem.

I really appreciate everyone's help. I would never have found the problems
without it.

I hope to have a build for Jan to do QA with by tomorrow afternoon and
should be ready to release only a little later than everyone else.

Kevin

Update to 1.0.1

2002-07-10 Thread Arthur
Hello,

I upgraded OOo today to 1.0.1 and since my upgrade I have in my home directory
a directory OpenOffice.org1.0.1 which is not masked. So, I would like to know
if it's a bug or if it's normal. If it's isn't a bug how can I fix this problem
?

Thanks

Better: initialize with /etc/openoffice/default files, then override

Hi,

You may want to send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] hinting about issues that are
important to you. I can help to push for approval and commit them (if
approved) if I am both aware of them and that they are improtant to
Debian. I am trying to get Jan commit access to at least the ppc pieces
and more so that he can act similarly like a bridge.

Thanks!

I already submitted several patches to IssueZilla, and some were applied for
1.0.1 already. But it takes time for me to get them ready and make sure
they are suitable for inclusion. The most work went into #4172 and #4176,
and those are both stagnating in IZ with unanswered comments like 'will this
make it for 1.0.x'. I understand that there is a limit to the manpower
available, and I too only have limited time to work on OOo, so I've been
concentrating my time more on the Debian packages and waiting for the
other patches to be accepted. I had to bug Sander for weeks for one of
them.

I expect the remaining items are now too out of date to be included, so I'll
have to generate new ones sometime, along with the other patches that have
mounted up in our patch directory.

Anyway, I appreciate that you have taken the trouble to follow our mailing
list and are bridging the gap in the opposite direction, too. And thanks
for the reminder that no-one has done any patch submitting for a while :)

What about /etc/openoffice/x.y(.z)?
II would like have the setting centrialized some time in the future. If
some user want to have their own settings, they could create
~/.openoffice/x.y(.z), if thei need them.

We have then to be sure, that OpenOffice.org first look into the uses
home for its files, and if they are not there, it will work with the
files under etc ...

Any thoughts

Japanese fonts settings

2002-07-10 Thread Masatoshi Iwasaki
Hi.

I wrote how to use Japanese fonts by OOo because I found someone wanted
to know how to use Japanese from the archives of this ML. This instruction
doesn't contain how to use Japanese XIM clients though.

1. At first, you have to install Japanese TrueType fonts. Several fonts are
available
by apt. I recommend 'ttf-kochi-gothic' and 'ttf-kochi-mincho' because these
are popular in Japan as much as I know. So, type this:

  $ apt-get install ttf-kochi-gothic ttf-kochi-mincho

2. Make fonts.dir for these fonts. They will be installed at /usr/share/fonts/
truetype/kochi. You can use mkttfdir supplied by the 'fttools' package. Like
this:

  $ cd /usr/share/fonts/truetype/kochi
  $ mkttfdir .

3. Add FontPath to your XF86Config-4. Edit XF86Config-5 and add the line in
Files Section.

  FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/kochi/"

You also add this line in Modules section.

  Load "xtt"

As much as I know, we can't use freetype instead of xtt. I don't know why. If
you are
using GNOME2 and Antialiasing, you can't use Japanese fonts also. Use xtt and
turn off
  anti-aliasing.

4. Restart X.

5. After that, run xfontsel and confirm that you can see these two fonts.
Select 'kochi gothic' in 'fmly' and 'jisx0208.1983' in 'rgstry'. If it
success,
you can see Japanese fonts. Now you can use Japanese fonts on X.

6. Run OOo and open Tools -> Options -> Languages Settings -> Language.
  * Enable Asian languages support.
  * Select 'Japanese' for Default languages for documents.

7. That's all :-). You can select 'Kochi Gothic' from the font selection box in
the menu bar .

I hope this helps.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] OpenOffice.org 1.0.1rc and status update

2002-07-10 Thread Kevin B. Hendricks
Hi,

Yes the upstream is aware of this. What I tried to expalin in my last mail
was that changes in both hyphenation dictionary format and the creation of
shared dictionaries (as opposed to user specific dictionaries only)
necessitated that the user space from OOo 1.0 not be used for OOo 1.0.1

In general this will only be true for the stable series. Once the
development branch 642 becomes active again, you can expect user land
pieces to change as needed to get to the next point.

Hope this explains things.

BTW, I wuld like to see more action on the official OOo mailing lists from
distribution based developers. I see Chris and Peter and Jan actively on
these lists but still don't see some good patches (stl_gcc.h compiled with
gcc 3.1.1 for example make it to the [EMAIL PROTECTED] lists or elsewhere.

So I still am learning things from just reading your debian OOo list since
your problems are related to ours.

Hope this helps.

Upstream behaviour in this regard is of course rather broken - config files
should really be importable for minor version number changes. Of course,
that's not something the Debian packagers should be fixing, but the OOo
developers.

Do you need some more presence on the upstream mailing lists politely asking
for upgradeability? Should I file an issue about that in their issuezilla?

Well, yes but it generates unwanted mails unknown-package that people such
as Colin Watson have to read. I have been asked to request an override (bug
#151529) for this.

Maybe you could direct bugs to openoffice.org, with this [1]:

This is done by having this line in /usr/share/bug/$package/control
Submit-As: $new-package

It tells you it failed, but in fact it suceeds :)

I got this:

> Subject: subscribe openoffice.org

openoffice.org is neither a source package nor a binary package.
It may be a 'virtual package' or a mistake...

But it still worked once I confirmed the subscription

Actually we (upstreamers) were going to use the same OpenOffice.org1.0 but
since there have been changes in the format of the hyphenation
dictionaries and movements of dictioarnies to cetralized shared locations
then the old ~/OpenOffice.org1.0 user dicrectory contents conflicted with
these changes and we were forced to rename it to prevent errors.

That's my hope!

That's what upstream calls it :-/ Because we may have these directories
lying around and becoming disused, it is better for them to be visible, and
the closer we are to upstream's names, the less potential confusion we have.
1.0.1 significantly reduced the gap between our code and the .debs and IMO
that is good. I hang out on #openoffice.org and see user queries being
greeted in surprise by non-debian people when there is no ~/OpenOffice1.0
directory.

> couldn't you move
> ~/.openoffice out of the way if present and install into that

That would break downgrades to 1.0.0. The ~/.openoffice name was chosen
before we knew that upgrades would have to have a totally new directory.
Also, having a hidden directory means that users don't realise that there
may be unused OOo directories lying around in their home directories. That
is maybe acceptable for one version, but not multiple versions.

I did not implement the 'perfect' solution - just something that would work
immediately, keep user problems to a minimum, allow up- and downgrades and
be more similar to upstream's behaviour. Those were my initial priorities
and I did not want to spend a lot of time on it until I had seen discussion
about it after the official release.

Maybe we'll all end up saying 1.0.1 is perfect and we don't need to keep the
older 1.0.0 user directory lying around. I just don't know at this point -
I need to wait and see how things work out.

Can we use the BTS for them, too? How to set up?

Rene

P.S.:

I tried a subscribe to the PTS of openoffice.org to get all the BTS
mails and failed. It was said to me that tehers is no binary or source
package openoffice.org which is true :)

But I subscribed recently to the PTS of away which is going to be
upoload today or tomorrow and therefore not in the archive yet and
that works...

Maybe the pts has some problem with the dot ion the name?

Hmmm. Just now, there is no openoffice.org-bin for 1.0.1rc2 on

why does it have to be such a clunky name? couldn't you move

[ANNOUNCE] OpenOffice.org 1.0.1rc and status update

2002-07-10 Thread Chris Halls
OpenOffice.org 1.0.1rc2
===
I've finally got a build of 1.0.1 that seems to work well, and 1.0.1rc2
should be available from the mirrors [1] by the time you read this. If you
wish to stay with 1.0.0-6 while possible bugs are shaken out, please see the
section about the new 'testing' apt source below. The official 1.0.1
tarball is likely to be released this week; the remaining issues are with
non-Linux builds.

There is a detailed changelog for 1.0.0->1.0.1 here:
  http://tools.openoffice.org/releases/changelog.html

Unfortunately, upstream have not provided a good upgrade solution for user
settings from 1.0.0 to 1.0.1. Having seen corruption of settings in the
user directory by 1.0.0 on several occasions, I am not prepared to provide a
simplistic upgrade script that simply copies settings over from the 1.0.0,
because any corruption will be carried forward and produce unexpected
additional problems. My guess is that once 1.0.1 is out and users start
discussing/complaining on the upstream lists, there will be discussion about
how settings can be presevered and possibly a better solution can be found.
For now I have modified our package to do the following:

 - Place the user install in ~/OpenOffice.org1.0.1
(this is the default for installs from the .tar.gz, too)
 - If the wrapper sees an old settings directory in ~/.openoffice,
print a warning that this directory is no longer used so the user can
delete it when they are sure that the upgrade to 1.0.1 was sucessful.

This way, it is possible to leave the settings from 1.0.0 around so that
downgrades are possible should 1.0.1 turn out to be problematic.

New 'testing' apt source

After having uploaded a broken 1.0.1rc1 and confused a couple of people
during the short period it was available, I have decided to make a new
'testing' source available in addition to the 'unstable' source:

- testing -

deb testing main contrib

 - Contains Package versions that have had a period of testing in 'unstable'
and are not known to introduce new problems.
 - When a package set has been used for few days and is known not to
introduce new bugs, it is made available in 'testing' by copying the
   Packages indexes from 'unstable'
 - Should be suitable for running in production environments.
 - Not exactly equivalent to the current testing/Woody in the Debian
archives - these packages are still compiled on sid systems, although I
try to make it easy to install on a Woody machine by mirroring the
packages from sid that are needed (currently libgcc1 and possibly
libfreetype6 in the near future). If we get round to explicitly
compiling packages on Woody systems, they will end up in a 'woody'
   aptable source.

- unstable -

deb unstable main contrib

 - This is the place where new packages versions will be made available
   first.
 - After a period of testing (the length depending on how significant the
changes were), and provided no new bugs are found, the package versions
will be made available in 'testing':

[upload] ---> unstable --[manual intervention]--> testing

OpenOffice.org for PowerPC
==
Jan has been working hard on the PowerPC port, but progress is very slow.
gcc 2.95 is no longer supported by the upstream developer for 1.0.1 (there
is only one volunteer in addition to Jan), and there are still problems with
builds of 1.0.1 with gcc3.1.1 on Debian and SuSE. Several problems have
been uncovered in the glibc ports and other libraries. It looks like an
official 1.0.1 upstream version will not be available at the same time as
the other architectures, and consequently a .deb will also take longer.
Thanks Jan for your hard work on this!

Preperations for upload to Debian main
==
These are the remaining showstoppers that I am aware of:

 - Remove non-free Java build dependency. At build time, Java is needed to
create a set of XML files which are essential for the rest of the build.
There are also Java components which are built later on and need non-free
Java JDK APIs. We are hoping to alter the bootstrap process to use a
free JDK and not build the rest. Peter is working on this.

 - Fix the remaining policy issues in the packaging. There are some files
with the wrong permissions, and the documentation is not all installed in
/usr/share/doc. We also need manpages for the openoffice and
spadmin binaries. Is there anyone willing to put a manpage together for
us? That is a contribution you can make without having to build the
   package.

 - Make .debs of libstlport4.5 that have been compiled with gcc3.0/1 and
   upload.

These are now packaging/policy-level issues so the .debs themselves should
be reasonably stable now for normal use. You may like to consider using the
new 'testing' apt source if you wish to install OOo in production
environments.

Thanks.. it works.. it was buggy savage driver.. Anyway, now i am haveing
probs with fonts but trying to solve it. Because of some stupid thing,
even when i add fonts with spadmin they wont appear in openoffice.

Did you check /usr/share/openoffice.org/doc/README.Debian?

Maybe you have an S3 graphics card, or perhaps the font troubleshooting
guide can give you some tips.

OpenOffice crashes when entering menus

2002-07-10 Thread mqe
Hi

Has anyone experienced anything like this? I have browsed through these
mailinglist and didnt find answer from there.

So, installation goes fine (but in some parts the screen doesnt seem to
update quite correctly, but works) and when i start openoffice and take
for example FILE - OPEN - and try to enter some directory, it floods my
screen full of something like lines or something. Linux gets stuck and
nothing helps except reboot.

I have no idea why is this.
