Yes, indeed, but if your time is limited and you prefer just to
document what you did, you can use the official debian wiki[1]

X config on a G3 iMac

2006-04-19 Thread Jon Linnell

Yo,
I'm trying to configure X, I'm using an iMac with the built-in
monitor. when I 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86' it asks me for the
BusID of my monitor. On another tty, I used the 'lspci' command to
find it, I converted it to decimal and used that, BUT, it won't let
me (Incorrect format or something), It only lets me use a single
digit. I've cycled through the config several times cycling through
0-9 but it still says it can't find my screen!!! Any suggestions?

[Formac Watchandgo DTV] is it supported on debian?

2006-04-19 Thread Stefano Melchior
Dear all,
I bought a Formac Watch-and-go PCMCIA card to watch digital terrestrial
tv on my own powerbook.
Since it is only for macosx and I could not find anything regarding its
support on Debian or GNU/Linux in general, I was wondering if any of you
have had some experience or know anything on its support.

Cheers

Does it work if you leave the field empty? If not, try lspci -X.

Ditto.

And Thanks to you, Matthias, too, for asking:

I had a similar problem not on Gnome (that I essentially have not
installed) but on KDE: Now, after upgrading to the latest udev/hal
packages from unstable everything seems fine again on KDE: For example
when I plug in a SCSI disk now via Firewire the disk appears as an
icon on the KDE desktop. Unmounted, as I need it, but mounting it on
KDE is nothing more than right-clicking the unmounted disk (icon) and
then choosing to mount it. Which was not possible, IIRC, before
upgrading hal/udev: no disk icons on the desktop at that time, so
without a chance to mount the device with a simple mouse click as an
underprivileged user.

[Note: I'm not sure whether it really was necessary to also upgrade
hal]

I didn't even need to upgrade my 2.6.14.1 kernel to fix this issue
... :) ... the joy of KDE? ... ;)

The new udev/hal versions:
ii udev 0.089-1

ii hal 0.5.7-1
  [ ... more hal add-ons ... ]

Thanks again to everyone contributing.
Best Regards

Re: [Formac Watchandgo DTV] is it supported on debian?

2006-04-19 Thread vinai

Stefano,

Probably a better would be "Is the card supported by the linux kernel ?"

If you boot up the system with the card in the PCMCIA slot, and run the
lspci command, you should see an entry saying what chip/hardware is in
the Formac card. And if you look through the kernel sources (and should
most likely find support in $LINUX_KERNEL_SRC_DIR/drivers/media, or a
directory with a similar name), and find support for this chip in there,
it might work. Of course, a lot of these drivers were written for x86
or x86-64 support and may need "some modifications" to work properly on
all platforms ...

cheers

unfortunately these products were designed of macosx only, so freebsd
(more or less).
I was wondering if any of you have experienced in finding driver compatibility

Problem with Acard 6280M (OldWorld Mac)

2006-04-19 Thread Michael Ladwein
I managed to install Debian 3.1r1 on /dev/hde2. At the end of the installation
process, Debian tells me it cannot install the quik bootloader. So I just
finished without quik. I set "root=/dev/hde2 devfs=mount, all rw" as kernel
parameters in BootX (/dev/ram0 works for the installer) but now it seems the
System cannot find the boot device. My guess is that the module required for
the Acard 6280M is not loaded. The installer gives the hint to use the Kernel
and the Ramdisk in /dev/hde2/boot for booting. But how?

Thanks.

You most probably also have to load the initrd image related to the
kernel.

Compiled without any sort of trouble for me with the use of the source from
deb archive. Using 2.6.17-rc2.
Modules loaded perfectly but I have not configured MOL yet, thus not tried
them. I dont know what problems Sven mentioned, but so far so good.

I updated from 2.6.16 to the new 2.6.17-rc2 today and now alsa complains
about a missing driver:

ibookg4 ~ # /etc/init.d/alsasound restart
