while we are at it, would it be possible to automagically detect 'hey it
is monitory XY attached so I am switching to the right resolution' like
osx does ?

rationale, I regularly switch between two configurations, single
laptop internal display + laptop with external display and am now getting
annoyed by always having to xrandr -s 0 / xrandr -s1 ...

As said, a year or two ago, i used grub2 to boot a dual power3 box, which is a
powerpc 64bit machine. It worked just fine, especially since the default
method for openfirmware bootloaders is to run as 32bit. I am not sure it makes
sense to run them in 64bit mode, or even if it is supposed to work. All the
documentation i have seen on this topic, even from IBM and others, show that
the bootloader should be run in 32bit mode, and the kernel is launched from
32bit, and then sets up the 64bit stuff, so there should be no major
difference with regard to grub2.

Notice that here ppc64 is confusing, you probably speak about the one-man-show
pure-64 thingy from Andreas Jochens, and not from the kernel arch ppc64.
Notice that this is not and will never be an officially supported arch by
debian, and despite me asking, Andreas Jochens has shown absolutely no
interest to cooperate with the biarch or multi-arch effort, even though this
won't happen anymore for etch anyway.

The package works for me. But I miss the power key at the top of the

Actually, there was a new patch needed for quik, thanks to Christian and Ben
for investigating and fixing this.

A kernel .deb including the fix is available at :

http://people.debian.org/~luther/linux-image-2.6.18-rc7-powerpc_2.6.17+2.6.18-rc7-0experimental.1_powerpc.deb

Please test it and provide feedback to see if it solves your issue.
(not, that this is a second version, with benh's patch, instead of the first i
uploaded yesterday with Christian's tentative patch, please make sure to test
the new one (check the changelog to be sure :).

cacao not on powerpc

2006-09-18 Thread Bernhard Reiter
Hi,
it seems that the changes towards cacao 0.96-2
broke the powerpc build. I guess the change is:
 Added --disable-disassembler to DEB_CONFIGURE_EXTRA_FLAGS.

and because of
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=375657
0.96.1 is unusable.

this one boots my beige (G3 3/98 rev b, 192RAM, ... )
straight into
sarge (ready for upgrade, i guess). i ran top and let
it idle a few
minutes and watched the buffer/cache go up. it wanted
about
40 MB to idle and 80 more for the b/c. i started
aptitude , it starts
fast and took 8MB. so as far as i could tell w/out
upgrading, it is fine.

no help for the powerbook (603ev 2/97, 80RAM) though.
hmmm.

(i used the 3400 to make the ram disk and copied it
over via applenet)

mixed on this. i actually have a task for the beige i
got last week, so
something good there. still i find typing with the
newer laptops very tough
on my hands (old keyboard = much better ergonomics for
me).

Hello,

Just wanted to inform you, not sure if this is of some interest, but i also do
propose, in informal partnership with IBM france, paying debian support on
Power hardware. This is done on a trouble ticket scheme, and will also include
a biarch/multiarch setup for debian/etch once it is released, and will found
my work on the debian/powerpc/64bit front.

So, well, i am not sure if you are interested in this, and i have some doubts
given that most people who chose debian chose it because of the good support
and because they can fix some issues themselves too, so even if you are not
interested in this, i would like to have some feedback as for the reasons of
it.

Sven Luther

Re: Re: problem boot debian on powerbook g3 (pismo/firewire)

2006-09-18 Thread brian
hello, very sorry you are having so much
trouble, glad you are persistent, hope i
have not made it any worse.

here are things i have used in past with my
pismo to reset:

a) hold down the power key for about 30 seconds
until you hear a long beep.
b) press and hold the reset button on the back
for (not sure exactly) about the same amount of time.
c) restarting the computer, push down all the keys
command-option-p-r, hold until you hear chime second
time, this is called resetting pram.
d) using a free software tool in os9 which also clears
pram, called tech tool.

although i don't recall having black screen with pismo
i have had it with some older macs and it was
the firmware settings corrupted, the other things
i used there were "apple system disk" and
"xpostfacto".
i have not tried either of these with pismo, i cannot
say if they would help or make things worse. they
do work with os9.

another thing to try is take out the battery,
disconnect ac
power and let it sit overnight (or longer). reset
the date in mac os afterwards.

you did check all those other things ? especially,
mac os does mount the cd and you can go look,
you see a folder with a mac icon on it that is
meaning the cd is bootable ? (the buttons you
see when you held down option key they are
not to be trusted as OK for the cd). you have
*some* bootable mac cd you test your cd, with it ?
(like i said you should have one before you
erase your disk...)

to check your ram there was a utility on the
mac on linux site, i am not sure it catches all
problems but it might some. i believe that not
all pc-100 ram is 100% compatible there ...

other ideas i don't know really much about:
your friend knows a lot about debian/linux, you
might be able to get a network boot from his machine.

I installed on no-vios p505 recently, and will soon do once i get the hang of
the vios thingy.

There is a copy of the yaboot.conf file in /etc, which is the one used on IBM
hardware, please check that this is indeed the case.

Also, notice that debian/sarge doesn't support this kind of hardware very
well, and it is recomended you use the etch beta or daily builds, i myself
used an etch daily build for the installation :
