Right now I have squeeze running on a PowerBook G4 Ti (500MHz, 512MB RAM) and it runs beautifully. The latest kernel fixed the suspend to ram issue and it works great. On mine XFCE wasn't too snappy, I haven't tried LXDE on this specific machine but it should fair better. However, if you are willing to invest some time in configuring this system, I suggest going with openbox. It is really lightweight and you can have system trays, etc. For the install, it should be straight forward if you want to format everything and install only Debian. I'm not sure if the GUI installer works for PowerPC but text based installer is quite simple as well. Hope this helps. If that doesn't work there are several things you can try: 1. Launch 'fdisk' and try to print out the partition table. You can also verify the partition table from within fdisk. If fdisk recognizes it then that is a good sign and it could be just that your kernel doesn't have support for it. 2. You can recreate the partion table using fdisk or gparted. I am not sure if this will format your data but if you just want to reuse the disk this maybe an option. 3. If you need to recover data from a disk, use 'photorec' it is a great app and can recover almost anything. 4. Try force mounting the disk. e.g. mount /dev/sda /mnt/disk. 5. Use 'TestDisk' http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk It's open source and from the same place that makes photorec. It can fix and recover partition tables, etc. I think you should take a look at #5 first and go from there. Hope this helps. Good luck and post back your results. I forget the exact command but I will post again when i find out. Also, try placing an electric fan near the vents so cool air will be blown in. It could also be that there is a lot of dust blocking the vents? In the meantime, try to get a minimal debian install up and running. This usually takes less than 15 minutes. Based on my experiences the freezing probably is because of overheating. If the CPU over heats, that is the main cause of freezing. Do you hear the fans kick in during installation or does it remain off? Instead of installing the whole base system. Simply use the net-install CD and install the most basic system. This means when you are asked to select what kind of install you want, disable the 'Desktop System'. Another way to test out the theory is to run the debian cd in rescue mode and just leave it on. In this case you are not installing anything but simply running from the CD. If this freezes still then it is most likely the CPU overheating. Also make sure there are no obstructions blocking the heat vents or fan air flow. Good luck, Amit -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-powerpc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". I was able to get it to work using the following command: fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --revision=rt2x00 --arch=powerpc --cross-compile=/home/amit/src/buildroot-2009.05/build_powerpc/staging_dir/ usr/bin/powerpc-linux- kernel_image I used buildroot to build the cross compiler toolchain. I was going to use emdebian but they did not have a working set for powerpc arch. Note that above I compiled the rt2x00 kernel branch since I needed to use the driver. However, this should work with any kernel. And as a final step, I had to generate the initrd image manually and set up the symbolic links for initrd and vmlinux to point to the build kernel. The initrd image was built using the following command: update-initramfs -c -k 2.6.30-rc6-wl Hope this helps somebody. Cross-compile PPC kernel on x86
I am trying to use an x86 host desktop PC to compile a kernel for an old PBG4. I got as far as setting up a cross compiler toolchain for powerpc (using buildtroot). I copied the config file over and made the necessary changes. At this point I would like to use the make-kpkg command but how do I specify the paths for the proper toolchain to use? Right now I am using the command: make-kpkg --initrd --cross-compile powerpc --revision=test.kernel_image Am I proceeding correctly? I'm trying to set up the Belkin Wireless USB adapter on a PowerBook G4 running Squeeze. I followed the instructions on http://wiki.debian.org/rt2870sta and installed the 2.6.29-2 image. When you do an 'ls -l' you will see that infact these are symlinks to a specific kernel image in /boot. So to use the newer kernel simply symlink the initrd.img and vmlinux to their respective kernel versions. For example in my lenny system they are: initrd.img -> initrd.img-2.6.26-1-powerpc vmlinux -> vmlinux-2.6.26-1-powerpc Good luck Amit -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-powerpc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". The way I see it is I don't think we will see a new kernel in lenny. Now, we can probably further isolate the issue by doing the following: 1. Get the debian source package and build it ourselves. See if that prevents the issue. 2. Try out latest kernels 2.6.27 and 2.6.28 (by building from source) and see if that prevents the issue. What do you think? I am using powerbook 3,2 with ATI Rage Mobility M3 AGP 2X. Suspend to RAM works sporadically. The disk spins down but the machine locks up and leaves the display on. This did not happen in Etch. I tried using the -r switch as stated in the s2ram man page but no luck. The driver I am using is r128. Any ideas? You're right, I guess we can't disable the "hardware" directly but if we let gcc know about this then it is possible that it will do further optimizations correct? For example, I can compile a C program using regular gcc without any options and then adding the following and comparing the differences: "-mcpu=7400 -O2 -pipe -maltivec -mabi=altivec" This way the compiler "knows" about the hardware and tries to optimize the program based on that. [OT] Disabling hardware speculation support in GCC flags
Hey guys, I'm learning the PPC architecture and I have a PowerBook G4 (7410) 500MHz. Looking at the datasheet for the processor, it has support for hardware speculation which allows out-of-order execution. I wanted to test program run times by compiling using gcc with flags that enable and then disable support for this hardware speculation feature. This is just to see the difference between program run times. Any ideas which flags/options I should be using in gcc? Suspend to RAM issues with Lenny
I dist-upgraded from Etch to Lenny successfully a couple of weeks back. Everything works as expected, however there were xorg issues that were resolved by adding modeline configurations (See link). http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=429432 Lenny recently upgraded the kernel to 2.6.26 and there has been issues with suspending to RAM. The hard drive spins down but the display remains active and the machine freezes (have to turn off power manually). The last message on the display is "Suspending console(s)". This was not an issue with Kernel 2.6.25. Machine specs are: * Powerbook 3,2 * 500MHz G4 * 512 MB RAM * ATI Rage Mobility M3 8MB VRAM. Anybody experiencing similar issues? X.org composite and nv driver
Hello fellow powerpc users, What is the state of composite on nvidia-based powerpc macs? I guess its not really dependent on architecture but more on the choice of graphics card on many macs. Specifically, nvidia based macs seem most affected by this. As far as I know, nvidia only provides proprietary drivers for intel users. Currently, I am running Debian lenny on a G4 mac that has an nvidia geoforce 2MX graphics chip. I am using the 'nv' driver and everything works great so far. However, trying to use composite results in some annoyances. First, with XFCE 4.4.2 with composite enabled the shadows work fine but transparency in the terminal application is not functional at all (What I get is full transparent terminal with black background on the terminal text, window decorations such as close button is not drawn). Second, I tried using the awesome window manager with xcompmgr and get same behavior as above (shadows work, transparent terminal does not). I did some research and here are the notes that I found: * 'nv' driver is only for 2D, it does not support 3D acceleration. * The only choice for 3D in nvidia+powerpc is the 'noveau' driver. It is still not fully developed but I will try it out if there is no other choice. What do you guys do for composite? Sorry for the long post... I don't think it is anything to worry about. But again I could be wrong, so it would be interesting to find out if it was some other issue. There is an ongoing issue with the r128 driver. With debian etch there isn't any problem. I tried installing lenny on this machine and I couldn't even get X to start. I posted on this list and it looks like the driver broke things after version 6.6.3. Lenny uses 6.8 i think? As one of the earlier poster stated, that he had similar issues with version 6.7..while 6.6 had no problems. I switched back to etch on this laptop and everything worked like magic. So right now I am back to running etch on this machine, which is great. I just had to recompile a lot of the software that I needed (claws mail 3.4.0, pidgin, etc.) but it didn't take too long since I knew what I was doing and which libraries to install. The main reason I had for installing lenny was so that I didn't have to recompile most of the software that I needed. However, i guess it still has some issues on the ppc architecture. For example, power management/sleep is broken. Debian is actually the best for this laptop. I set up everything from a basic net install and I have a system that is super fast and efficient. Mac OS X crawled on this. And I don't any other distro for ppc will come close to this...and for ppc there really isn't much of a choice except for fedora and suse but both of them wouldn't even boot on this system (xorg issue again) but anyways debian etch has given life to this system...and im quite happy with it. I hope that the xorg issue gets fixed in lenny before that becomes stable thanks, amit

I have a PowerBook G4 running etch that I would like to upgrade as well. As for your problem, I think you might have to upgrade to kernel 2.6.24. Here is a part taken from kernelnewbies.org: 2.3. New wireless drivers and configuration interface New wireless configuration interface In Linux 2.6.22, Linux got a new wireless stack. This new stack is backwards compatible with the old ioctl-based configuration of the old stack. However, the new stack was designed to have a much better configuration interface, based on netlink. While the backwards compatibility isn't going away, all wireless configuration tools are recommended to have long-term plans to switch to the new interface. Drivers In Linux 2.6.22, the mac80211 (formerly d80211) wireless stack was merged, but not many drivers that use this new stack have been merged (only one). Linux 2.6.24 will have a lot of new wireless drivers using the new stack; 2.3 MB of source files in total: * iwlwifi driver for the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG/BG Network Connection and Intel Wireless Wifi Link AGN (4965) adapters (commit) * rt2x00 driver for Ralink wireless hardware (rt2400 pci/pcmcia, rt2500 pci/pcmcia, rt61 pci/pcmcia, rt2500 usb, rt73 usb). Check the hardware matrix (commit) * adm8211 driver for the ADMtek ADM8211x based wireless cards. These are PCI/mini-PCI/Cardbus 802.11b chips found in cards such as: Xterasys Cardbus XN-2411b, Blitz Netwave Point PC, Trendnet 221pc, Belkin F5d6001, SMC 2635W, Linksys WPC11 v1, Fiberline FL-WL-200X, 3com Office Connect (3CRSHPW796), Corega WLPCIB-11, SMC 2602W V2 EU, D-Link DWL-520 Revision C (commit) * b43 driver for modern BCM43xx devices. This driver supports the new BCM43xx IEEE 802.11G devices, but not the old IEEE 802.11B devices - those are supported by the b43legacy driver. This driver uses V4 firmware, which must be installed separately using b43-fwcutter (commit) * b43legacy driver for legacy BCM43xx devices from Broadcom (BCM4301 and BCM4303) and early model 802.11g chips (BCM4306 Ver. 2) used in the Linksys WPC54G V1 PCMCIA devices. Newer 802.11g and 802.11a devices need the b43 driver. This driver uses V3 firmware, which must be installed separately using b43-fwcutter (commit) * p54 driver for prism54 softmac pci/usb hardware (commit) * Driver for Marvell Libertas 8385 Compactflash 802.11b/g cards (commit) * Libertas sdio driver (commit) There are also a lot of network (non-wireless) drivers being merged, look at the section 2.14, "new drivers ** Amit -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Will using kernel 2.6.24 make my laptop faster?
Hey guys, I apologize for the fairly primitive question. But I have been fairly curious as to the advantages of compiling the most recent kernels. As I understand, the new kernel has a new scheduler (CFS). Haven't seen much benchmarks but the early ones I have seen showed some fairly decent performance gains. Next, I am using Debian Etch on a old 500MHz PPC system. Thus, if there any performance improvements, they probably would be noticeable on old system like this. And finally, there should be no risks in compiling a new kernel right? If I am not mistaken, I can choose (at start-up) which one to boot from. Actually one more thing, any benefits to doing this? Besides the geek satisfaction that all of us get from compiling a new kernel. Thanks, Amit -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? PowerBook G4 screen in Debian not as bright as Mac OS X or OpenBSD
Hey guys, I have Debian 'etch' installed on this system and my God it is a beautiful system. It gives life back into this old baby. No major issues at all. Great job by the developers! However, I have a small issue with the brightness level. I had OpenBSD (4.1) and Mac OS X (10.4) installed at one point and the brightness level was much higher than what I have here in Debian. I installed pbbuttonsd and brightness keys were working but still can't get it as bright as OpenBSD or OS X. Searching the ppc mailinglist suggest the use of ikeys to give 15 brightness levels? But checking aptitude it seems that this package is out of date and would conflict with the installed pbbuttonsd. Any suggestions? Any one have similar experiences? Thanks! Perfect! I currently use the mouseemu package so I will go ahead and take your suggestions and apply it there. Thanks again! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: How to modify default keyboard map in PowerBook G4
Another issue that I had. How I do copy and paste between applications and terminal windows? With PC and full sized keyboard, I simply use 'Shift + Insert'. Do you have any suggestions as to how it would work in a PowerBook keyboard (I can't seem to find and insert key). Amit -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Thanks for the quick response. That did the trick! I just simply installed it from aptitude and it works as expected. Thanks! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
How to modify default keyboard map in PowerBook G4
Hey Guys, Just installed Debian etch and it's working great! Only issue is with Midnight Commander. Debian has automatically detected the F1-F6 keys in the PowerBook as brightness +/-, volume +/-, numlock, and mute, respectively. Now, I can't seem to use MidnightCommander F1-F6 since they are mapped to the above mentioned keys. Anybody has similar issues? Any suggestions? If I do remap the keyboard, how do I adjust screen brightness as I am currently not using any desktop environment?
