Re: Recommendation for scanner/printer/fax/copier

Hi,

You can find a guide for flatbed scanners at my web site. However, its
not Linux centric, since I am from DTP/Repro world. You have to check
Linux compatability if you select something.

Hi,

Try to use SuSE PPC 2.4.2 or 2.4.6 kernel branches, they come with
support for ReiserFS and JFS. 2.4.2 works just great, I see no reasons to
stick with 2.2.x anymore. See my web site (Linux Tips and Tricks) for
more details.

Adaptec 2940U2W (Apple OEM) Linux Compatability

2001-06-29 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I have Adaptec 2940U2W (Apple OEM) SCSI Card which Apple bundled with G4
for a while. Anyone have experience with this card under Linux?

Please note that Adaptec 2940U2W (Apple OEM) and retail Adaptec 2940U2W
seem to have different formware, and thus, may have (or may not, I hope)
compatability issues with Linux.

Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

I am currently running SuSE Linux, so I do not build deb. BTW, I do not
use Benh 2.4 tree, but rather SuSE-patched 2.4.2, works great, with PPC
ReiserFS support.

However, there are no instruction to build deb. I believe Debian has

Solution: ext2/boot & reserfs/root + yaboot

Olaf Hering and Jeff Mahoney from SuSE have identified problem in yaboot
which prevents to use ext2/boot & reserfs/root with yaboot under certain
circumistances. Fix will be available very soon.

This is reply from SuSE:

The current yaboot with reiserfs patch (avavilable on SuSE ftp) does NOT
supports yet separate /boot ext2 and root reiserfs partitions (it throws
in open formware). You have to make a single Linux partition or wait
until yaboot will be fixed.

SOLVED MOL Crash (was: ReiserFS + MOL = Crash)

2001-06-13 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

Finally, I solved really strange problem when MOL crashed if Linux
partition formatted as ReiserFS volume. Although main is currently
reformatted to ext2, the same problem did exists there, too, for some
time. I am 95% sure ReiserFS was not a culprit (I will try ReiserFS/MOL
this weekend anyway).

The problem actually was that MOL has one of this kind of bug:

a) parsing molrc;
b) logical evaluation of hardware/configuration info (the most common is
a typo like & instead of &&);
c) using link to or temp copy of outdated molrc. I found one old copy of
molrc in /usr/etc, although this file should be only in /etc.

Solution: if you have hard MOL crash, and until this issue will be
clarified and solved completely, I recommend manually remove all MOL
files from /etc and /usr/lib/mol, and do ONLY MINIMAL changes in molrc.

At least, it worked in my case, I have compiled MOL 0.9.58-1 and 0.9.59,
with glibc 2.2 and 2.2.17, and all the time MOL worked fine in both
console and X mode.

ReiserFS PPC + MacOnLinux = Crash

2001-06-09 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I just reformatted my root partition from ext2 to ReiserFS (I have single
Linux partition), reinstalled Linux, and everything is OK except except
MOL. I recompiled again both 2.4.2 kernel (with Endian-safe ReiserFS
support) and MOL, stripped again NW ROM, changed MOL prefs, but nothing
helped.

I think the culprit is the ReiserFS partition where MOL keep its temp
files, because I have the same setup as before, but it does not work
anymore.

Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

Problem with Linux/MacOS Printing - Please help

2001-05-15 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I have TCP/IP forwarding queues (via lpr old) to networked PostScript
printers defined in printcap and succesfully working with Linux and
Samba. Now I would like to make them work with MacOS9.

There are two choices, through Netatalk and through Apple Desktop Printer
(TCP/IP & LPR). Unfortunately, none seem to be work via Linux (although
direct AppleTalk printing bypassing print server from MacOS works).

1) --

Phaser740L|lp1|tek_phaser740_host-tek_phaser740_queue-Phaser740L|tek_phaser
740_host tek_phaser740_queue:\
:lp=:\
:rm=tek_phaser740_host:\
:rp=tek_phaser740_queue:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/tek_phaser740_host-tek_phaser740_queue-Phaser740L:\

:lf=/var/spool/lpd/tek_phaser740_host-tek_phaser740_queue-Phaser740L/log:\

:af=/var/spool/lpd/tek_phaser740_host-tek_phaser740_queue-Phaser740L/acct:
\
:ar:bk:mx#0:\
:tr=:cl:sh:

Above is my printcap entry (again, it work with Linux and Samba). I
create desktop printer (new Printer -> LPR) with Desktop Printing
Utility, enter Linux box IP address, and queue name "lp1". Verify command
returns OK status.

Anyway, printing from MacOS results PostScript error 8827 (I have
selected correct PPD file, and printer, Tektronix Phaser 740L, has
built-in PostScript L3 interpreter).

2) --

So, I went another way and edited Netatalk papd.conf file:

Phaser740_Linux:\
:pr=lp1:\
:op=wes:\
:pd=/etc/PPD/TEK740L.PPD:

The printer becomes visible via chooser, but again I've got PostScript
error. I removed :op=wes: statement, dropped PPD file definition, changed
:pr=lp1: to :pr= tek_phaser740_queue:, but it still does not work.
Instead of PostScript error appears another message "printer is not
responding to request".

I have checked spool directory permission (lp/lp), everything is OK. Of
course, I restarted netatalk after each change of papd.conf file.

Please help.

Thanks in advance.

LaserWiter TCP/IP Printing Problem

2001-05-08 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I have several print queues on Linux (with LPR old), working OK with
Samba. However, when I try to print from Mac with LaserWiter TCP/IP, I've
got error 8827.

I have created Desktop Printer with Desktop Printer Utlity (New Printer

status OK.

Printcap entry is below, but LaserWiter TCP/IP printing does not work no
matter which queue name I enter in Desktop Printer Utlity (Phaser740L,
lp1, tek_phaser740_queue). tek_phaser740_host is actually IP address of
printer iteself. Printer works OK with AppleTalk, but I would like to use
Linux print server for entire network.

RaiserFS PPC status

etc.).

I have two AppleTalk printers (LaserWriter 12/640 and Tektronix Phaser
740L), which needs to be working with Linux and Samba. I have created two
printcap entries (shown below), spool directories, .paprc files inside
spool directories, and updated papd.conf file.

Problems:

1) After sending PostScript job (with lpr) from Linux virtually nothing
happen (although spool file DOES EXIST inside spool directory). lpd and
Netatalk 1.499 are running (I can even send postscript file directly to
both printers with pap, but not lpr). Checking printers with papstatus
reports that both printers are OK. I have restarted Linux, but it did not
helped either. All permissions are also OK.

2) Printing from Mac results PostScript error.

What could be the problem? Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Andrei.

"<- comments" do not exist in config files, I've added them only in this
e-mail.

/etc/printcap

??? Networking printers/Samba + Netatalk [Resend]

2001-03-21 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

Sorry to ask again, but my problem still does exist...

I have two laser printers:

Tektronix Phaser 740 (B&W, PostScript, Ethernet, AppleTalk+Novell), and

Apple LaserWriter 12/640PS (B&W, PostScript, Ethernet, Duplex, AppleTalk
only),

both need to be shared via Linux print server (no direct printing), with
both Macs and PCs. lpd and apsfilter setup manual is somewhat confusing.

Does anyone has a guide, how-to or just suggestion how to do it? I have
HOW-TOs from Linuxdoc.org, not very helpful in my case...

PS. I have both Samba and Netatalk running OK, bot no CUPS.

Thanks in advance

KDE2.1 Control Center Glitch (PPC)

I have KDE2.1 running OK on my PPC. However, any attempt to use hardware

Any idea what I am missing?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Win2k and SAMBA problem

2001-03-16 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi, Morgan,

First of all, thanks for reply.

>This is almost certainly a very simple thing.

I know. The only question remain which.

>Have you turned on encrypted passwords?

Yes. I have turned WINS, also. I have tried other options, like Samba
announce (Win NT 5), protocol options and other, applied latest patches
to W2k, but nothing changed, Win98 works without problems, Win2k do not
see Samba server at all. This is obviously culprit of Win2k, but I could
not figure out how to find it.

Yes, it is so. But I also have guest shared folder, it should be visible
to everyone. However, Win2k can connect to my Linux box only through ftp
or www, but not smb.

OK, please do it. I am only need Win2k specific setup. Win98 do not have
problems whatsoever.

Win2k and SAMBA problem

2001-03-15 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I have Linux with Samba 2.07 + sevaral Mac and PC workstations. After
upgrading from Win98 to Win2k on 3 pcs they stopped to work with Samba.
In fact, Samba server is not visible anymore neither in 'My Network
Places -> Computers near me" neither in "Entire Network -> My Workgroup".
Other Win98 do not have any problem with Samba.

No Win network settings have been changed, and I do not have NT Domain
server whatsoever.

I have changed many Samba options, but nothing helped.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Kernel 2.4.2 Compilation Error

2001-03-13 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I am trying to compile stock stable 2.4.2 kernel from ftp.kernel.org with
on PPC, but ALWAYS got the following error message, no matter of settings.

pmac_pci.c line 550
PCI_DEVICE_ID_APPLE_KL_USB undeclared

I have enabled all USB, Input and other mac specific options and drivers,
but nothing helps. BTW, the same configuration work with compilation of
2.4.3 beta.

Thanks in advance for any suggestion.

PS. This is bogus function:

/* We don't want to enable USB controllers absent from the OF tree
 * (iBook second controller)
 */
int
pmac_pci_enable_device_hook(struct pci_dev *dev, int initial)
{
if (dev->vendor == PCI_VENDOR_ID_APPLE
&& dev->device == PCI_DEVICE_ID_APPLE_KL_USB) {
struct device_node* node;
node = pci_device_to_OF_node(dev);
if (!node)
return -EINVAL;
}
return 0;

However, it does not work with ANY ftp server. The error message is
Connection refused. Unexpected EOF in read-timeout.

What I did wrong?

Stupid Netatalk problem

2001-02-28 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I have installed Netatalk on my LinuxPPC box, configured it, but got a
stupid problem. The Linux box is visible as AppleTalk device, but it
refuses ALL passwords for ALL users (I am sure it rejects pw only). Could
not figure out why. My configs looks like this (others are default):

afpd.conf
"Linux AppleShare IP" -tcp -ddp -setpassword -savepassword -uamlist
uams_clrtxt.so

AppleVolumes.default
/home/ftp/ "FTP Folder" allow:andrei,@users,ftp,@public options:noadouble

Please help.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, Bob,

The Performa 6500/250 is the worst choice for Linux, I am not sure Linux
will work on this machine. You should better to use beige G3 or any
NewWorld mac.

I have edited X86 Config and changed path from dev/mouse to dev/usbmouse,

HFS Boot with tbxi-Type OS Chooser

2001-02-05 Thread Andrei Verovski
Hi,

I am managed to install SuSE Linux on my FireWire iBook without much
trouble (BTW, SuSE 7.0 CD also CANNOT be started on FW iBook, just like
Debian 2.2r2 CD). However, I am still not giving up Debian. I suggest to
explore the same technique I used to install SuSE for Debian, please let
me know what do you think.

After all, it works, it simple, and it do not require manual editing of
open firmware variables, and I use this HFS partition for file exchange,
too.

Here how to do it. Create small HFS partition and put there fake system
folder, yaboot, yaboot.conf and os-chooser. Stripped kernel sits on this
partition, checks for hardware and loads installer.

---

Yaboot.conf looks like:

default = linux # (or default = install, during installation)
timeout = 50

image = vmlinux
 label = install
 append = "ramdisk_size=64000 load_ramdisk=1 video=aty128fb:vmode:10"
 initrd = ramdisk.image.gz
 root = /dev/fd0

image = ultra0:10,/boot/vmlinux-2.1.18
 label = linux
append = "video=aty128fb:vmode:10"
 root = /dev/hda10

---

OS Chooser is actually TEXT file containing:

iMac,1 PowerMac1,1 PowerBook1,1 PowerMac2,1 PowerMac3,1 PowerBook2,1
PowerBook3,1 PowerMac2,2 PowerBook2,2 PowerMac3,3 PowerMac5,1 PowerBook3,2

Linux/PPC Yaboot bootloader

" get-key-map" " keyboard" open-dev $call-method
dup 20 dump
5 + c@ 08 = if
" Booting MacOS ..." cr " boot ultra0:9,\\:tbxi" eval
else
" Booting Yaboot ..." cr " boot ultra0:12,\\yaboot" eval
then

1010
... blah blah blah

--> Its type/creator should be changed to tbxi/chrp if you want to boot
Linux. SPACE used during stratup to switch between MacOS and Linux.

---

lilo.conf (LInux LOader configuration)

boot = /dev/hda12
timeout = 100
activate
default = linux
bootfolder = suseboot

image = /boot/vmlinux
label = linux
root = /dev/hda10
append = "load_ramdisk=1 video=aty128fb:vmode:10  "
other = /dev/hda9
label = macos
