pbbuttons - issues with lidclose->display off options (backlight remains off)
Hello, I am not sure if the reason behind this problem is pbbuttonsd, although I am fairly sure, I want to have a confirmation (this happens from time to time on my laptop). I have configured pbuttonsd to just turn off the display when on AC and the lid is closed. I found that, sometimes, when opening the lid again, the backlight will not be turned back on (I can see the locking screen of KDE); if I try o swith to a text console, the backlight is turned back on for a split second, I can see the display properly, then is back to off. Switching back and forth between the X console and a text console does not fix the issue, but the light-on-for-a-split-second thing is present. Also I have found that I can work arund the issue if I put the laptop to sleep and wake it up. (But even this work around doesn't always work for me since I am experincing lock-ups before sleep - nobody has an idea why). Does anybody else has this issues? Can someone confirm this? How can I fix it? Help would be appreciated. 8< $ LANG=C apt-cache policy pbbuttonsd pbbuttonsd: Installed: 0.7.5-2 Candidate: 0.7.5-2 Version table: *** 0.7.5-2 0 900 http://ftp.ro.debian.org unstable/main Packages 900 http://snapshot.debian.net unstable/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 8< $ uname -a Linux merci 2.6.18-rc5-merci #1 Wed Sep 13 23:44:36 EEST 2006 ppc GNU/Linux compiled from Linus' git version as it was on 2006-09-02 00:35:01.0 +0300 8< $ cat /etc/pbbuttonsd.conf # Configuration file for pbbuttonsd >= version 0.5 # for options see man pbbuttonsd.conf [SYSTEM] #userallowed = "" ; user who is allowed to use IPC autorescan= yes ; automatic rescan of event devices CmdTimeout= 8 ; timeout in seconds for launched scripts, etc. [MODULE PMAC] dev_PMU = "/dev/pmu" dev_ADB = "/dev/adb" TPModeUpKey = 225 + alt TPModeDownKey = 224 + alt TPMode= drag; 'notap', 'tap', 'drag' or 'lock' KBDMode = fkeysfirst ; 'disabled', 'fkeyslast' or 'fkeysfirst' Batlog= log ; 'none', 'cycle' or 'log' NoTapTyping = yes ; switch trackpad to 'notap-mode' while typing [MODULE POWERSAVE] onAC_Policy = performance ; 'nochange', 'powersave', 'custom' or 'performance' onAC_TimerAction = none; 'none', 'suspend-to-ram', 'suspend-to-disk', 'blankscreen' or 'shutdown' #onAC_CoverAction = suspend-to-ram ; see TimerAction for possible values onAC_CoverAction = blankscreen ; see TimerAction for possible values onAC_KeyAction= suspend-to-ram ; Action (see TimerAction) for the sleepkey onAC_SuspendTime = 36000 onAC_DimTime = 0 onBattery_Policy = powersave ; 'nochange', 'powersave', 'custom' or 'performance' onBattery_TimerAction = suspend-to-ram ; 'none', 'suspend-to-ram', 'suspend-to-disk', 'blankscreen' or 'shutdown' onBattery_CoverAction = suspend-to-ram ; see TimerAction for possible values onBattery_KeyAction = suspend-to-ram ; Action (see TimerAction) for the sleepkey onBattery_SuspendTime = 3000 #onBattery_DimTime = 1200 onBattery_DimTime = 0 SleepKey = 116 SleepKeyDelay = 0 ; values > 0 may be dangerous, if the power key is used to trigger sleep BWL_first = 22 ; first battery warnlevel, time in minutes BWL_second= 10 ; second battery warnlevel, time in minutes BWL_last = 5 ; last battery warnlevel, time in minutes Script_PMCS = "/etc/power/pmcs-pbbuttonsd %s %s %s" EmergencyAction = sleep ; action, if battery is critically low HeartbeatBeep = yes ; beep, if nothing else showed that the computer lives CPULoad_sleeplock = yes CPULoad_min = 5 ; value in percent CPULoad_period= 20 ; time in seconds NETLoad_sleeplock = yes NETLoad_min = 4096; traffic in Bytes/s NETLoad_period= 20 ; time in seconds NETLoad_device= "eth0 tun0" IBAM_DataDir = "/var/lib/ibam" [MODULE DISPLAY] LCD_Brightness= 15 ; initial LCD brightness level LCD_FadingSpeed = 5 ; 0 = no smooth fading LCD_AutoAdjust= yes ; only on Aluminum PowerBooks LCD_IllumUpKey= 225 LCD_IllumDownKey = 224 LCD_Threshold = 94 ; ambient light threshold in percent for backlight autoadj. [OT] Airport Extreeme - should I buy one?
Hello, Next week I will be in Spain and was thinking, since the Apple distribuitors in Romania have some outrageous prices, I could buy an Airport Extreeme card. I started reading some reviews and saw that some people are complaining that the quality of the card is lousy (not being able to see all APs, lousy signal and similar stuff). What do people which own such cards advice? Do they work well (under Linux, of course)? I was able to reproduce the lock yesteday by booting, putting the laptop imediately to sleep, working/browsing/chatting in X, then (suspecting the locking will appear) closed all apps, tryied to put the laptop to sleep (short pressing the power button) and the X session blocked. PowerBook5,2 = Which brand? (slightly off toppic)
Hello all, I have been thinking of adding more RAM to my powerbook, but I realised that I am not sure about the Apple identification scheme giving correct answers for me, so I don't know what kind of RAM I need. I have a PowerBook5,2 and looking at apple identification guide[1] I don't see a laptop with a G4 running at 1GHz and firewire 800, although the port layout is simillar to what they call PowerBook G4 (15-inch FW 800), (15-inch 1.5/1.33GHz). So question: 1) What is the correct type of RAM for this laptop? 2) Does it need a special brand of RAM? I can easily buy Kingmax, but I am not sure if I won't run into trouble. The powerpc architecture ubiquitous problem: sound
Hello all, I have upgraded my kernel to 2.6.16.17 (vanilla, self built) forced by the recent udev incompatible changes and I thought that I will use snd-powermac. It seems that I can't get sound without using esd. Now, the fun part; every sound begins loud (or should I say at a normal level) and then is almost imediately attenuated, resulting in annoyance and really low volume in general. With dmasound-pmac the volume used to be a lot louder and didn't had this kind of issues. I have tried using the system without esd, but couldn't (some errors, sorry I have tried it some time ago, I could try again to get the exact error). Does anybody has sound working better than this for a PowerBook5,2? Any ideas how to fix this (without returning to dmasound-pmac)? -- Regards, EddyP = "Imagination is more important than knowledge" A.Einstein -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". In general you'd be encouraging people to install proprietary video drivers from NVidia and ATI. I think you are confusing 3D acceleration with OpenGL acceleration. I have a ATI (Radeon mobility 9600) based PPC machine and I use the r300 free drivers and I have OpenGL acceleration. These drivers would need x86 emulation on most of the platforms Debian supports, but nobody has yet been insane enough. That kind of insanaty is not needed. Better use that energy, if anybody thinks about it, to write the 3D acceleration part for the drivers. Another thing to do before release: run under valgrind while playing thousands of evil (use the flasm program) or slightly-corrupt files. Some of us like to keep a browser running until reboot (months) with many dozens of windows open. A plugin-induced crash is really infuriating. That is your choice; I think is possible to configure the browser to run flash movies as you wish, embedded or not. C++ and OpenGL are not so good for anything that is supposed to run fast. Where did you got that idea from? There is nothing wrong with C++ and compilers have evolved that much that in some cases the code is smaller and sometimes faster than the average code produced by a C compiler. Most of the lag comes, usually, from a badly designed set of classes. I've tested this on Frank Lichtenheld's Powerbook G4 laptop, and all keys are mapped OK for the German keyboard. The only change from the USB-MAC keymaps is that the apple key no longer works as the modifier key. Instead these can be accessed using Fn-Alt, which can probably be explained as that is probably equivalent to the right-Alt key on "regular" AT keyboards on i386. AFAICT the options are: - should the AT keymaps be made to support the apple key as modifier key or - should we go back to using the USB-MAC keymaps for powerpc or - should powerpc users learn to use Fn-Alt instead of the apple key Going back to USB-MAC keymaps is possibly not the prefered option because as I understand it the input layer of the 2.6 kernel translates everything to "AT", so in principle all architectures should now use AT keymaps. What do I mean by lock-up? - Sometimes the mouse is still moving, but no clicks are accepted. - Also the keyboard seems to be dead, or the system does not respond to any keyboard input. - The current image is frozen and switching to other consoles does not work. - happened only in X - background processes are working (laptop-net beeps on removal of cable and recoupling) - I can login by ssh; top reports Xorg consuming 80% - 90% CPU - the system is responsive from the ssh login Info follows: merci ~ # cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 cpu : 7447/7457, altivec supported clock : 999MHz revision: 0.1 (pvr 8002 0101) bogomips: 665.26 machine : PowerBook5,2 motherboard : PowerBook5,2 MacRISC3 Power Macintosh detected as : 287 (PowerBook G4 15") pmac flags : 001b L2 cache: 512K unified memory : 256MB pmac-generation : NewWorld merci ~ # uname -a Linux merci 2.6.14-merci #1 Sun Nov 13 00:48:01 EET 2005 ppc GNU/Linux This is what I found weird in dmesg output: [ 149.970390] adt746x: Setting speed to 0 for CPU BOTTOMSIDE fan. bluetooth mouses not working in recent Debian bluez-utils
Hello, I have just seen recently that my bluetooth mouse has stopped functioning (I haven't been using it daily so I can't say when this regression happened). The device is discovered if I hcitool scan. Please also note that I might not have a recent version as I couldn't update for some time (conectivity issues). Can somebody say if they encountered this problem with current versions of bluez-utils? (I have tested older kernels that I know that worked in thepast) With hcidump I see that there is some feature which is not supported, apparently, but I have used this mouse before. AIUI, this should allow me to put my PB 5,2 to sleep while a usb stick is mounted and come back from sleep with no problem and the stick to be still mounted, right? -- Regards, EddyP = "Imagination is more important than knowledge" A.Einstein

Mouse movements not identified as activity (sleep in 2.6.12)
Hello, I have a little problem with the sleep functionality in 2.6.12. While i am browsing sometimes I see a warning from gtkpbbuttons-gtk that the laptop (PowerBook 5,2) will go to sleep (and the counting starts. This happens and does not stop when I click the USB mouse attached to the laptop, while is stops if I tap the touchpad or press a few keys. Why is this happening? Does anybody else has this problem? They are completely untested so be prepared for problems with the first couple of rounds. Please report any issues with the snapshots to [EMAIL PROTECTED] As long as they are problems with the snapshot build and packaging process I will try to resolve them ASAP. The new snapshots also include a package for the experimental R300 driver. I hope the R300 developers are fine with exposing their work to a larger audience. ;-) Best regards, Felix -- | Felix Kühling <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://fxk.de.vu | | PGP Fingerprint: 6A3C 9566 5B30 DDED 73C3 B152 151C 5CC1 D888 E595 | --- This SF.Net email is sponsored by the JBoss Inc. That naming convention just reduces the randomness in some corenr cases, as most use two or more identical ethernet cards, when needed. Mixed configs is rare and hapens mostly only in amateur environments. It does not help in proffesional ones (or maybe I am missing some detail) I am _totaly_ sure there is a way to assign a certain ethX number to a specific kernel module in some config files (/etc/network/interfaces and/or /etc/modules or alike; unfortunately I can't remember right now). The weird thing is that with kernel 2.6.9 this problem was not present and now the level 1 of luminosity is not really level 1 when coming back from 0 luminosity, while when coming from level 2 the behaviour is normal. -- Regards, EddyP = "Imagination is more important than knowledge" A.Einstein
Video sync issues on 2.6.12(-rc3, I think), reloaded
Hello all, System: Powerbook G4 (sept 2004) OS: Debian PPC GNU/Linux Linux: 2.6.12(-rc3, I think) I have a problem with video synchronization, sometimes when returning from sleep. The image is kind of scrambled. I saw that putting the laptop back to sleep and getting back from sleep (sometimes a few more times) fixes the problem. Ben suggested to try something; turning the luminosity to 0, then back to a positive value - this fixes it (sometimes after a few tries, is kind of cyclic). I wanted to know if this problem is fixed in the newer version of the kernel, so I would know is compiling a newer linux would be a good idea.. (I have mentioned this before and Ben was kind enough to give me an answer, but I never digged into the problem again.) -- Regards, EddyP = "Imagination is more important than knowledge" A.Einstein
