Yah! This is where I have found how to start a Mac Plus that someone gave me : 
it can boot any MacOs till 7.5.5. With his extended 4MB of RAM, it can know

I think People discovering Linux with hardware more than 10 years old should 
know that it will show how linux can deserve them...

I suppose it is a model with no fan on the CPU, so it uses the heat of the 
monitor to recycle air around the CPU. So, you cannot turn off the screen of 
the G4 iMACs without suspending to RAM (can it?) the Debian system (this is 
what MacOS 9 does on my system).

Yes, it uses ATI's proprietary MPEG acceleration, which specs never were 
released. It was the same on x86, for the same class of machines. Only Intel 
gave an open source driver with used the same functions on his 810 
hardware and NVidia brought that for Linux in a closed source way for his 
Geforce 4 series.

 Compositing has always been a problem for me as well. I think it has to
 do with the graphics chip. You might want to checkout if you chip has
 compositing support. Try 'man radeon' to get a list of supported cards.
 Or man 'ati'.

Tha same chip on x86 works fine. So I think the problem is that the driver has 
some PPC only bugs, and not enough people to work on them... I have the same 
problem with the ATI 128 VR of my iMAC DV

You must indicate in the xorg.conf that you want to use a virtual screen 
bigger than your laptop's one. Here is what I have for two 1024x768 screens 
side by side.

EndSection

You will need 1280+1024 (I suppose a typo in the 1200) horizontaly so :

Virtual 2304 1024

Than as said you can get it OK with something like (my own script, adapt to 
your config) :

xrandr --addmode VGA-1  1024x768
xrandr --output VGA-1 -s 1024x768
xrandr --output VGA-1 --auto
xrandr --output VGA-1 --right-of LVDS


You may have some problems with 3D (DRI) as 2304  2048...

If it is a heating problem, it may have dust.
To make what you want, I'd do a cron job that suspends the computing for 20

As far as I know, G3 is not oldworld. 

   Using the Debian-Etch-PPC net install CD, I booted up with my MacOS 9 
 CD.
 However when booted with system CD, it can't see the Debian Net install cd
 if I put it in the scsi CD drive. If I reverse this, and put the MacOS 9 in
 the scsi CD player, it boots fine, but sill doesn't see the Debian net
 install cd, in the onboard ata CD Drive. So, I can't start the install.


You should boot from the Debian Install CD to install it!

dri (3d acceleration) on ati 128

hi,

after a long crawl on the web, I understood that dri worked for iMAC DV video 
card (ATI 128 VR) until xfree 4.2 was out. Then, an engine timeout makes the 
thing lock the whole system. On x86, dri is still working.

Is there any user using such an old debian system? What Debian release would 
you recommend me to get this 3D thing working?

halt problem

hi, I'm having a problem with shutdown on Testing : it only reboots the 
system. With Stable, it shuts down the system.

Is it a known problem? A misconfiguration?
