Yes, that is absolutely possible. MultiArch works fine on PowerPC as well.

powerpc + ppc64 architecture

2023-05-24 Thread Martina Hřebcová

Hello,

I appologize for maybe a little stupid question. I have Debian Sid now on
Powermac G5 ( thanks to Adrian for last .iso ) and AmigaOne X1000, both are
64-bit systems and I want to test also 32-bit powerpc software. Sid have now
64-bit kernel and userpace.

May I add 32-bit powerpc by standard way: "dpkg --add-architecture powerpc"
?

Or are there any issues?

thanks

Re: New Debian Sid installation - how to?

2023-05-18 Thread Martina Hřebcová

Hi Adrian

P.S. very likely the cause of boot problems is on my side, not installer one.

If I checked partitions with OSX and then with linux, it differs. And the
difference is in my two grub partitions. Using disk tools from different OS
causes some mismatch.

I will reorganize disks, and for Debian will be dedicated one.

Those aren’t boot-related issues, but you’re just missing the firmware for your
graphics card.

Please boot the machine with “nomodeset” and install the
“firmware-graphics-amd” package.

Thanks for advice, I will do this first.

Yes!  I had from previous version grub partition size 128 MB and now is
needed at least 256 MB.

Interesting is, that instaling of grub-ieee.. package has no error output,
but simply hangs.

So sorry of false alert, installer now works fine. Thank you very much!

That does not work. /boot/grub must be an HFS partition, otherwise the
installation of the GRUB bootloader will fail. I recommend using the
default partition layout for the time being.

Thanks, it saves my time. I have another idea - I haven't check the size
of my /boot/grub partiton.

I used old grub partition from times when Debian drops yaboot. ( Debian
9 probably). Maybe this new grub version requires more space.

Yes it could. My Powermac Quad has now issues with thermal calibration,
I have to check and clean everything. Fortunatelly it has no coolant
leakage. But other hardware like disk controllers woks fine under OSX
and MorphOS.

In most cases it's a memory module problem and it's not unusual that the
problem shows with some operating systems only.
Powermac ASD firmware diagnostics shows all RAM modules OK. But it is
good point - I can try installation with only two other modules - i.e. 4GB

I have also iMac G5 stored in basement, so I can try installation here.
But later, my daughter is getting married this weekend :-)))

Testing on a different machine is definitely a very good idea!

PS: All the best for your daughter's marriage!

Many thanks !!!

Yes, I am used HFS ( not+) partition, with /boot/grub mountpoint. And

If I skip installation of grub, do somebody know where I can find tested
grub package? Or I try do it manually with .iso grub directory.

There is no tested grub package as the packages are constantly updated.

OK I will try some things manually.

Your issue could be a hardware problem, too. I will give it a try inside QEMU
later.

OK, it was enough to disable firmware support in the CD configuration for now

Tried just now, and installation of base system ends with error:

"An error was returned while tryingto install zstd package onto the target
system."

Tested on Powermac G5 Quad core. Sysylog is in attachment.

Please, may I post it somewhere, or is ir OK this way?

Re: Why it's so difficult to fix PowerMac booting for good

2023-05-10 Thread Martina Hřebcová

Hi Adrian!

thank you for detailed explanation. I am in situation, when installing
Debian Sid after several years. Previously I have Debian 8 ( with yaboot
) and then Debian 10 with some grub workaround. I simply forgot howto do
it an cannot find the new how-to.

This info is perfect. So I will use latest .iso ( with or without
hfsprogs ), boot in expert mode and install Debian base system only, and
the rest I will do manually.

thanks

On 5/10/23 10:24, John Paul Adrian Glaubitz wrote:

Hello!

Since this topic is coming up from time to time, here a short rundown why
making the bootloader installation on Apple PowerMac systems work properly.

Installing a bootloader on a PowerMac requires an HFS or HFS+ partition where
the initial bootloader must be copied and "blessed" such that the firmware of
a PowerMac finds and loads the bootloader. The detailed process is explained
here [1], for example. In debian-installer, this process is performed by the
grub-installer script [2].

One of the problems here is that the tool for creating HFS/HFS+ filesystems
is covered by a license that Debian considers non-free [3]. This resulted
in the package being moved to the "non-free" section which is currently
unsupported
by Debian Ports meaning I always have to inject the hfsprogs package into
debian-
installer manually when building an installation image for powerpc or ppc64.

As a result, every installation image that was build without this manual package
injection will not work. There are some ISO images on the cdimage server where
that indeed is the case. If you run into a problem where the bootloader
installation
doesn't work, it's therefore advisable to try a different image.

Another problem is that blessing currently only works using the "hattrib"
command
from the hfsutils package which supports HFS but no HFS+ filesystems. While GRUB
seems to come with its own blessing utility which supposedly supports HFS+
filesystems,
I never got that to work.

If we could get Apple PowerMac machines to boot from a FAT filesystem, the
licensing
issue with hfsprogs would no longer be a headache. According to Apple's
documentation,
booting from a FAT boot partition should work [4] but I have never gotten
around to
testing that.

So, if anyone has the time and enthusiasm to be able to get an Apple PowerMac
to boot
off a FAT partition, please give it a try and let me know. If it works, we can
replace
the current bootloader installation in grub-installer [2] and fix the issue for
good.

Until then, we will have to resort to manual installation image builds.

New Debian Sid installation - how to?

2023-05-09 Thread Martina Hřebcová

Hi,

after several years I want to install Debian Sid again on my Powermac G5
Quad  and AmigaOne X1000.

Please, what is the right steps for installing on Powermac G5?

1. I tried debian-11.0.0-ppc64-NETINST-1.iso from
/cdimage/ports/snapshots/2022-12-09

but there is no hfs tools and installation fail

2. I tried debian-11.0.0-ppc64-NETINST-1.iso from
/cdimage/ports/current, dated 2022-03-28

installation works ( with some issues with expired keys, which can be
solved ) but in section "configuring grub-ieee1275" it hangs:

- /target/boot/grub is mounted, hfs formated, rw, and there is some
other files, so is writable for sure

- last syslog messsages are:

Creating config file /etc/default/grub with new version

 Installing for powerpc-ieee1275 platform

Please, first of all, what is the right last working installation .iso
for ppc64 be ?

And are there needed some additional workarounds ( like were with grub
in times of debian 10 / powerprogress.org ) ?

thanks

Yes, firmware is installed.

If yes, I'd suggest booting with

modprobe.blacklist=radeon

on the kernel command line (this will prevent the radeon kernel driver from
getting loaded automatically). Then once the system is booted up, log in via
SSH and run

sudo modprobe radeon

This way you should be able to capture dmesg output from loading the radeon
driver.
"
That’s helpful. I did not get the dmesg output via SSH, but at the console.
So the radeon driver loads the JUNIPER firmware, then the CYPRESS firmware
and then hangs up.

The last 5 lines are like this:

firmware:
direct-loading firmware radeon/JUNIPER_smc.bin
[drm] Internal thermal controller with fan control
[drm] radeon: dpm initialized
firmware: direct-loading firmware radeon/CYPRESS_uvd.bin
[drm] GART: num cpu pages 16384, num gpu pages 262144

And then it hangs up. Completely. :)

Thank you
Johannes

Johannes,

maybe it is offtopic, but do you have two cards? ( for open firmware/OSX +
linux )? Because in the case of two cards my Quad needs custom xorg.conf. By
default there is bad BusID.
