Re: Debian sid testing progress
Hi. It's been a while (several months) since I last updated my iBook G4 with Debian, but I recall some stuff not working correctly and I saw those mentioned in the thread pointed to in a previous email. On 2018-08-13 14:29, swamprock wrote: FWIW, I am currently trying to fix the Rust compiler on 32-bit PowerPC so that we will eventually be able to use Firefox and Thunderbird on PowerPC again. That would certainly be very nice, Adrian, since without that, we have essentially no browser on PowerPC (and, the ones that we had had many issues that I can't recall right now). BTW, which browsers are other people working? Brian, if you can, please tell other people to subscribe to the list or to use Thunderbird to read the list via news.gmane.org gateway (this way, people don't get flooded with emails if they don't read their emails in a timely fashion). Nice. I wish my coding skills weren't so old-school, or I could offer help beyond just testing. It would be nice to see Quantum's speed and efficiency (to the extent that it would be effective) on PPC machines. This could possibly have a carry-over affect on TenFourFox, the Mac OS X/PowerPC fork of Firefox-ESR, as Cameron is basically left to applying security patches and optimizations to the old ESR code. Some of the code (that is, the non-OSX parts) that Kaiser Cameron is producing (especially the Altivec optimizations to decoding videos and the JIT of Firefox) would be quite welcome if supplied in a clean fashion to Mike Hommey, the Debian maintainer of Firefox (who also happens to be an upstream developer at Mozilla). Thanks to all involved with maintaining this port. You're welcome. Please join us on #debian-ports on OFTC on IRC if you would like to get into contact. New help is always welcome. Will do, time permitting. I'll notify the MacRumors thread of your reply. Thanks! I saw people mentioning that playing videos with mplayer, vlc etc is slow on G4 machines. That is because packages in Debian are compiled for the lowest common denominator, which is no Altivec at all. Unfortunately, even if I grab the sources of the Debian ffmpeg package and recompile it with Altivec enabled, but without the -mabi=altivec (or something like that---don't recall exactly, since, as I said, it's been months without touching my iBook), there is no change in performance. Once I add that option (which changes the ABI), ffmpeg can transcode videos 2x as fast and so on. I expect the same things to happen with other multimedia libraries/programs (and other programs in general). Oh, some hints to get VLC, mplayer, mpv etc. working faster on the PowerPCs is to disable the loopfilter for H.264 videos (the "mp4" videos) and to enable the "fast" processing of lavf. Something like the following in your ~/.mplayer/config would help: lavdopts=fast=1:skiploopfilter=nonref You can substitute nonref by all (but then, the video gets very blocky). If you can/wish, you (and other members of the forum) can probably compile these facts as a FAQ on the Debian wiki (there is an Ubuntu wiki about PowerPC that is likely to be outdated, but it had some good advice that may not be appliable anymore, due to software having evolved). https://wiki.debian.org/PowerPC/FAQ https://wiki.debian.org/DebianOnPowerPC https://wiki.debian.org/PowerPC/SoundCards https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCKnownIssues (Maybe unify the contents of the pages above would help and also make clear what are the issues that are still present or not). Ideally, some of these issues could be automated and the installs should "just work". Specifying the MTD partitions in a device tree
Hi. I am sending this message to Debian/powerpc, Debian/arm lists because and linuxppc-dev. While the issue that I'm having is with a powerpc machine, the arm people may also be of valuable help with device trees, since they have to deal with them seemingly all the time. Anyway, the problem that I have is as follows: I have a Kurobox HG (powerpc) NAS that Riku Voipio donated me a few years ago. Everything worked fine and I was able to get Debian (since kernel 2.6.20 or similar) running up to with kernels 2.6.28 (if my memory serves me well). With kernel 2.6.29, the partitions of the MTD device that this machine has were not displayed anymore (only one big device was presented to the user). In a recent exchange [0] with Scott Wood from the linuxppc-dev, I was finally able to partition the MTD flash device with the original layout of the device by passing an `mtdparts` option to the kernel. [0]: http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ports.ppc.embedded/80215 It seems, though, that the proper way to fix this issue for good is to include such description in the DTS files for the particular board (in fact, at least 2---but potentially 4---boards are affected by this). I tried a few experiments with writing a patch to the existing dts files, but I wasn't successful, since I am not sure about a good amount of the things and I would appreciate some assistance here. In particular, I don't know if I filled all the fields correctly and, also, I don't know where I should graft the description of the flash chip in the rest of the device tree. Can anybody help here? I am sending a verbosely and dirty patch (not yet suitable for inclusion in the main kernel tree) that I created (and which didn't work) with as much information that I know about the system, but I can surely collect more information. Ideally, I would like to get many of the things automated and add support for the Kurobox HD/HG to the Debian installer, so that people with these devices can breathe new life into their systems (instead of the original 2.4.20 kernel that came with it). I would ge greateful for anybody that can help here. I hope to both learn and help with the maintainance of such machines. Alternative java/JVM working on armel/powerpc?
Hi there. I would like to run some programs that require a JVM on alternative platforms, like armel/powerpc (these are arches for which I have hardware running Debian, but others might also be of interest). (Please, feel free to cross-post this message to other ports, if you deem this to be relevant.) But anything related to Java is too slow on such architectures with the default, unoptimized Zero JVM and I'm having some problems while trying to use other JVM implementations that we have in the archive. Based on this information, is there anybody out there that can help with investigation of what works and what doesn't? I would love it if people could perform a simple test by installing the packages scala and clojure1.4? * Running clojure and typing (+ 1 1) (without the quotes) should give you back the answer 2. * Running scala and typing 1 + 1 (again, without quotes) should also give you back the answer 2. For each of these cases, does it get faster if you type it again (in which case the JVM might be caching things)? After that, can you install alternative JVMs? The packages are: * jvm-7-avian-jre (for the Avian JVM) * icedtea-7-jre-jamvm (for JamVM). To make each be use by default, simply reorder the lines in /etc/java-7-openjdk/jvm-your-arch-here.cfg In particular, does running with avian even work? All I got was an illegal instruction. It is supposed to be a fast and memory efficient JVM and would be a great thing to get running on arches where you can't upgrade your memory as easily as with amd64 or i386. No 3D on iBook G4
Hi there. I have an iBook G4 with a RV360/M12 [Mobility Radeon 9550] and I just (re)installed Debian on it. I mainly need only to play videos (like lectures from Coursera and other MOOC initiatives) and, honestly, I don't really care for 3D graphics, but the video players that I tried seem to do (especially when they choose an opengl backend). Anyway, with my current setup, I don't get any kind of OpenGL and I have provided a snapshot of how things are configured in my system at: http://www.ime.usp.br/~rbrito/linux/debug-r300/1385003057-g4-linux-3.12-trunk-powerpc.tar.xz Please note that I am currently booting with the options radeon.agpmode=-1 video=offb:off video=radeonfb:off After struggling a lot, I could get mplayer/mpv/vlc to play some videos if I force XV to be used as the video backend, but, with mpv, I get the following message: [vo/xv] X11 can't keep up! Waiting for XShm completion events... Creating a PowerPC task force?
Dear people, Motivated by: * the results of the last call to porters * the fact that PowerPC (at least) used to be an architecture where Debian shined * the lack of external support (which means that we should help ourselves) * the documentation that is too spread * the need of architecture-specific tools (pbbuttonsd? mouseemu? gtkpbbutons? anything that needs to be revived? yahoot? grub2?) I thought: perhaps are people out there that may be interested in shaping up the powerpc port of Debian? In fact, since: * Ubuntu doesn't offer an official PowerPC release anymore. * Apple has long given up updating the operating system for PowerPC users. * Major projects like Chromium/v8/nodejs are not available for PowerPC. * Firefox for PowerPC is essentially dead as far as Mozilla is concerned, with only a very bright enthusiast working on building it with JavaScript acceleration (http://tenfourfox.blogspot.com/), we are essentially orphans of the architecture. Again, would anybody else be interested in addressing the current problems that PowerPC seems to have? It would be super nice to work on having the installs as good as possible (meaning: working with as little fiddling as possible after a fresh install), integrating intelligence about snd-aoa, snd-powermac etc. in debian-installer, making the 3D thing work as well as feasible, automatically suggesting programs (alas, even firmware) that are of use for a powerpc user? What about this idea? Perhaps we can already grab/compile the resources that others have already kept (say, the Gentoo pages, which are very good, the Ubuntu PowerPC FAQ, which is another very good resource), an old document that I, a long time ago, started writing at https://github.com/rbrito/powerpc-tutorial etc. Of course, having both the document for those people that want to know how things are done and having the code that just works is the golden goal... Please, let me know if you are interested in joining efforts. I will only commit efforts if I see other people contributing, as I have my hands full already. Re: No 3D on iBook G4
Dear Michel, On Nov 21 2013, Michel Dänzer wrote: On Don, 2013-11-21 at 01:16 -0200, Rogério Brito wrote: I mainly need only to play videos (like lectures from Coursera and other MOOC initiatives) and, honestly, I don't really care for 3D graphics, but the video players that I tried seem to do (especially when they choose an opengl backend). I suspected that since my struggles with xine to get a DVD to be played with xine, but I needed an expert opinion. http://www.ime.usp.br/~rbrito/linux/debug-r300/1385003057-g4-linux-3.12-trunk-powerpc.tar.xz Looks like OpenGL is disabled due to the problem described in: https://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2013/11/msg00045.html To be honest, I didn't understand Rubén's intented message when he said ¡Oh, I see!. I guessed (incorrectly?) that he had solved the problem, but there were no further details... https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=71789 Someone will need to investigate this upstream in Mesa. Ah, OK, so I will try with a bitdepth of 16 as a workaround. For videos, that should definitely be enough (especially for low bitrate videos). But, well, I lied that I don't care about 3D at all: I would like to participate in this course here: https://www.edx.org/course/uc-berkeley/cs-184-1x/foundations-computer-graphics/1003 which says somewhere that the students will need an OpenGL 2.1 environment, at least. But that can wait. The current studies are more important than that one at this moment. Still, I would love to help so that I can get that working in time for the next offering (if I can be of any assistance). After struggling a lot, I could get mplayer/mpv/vlc to play some videos if I force XV to be used as the video backend, but, with mpv, I get the following message: [vo/xv] X11 can't keep up! Waiting for XShm completion events... This looks like it just can't keep with decoding / displaying the video in realtime. I didn't notice if frames were being dropped, but I will pay more attention and report back what I find after I finish this e-mail and experiment with the 16 bits per pixel. While this is obviously based on impressions, the whole system feels like everything is so slow regarding to graphics. :( One likely reason for the slowness is that you're disabling AGP with radeon.agpmode=-1. If your iBook isn't stable with the default AGP mode, try radeon.agpmode=1 or the other values. I will try it as well. I now remember that I reported a bug on kernel.org's bugzilla (to which you replied) which was related to this notebook locking hard whenever I played a video (it didn't matter the codec of the video). Also, not really sure if things are connected to this graphics thing or not, with Iceweasel 17, I can use things OK, but with Icewease 24, I simply get a segfault right at the start. Not necessarily WebGL, but it might be related to OpenGL, yes. Thanks for confirming that my impressions are, at least, not totally crazy. IIRC, iceweasel 24 was also when Mike Hommey enabled gstreamer playing in Debian. Not sure what gstreamer may be choosing as a backend to play HTML5 videos. One would need to look at a backtrace of a crash to tell though. The only thing that I tried at that point was a simple strace, but I guess that running iceweasel under valgrind/gdb would be the better thing to do. Then, just visit: http://www.youtube.com/html5 click the link at the bottom that says Join the HTML5 trial and youtube will send you a cookie that indicates that you prefer WebM videos. Then, when surfing many (most?) videos on Youtube, you will see them played right in Firefox. Only, when I follow the link at YouTube for that and land at the mozilla site, the site will only tell me I need a newer version of Firefox and won't I please download it now. Those browsers distributed by mozilla won't work on PPC machines, as they are compiled for x86 machines. If I go ahead and download it, will I have something that will run in Wheezy on PPC? No. Aternatively, is there any other way to acquire WebM? And will _it_ be useful on PPC? See above. Lots of ways of watching videos on non-{x86,x86_64} platforms. Re: Experiences on using zram with ARM?
Hi. 2011/7/14 Rogério Brito rbr...@ime.usp.br: As many ARM systems (and other embedded architectures) happen to be memory-starved, I thought about playing with zram (the new name of zramswap) on some of my systems, but I found out that not all platforms have zram enabled in the stock kernels in Debian. So, my question is: does anybody have experiences running zram with non-{i386,amd64} platforms? It would be nice to know before I start compiling many kernels and stuff. I sent this message about 5 days ago and I didn't have any responses in debian-arm. For that reason, I am resending it to debian-arm and also crossposting it to debian-{powerpc,user}. Any experiences shared here regarding the use of compressed ram would be more than welcome. Just for the record, if the module is available, it should be simply a matter of issuing: modprobe zram # load the module echo 67108864 /sys/block/zram0/disksize # size of RAM to reserve to be compressed mkswap /dev/zram0 # create a swap in that area swapon /dev/zram0 # use the swap on the compressed RAM The basic idea here is that by compressing a portion of RAM: * we may be able to hold more content in RAM. * while we use some CPU cycles, it should beat the option of going to disk. So, again, if anybody has any feedback on using this on a non-x86 arch, it would be very much appreciated. I would recommend it for others to try it and go back only if you have annoying problems. You problably won't, but who knows? :-) My main concern with yaboot has been (until now) its inability to specify initrd, unless given in cfg file. Typically with external disks, when root device has changed, and the boot stops. Is it possible with grub2 to specify initrd manually? As Michel already told you, this problem doesn't occur with grub2: it detects the kernels that you have already installed (with no need to mess with update yaboot.conf and run ybin), you can use tab-completion (very handy when you are in some difficult situation) and all your filesystems can be ext2/3/4, xfs, btrfs etc. I just converted things here (in both notebooks) to ext4, as I want to take advantage of delayed allocation and extents, so I don't know how it would work with something outside of the ext-family. I highly recommend it for other people. And, of course, once you are satisfied with it, you can simply set it as default in the NVRAM (say, with the boot-device variable of OF). Using a second screen with an iBook G4
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA384 Hi there. Since I have one iBook G4 here, I think that one use for it would be to put it to work as a home-theater PC. Unfortunately, it seems that we have some problems: * When I plug an external (1920x1080) monitor on it, I can only get 1024x768 on the external monitor, which is, of course, quite bad. More than that, I can only use the external monitor if I disable the internal monitor, because, otherwise, I get a message (paraphrased) that tells me that the largest screen that can be allocated is 1024x1024. I can provide the full details if desired. I am using gnome 2's monitor/randr applet to choose which output to use. This is weird, because I remember using a hack in OpenFirmware that unlocked the iBook's ability to use two screens as its monitor in the past. It worked fine with MacOS X 10.5, but I don't have MacOS X installed anymore. [0] [0]: http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html Is it possible to get rid of any of those limitations? Any one of the use of the external monitor in some higher resolution or the use of the external monitor as an extension of the internal one would be nice additions. * It seems that the ready made media center programs (XBMC) use a lot of OpenGL stuff and that is sufficient to bring this notebook to its knees, even when browsing the menus. Almost unusable. I tried moovida, and it is definitely faster, but it has some bugs and upstream seems to be dead (well, the released a closed source version, but that's only for other operating systems). This is a pity, since Moovida seems like a very good choice for weaker machines, but I don't know of any effort to continue maintaining the 1.x series. Sad. Finally, MythTV seems to insist in having a capture card installed in its backend and, for that reason, I didn't go much further with it. Any comments regarding this situation would be quite appreciated. Hi, Benjamin. On 04/24/11 12:26, Benjamin Cama wrote: I think this limitation is due to some Xorg configuration parameter. In the worst case of lack of memory, I think that I can try to lower the ColorDepth to, say, 16. It's not like I will be able to notice anyway. BTW, the “Open Firmware” limitation is just a hint for the OS, I think; you can get larger resolution in linux without this hack. It's just a soft limitation. Did not know about that. I thought (but have not investigated) that it had some effect on the device-tree that is exposed under /proc. Thanks for the comments. I will post back my results. BTW, just one invitation: what about if we documented some of the difficulties/solutions in the Debian wiki for PowerPC? That would be a very good thing with many good side effects, I think: * Documenting/making a compilation/knowledge base is fun. * It may help many others and can be used as a reference (and may help even ourselves when we forget the exact steps that we took a few months ago and need to repeat some procedure). * Make it easy to spot points that need to be fixed/automated in a way that the rest of the distribution works fine with PowerPC out-of-the-box. * Make it apparent that the PowerPC port is alive and healthy. The page at http://wiki.debian.org/DebianOnPowerPC is a good starting point. I have some collected stuff at https://github.com/rbrito/powerpc-tutorial which I surely wouldn't mind including in the wiki pages and, the parts that are suitable, in the Debian installation manual. Some things that are simple but which need to be written and not just part of the folklore are, for instance: * How can I prepare a rescue/live bootable CD for PowerPC? If our solution is good enough, this can be integrated into live-helper or whatever it is called nowadays. * Booting from a Firewire disk is probably well known for Mac users, but the same is not as well known for a USB stick/drive/whatever, despite this being simple enough (just a few lines). If other people would join me in this, I can start working on this, as I want PowerPC to have a long life (well, at least, as much as I have access to such hardware, but possibly more). Just for the record, I have revived *both* my iBook G3 600MHz and my iBook G4 1.33GHz so that I can develop with Debian here and both of them are working fine (today's sid), without any problems. In fact, since I keep my important files in a git repository and I clone it whenever I need to use another computer of my own, I can't tell (apart from the keyboard and the speed) that I am using old laptop, and not ia32 one. What is the most important feature in laptops? Standby mode. The machine wakes up but the desktop doesn't. Kernel or X issue? Here the issue may be hairy, because many things may be involved. More details? Then there are smaller things. Like Finnish keyboard mapping is not working out-of-the-box. This sucks. But I am sure that you can fiddle (for now) the contents of /etc/default/keyboard and have them reflected on X. Hard to see any progress here. Why is this happening for things that have been working in previous version? I had a long hiatus working on ppc here with Debian (and I am just returning), but I would say that the lack of people actively developing and testing makes things worse. Now that the bootloader problem seems to be partly addressed, I hope that we can have more people testing the daily installation images. I hope to get more involved with debian-boot/debian-cd when it comes to PowerPC, but I don't have many resources (I only have those 2 notebooks and one Kurobox). I know nothing about PREP/CHRP/other beasts. And Wheezy... what is it going to bring us? At least it doesn't boot at all without video=ofonly on any PowerMac i know. What kernel are you using? I am not having problems here with any kernel 2.6.39-rc. Something must have changed with the .39 release cycle, because the configuration files that I have don't work anymore. But I see that Debian only has 2.6.38 kernels precompiled... Enough complaining. Maybe I just had too high hopes. Well, perhaps Debian has set some good precedents and you are just used to them. :-) But the good thing is that we can fix those problems. Something that we don't want to happen to PowerPC on Debian
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA384 Dear people, I know that this is probably not as serious for PowerPC as it was for some other platforms, but it was, in my opinion, very sad to know that Debian has dropped support for 2 architectures: alpha and hppa. For some personal reasons, I felt particularly sad about alpha (I planned to buy one used machine for my own use), but, now, I sincerely hope that people more knowledgeable about the architecture reintroduce them as official ports of Debian again. As I would really hate to see these things happen to PowerPC, would other people join me in collecting data for a future requalification of PowerPC as a release architecture in Debian? Previous qualification/certification data are available in: http://wiki.debian.org/powerpcEtchReleaseRecertification http://wiki.debian.org/powerpcLennyReleaseRecertification I know that this may sound a bit premature at this stage, but it is better if we, as a whole, report the errors as early as possible (and, for those that can, provide a few patches), so that ppc is as healthy as feasible and not in any danger of being dropped out. A short tutorial on running GRUB2 on a PPC
(Please, keep me CC'ed, as I am not currently subscribed to -powerpc) Hi there. The post is here: http://rb.doesntexist.org/blog/posts/running_grub2_on_powerpc_macs/ Please let me know if you find this useful. BTW, I am just playing with getting Freevec on my computer (well, it should be faster, since Altivec is essentially not used in current Linux distributions) and I will keep those that want posted (if you want) when I have something to show. Well, right now, I have a very crufty solution that works for me, but that I am ashamed to publish and ruin the rest of reputation that I have. :-) Finally, a stupid question: is there anybody out there that knows if the current Iceweasel in experimental (4.0) has any kind of JIT for PowerPC? I mean, like TenFourFox (http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/)? If not, their patches are available (http://tenfourfox.googlecode.com/files/TenFourFox-changesets-20110323.zip). Hi there, Rick. (I am including the pkg-grub-devel list here, as it may be interesting to them). On Jul 14 2010, Rick Thomas wrote: I'm willing to give it a try on some of my test machines. How do I go about installing/testing Grub2 ? I wrote a summary of what I did some time ago: http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/2010/06/msg00028.html One particular point that may not be that obvious is that your current HFS partition may not be big enough to hold an initial grub2 image with all the modules (those found in /usr/lib/grub/powerpc-ieee1275/). Some of the modules may not be necessary, if you are only using something like ext{2,3,4} on your system: them, XFS, JFS, and Co. can be avoided to be included in that binary. Another thing that is worth noting is that the command to create that initial image seems to have been changed, and it should be grub-mkimage with a parameter --format=powerpc-ieee1275, instead of grub-mkelfimage. (Fear not: the comments above may not make sense if you have not yet tried to play with grub2, but they will after you read my e-mail listed above). Another slight problem that may make the automatic installation not so obvious is that the grub.cfg file will probably list the partition that you will be booting from as (hd0,foo), where it currently needs to be (hd,foo), without the zero after hd. I don't know if the hd0 string that the grub configuration puts in the grub.cfg is used with/taken from OpenFirmware (in case it would be the hd alias that OpenFirmware uses for the disk), but flexibilizing this for systems that may have more than one HD would be desireable (i.e., stay with the numbering with the HDs). But that doesn't prevent one from using grub2 right now. Hi there. I don't know if there is anybody out there that likes to read LWN (lwn.net), but they have an article about Linux on PowerPC and the fate of this architecture on this week's edition. http://lwn.net/Articles/395459/ The content is probably for subscribers only (but will be free'ed the next week). Have you tried installing pbbuttonsd and gtkpowerprefs? Alternatively, pommed may be of use here. But this ACPI stuff is, probably, just a peripheral matter. Everything looked OK, so I rebooted and mounted the WLAN stick. Unfortunately, nothing seems to be happening with it. 'lsmod' shows that module r8192s_usb has, in fact, been loaded (automatically), and 'dmesg' reports . Linux kernel driver for RTL8192 based WLAN cards . Great. Depending on how your wireless network is set up, you may want to install wpasupplicant etc. Also, the two-computer (Network Manager?) icon at the top of the screen that would normally drop down a setup dialog for a wireless network stays inactive. However, this is getting close, isn't it? Yes, it is, but debugging this will get quite harder now. I still would suggest you to pursue the road: , | git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git | cd linux-2.6 | cp /boot/any-config-that-you-want .config | make oldconfig | make deb-pkg ` And install the deb package that is generated. (You may, perhaps, have to install fakeroot for the make deb-pkg step, but that's just a minor package). And, if you don't delete this tree, you can periodically grab only the small changes that go into Linus's tree and keep following it, seeing the everything works as intended and having direct contact with the developers. Re: Making module for WLAN stick on iBook
Hi there. On Apr 12 2010, Sakari wrote: I installed 5.0.4 on an oldish iBook and was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was. Then I got greedy and wanted to run a WLAN stick. That's great. Can anyone comment on what is needed to build a module? I think kernel sources are needed (at least), Yes. but I cannot find a package for 2.6.26-2-powerpc, which seems to be the version here. My very first attempt failed because the original 5.0.4 installation did not even include the 'make' program. Would you be opposed to the idea of using a newer kernel? This driver is already part of the stock (read: Linus Torvalds's) tree, in the staging area (that is, drivers that are not yet of high quality, but which are getting improvements). Perhaps the newer precompiled kernels of Debian's testing or unstable already have this module neatly maintained so that you can simply install them an happily use your wlan stick. (I have not used Debian before, so I may be ignoring something completely obvious.) If you want to compile your own kernels, having only build-essential is enough (it will pull in various other packages needed for compilation of kernels). If you want to fine tune your kernel with specific options, you can also install libncurses-dev and run a more comfortable make menuconfig, select the features etc. And, to generate a proper deb package from upstream's sources, just use something (on the root of the kernel sources): make deb-pkg Regards from a member try to catch up with the debian-powerpc list, -- Rogério Brito : rbr...@{ime.usp.br,gmail.com} : GPG key 1024D/7C2CAEB8 http://rb.doesntexist.org : Packages for LaTeX : algorithms.berlios.de DebianQA: http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?login=rbrito%40ime.usp.br -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-powerpc-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Hi, Sakari. That's an important step. ** ibook:/usr/src# ls -al total 47528 drwxrwsr-x 2 root src 4096 2010-04-12 20:05 . drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 4096 2010-04-02 19:54 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 48606909 2010-03-09 23:10 linux-source-2.6.26.tar.bz2 ibook:/usr/src# ** So, there is only the .bz2 package. That is not enough, is it? Quite probably. Just unpack the .tar.bz2 package somewhere else and you will have the tree that was used to compile your kernel. Actually, a hint here: it is *not* necessary to compile your kernel as root. In fact, it is a good idea to use the root account as little as possible. The compilation of a kernel (or of a module) is not one that would require being the root user. Also, the directory that the earlier 'make' complained about, /lib/modules/2.6.26-2-powerpc/build, is still missing. Usually, /lib/modules/version/build is just a link to any place where the kernel is put. You can see where it is pointing to (or if it is not present at all) with something like: ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.26-2-powerpc/build When you unpack the kernel sources (and you can put it anywhere you like), just make sure the link cited above points to where you unpacked your kernel. I suspect there is some very basic capability that I lack to build modules. I mean, it's not just the A-Link WLAN module that cannot be built - I don't think I can build *any* module with the current setup. The compilation script/makefile that came with your module is looking for the kernel headers where /lib/modules/version/build is telling. Anyway, are you really sure that you wouldn't like to use a newer kernel? The 2.6.26.x kernels are way, way too old. Bug#557892: RFH: hfsprogs -- mkfs and fsck for HFS and HFS+ file systems
Package: wnpp Severity: normal I would kindly request assistance with maintaining the hfsprogs package, which is a pair of programs for mkfs and fsck for HFS/HFS+ filesystems. The package is developed by Apple, but only a small fraction of the package is actually used. The current packages in Debian use source code from Apple's MacOS X 10.4 version (codenamed Tiger). The original patches adapting things to Linux that I got were monolithic and I cleaned them up, broken them up (for ease of future work) and were ported forward against some 5 or 6 (I forgot how many) upstream releases, but still in the 10.4.x branch of their filesystem. Now, things are getting cleaner and I have started porting the patches against the first MacOS X 10.5 version, and most of the patches are already appliable against that version (with the exception of one patch). The package has no bugs in its current version, has no lintian warnings/errors (when using a new lintian version) and is packaged with format 3.0 (quilt). In other words, it is in a mostly sane situation, but as is a tautology, things can be improved. There are some things to do and I would kindly appreciate some help with the forward porting the patches. The package long description: , | The HFS+ file system used by Apple Computer for their Mac OS is | supported by the Linux kernel. Since this will be your first experience with Linux, installing on an OldWorld PowerPC won't be as easy, but still quite doable and, in fact, a way to rescue such machines, as Apple doesn't seem to care about them. The HCL at http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/Apple doesn't list the 8500 - the oldest machines on it seem to be G3s. So what's the best version of Debian to install? Others may suggest you to boot into MacOS (the classic version, not MacOS X), use BootX and then load Linux. It seems that a version of MacOS 7.x can be downloaded legally somewhere from Apple's site (please, if you go that route, it would be a good thing if you posted the link here to the list). OTOH, I prefer to use something that doesn't require another OS to run Linux. In that situation, I would use either a boot floppy made with a tool called miboot or boot using quik (which is, in some ways, similar to using LILO). Unfortunately, the OldWorld machines have some problems with their bios (actually called Open Firmware) and they don't always show you what is going on if you activate it (pressing the combination Command + Option + O + F right after the chime when the machine is turned on). Unfortunately #2, for legal purposes, it is not allowed to distribute bootable CDs for OldWorld machines (like yours), which is, essentially, what makes this a patience exercise. If it were not for that, then installing Linux on your powermac would be as easy as on PCs. I don't know if modern versions of Debian support installation on your machine, but you can surely install anything if you get Debian's woody version of the boot floppies, install a minimal system from there and just upgrade things to a newer release (having the world of Free Software at your fingertips). Using flash/video on non-mainstream arches and youtube-dl (was: Re: view flash website)
Hi. I'm including -mentors on this reply, since some may be interested in the newer packages that I offer. Please, keep the CC'ies. On Sep 03 2009, the grv wrote: And, for your consideration, every three days i want to visit You tube, Vimeo website, myspace, and so on web services that use a flash tecnology. Many people use this services, every day. Are you using Flash for the video player part? If so, then you might want to check some alternatives. (Here begins the part that may be of interest to -mentors) For instance, youtube-dl (present in the unstable part of our repository) is a handy tool to download the files and it is frequently updated. I have newer version of youtube-dl at http://rb.doesntexist.org/debian/ that may be more interesting for anybody using it (it is signed with my cryptographic key), and you can get the sources at: dget http://rb.doesntexist.org/debian/youtube-dl_2009.08.08-1~try01.dsc I frequently use it with aria2c, so that I can download the videos faster (and, actually, it is a good thing to follow, say, some courses from universities). (Here ends the part of interest to debian-mentors). If you just trust me (you shouldn't, since you don't know me), you can get a ready-made package from: http://rb.doesntexist.org/debian/youtube-dl_2009.08.08-1~try01_all.deb After you get the videos, you can play them with vlc, mplayer, xine, totem, whatever. The package clive is another alternative to grab videos from all over the place. You may want to check the mozilla/firefox plugin for mplayer so that you can play your videos in place. All this is available for powerpc too (I use it, and I'm interested in the platform, as I have some very old powerpc boxes that are still going strong). If you are not using a flash player for videos, then using swfdec or gnash may be an alternative (I'm not sure, since I don't use those). The lack of flash for those alternative views is actually a plus, since my computer doesn't get slower when I visit one site or another that happens to have 100 ads all flying in just one page of my browser and taking over my CPU from me. I prefer to *not* use the flash plugin, even for platforms where Adobe offers one (like amd64), as a way to keep my computer free of non-free software. Anyway, you right. I need to shutdown my debian, when i MUST to visit flash websites. I'm not exactly sure what you mean here. Which of the uses above is not covered by your needs? If you have anything that is not covered here, then you might want to talk with the swfdec and with the gnash developers. Free software is shaped by your views, if you participate. If you don't, then your problems will probably not be addressed the way that you prefer and the programs won't work your way. Thank you. GRV I'm not sure about others, but I prefer not to talk to a person whose name I can't really see. I have already read all the arguments (a name is just a label etc), but I like to talk to a human. Just how different is the 'Official CD/DVD images of the stable release' http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/#stable from Ubuntu? Mathematically speaking, they are different. :-) You might want to check the testing release, perhaps, if you need newer packages. Or, if you want a middle ground between stable and testing, you may want to check debian-volatile and debian-backports. Does it use GNOME? How hard is it to set up the internet (if I get that going, I can strikebug/strike ask you about anything else)? What is set up the internet? If you need a simple DHCP client, this is quite easy and I'd think that the default user installation would give you something like dhcp 3. Otherwise, the files that Debian uses are the same that Ubuntu uses: just look at /etc/network/interfaces, for instance. Regarding, what desktop environment gets installed, the first CD determines what gets installed. The default is GNOME, but, of course, you can change that. As a side note, to get support about things that are not specifically PowerPC, you might want to check debian-user, instead of debian-powerpc. This way, you will get a good amount more of people reading your posts and answering them. If, OTOH, you need PowerPC-specific things, this is the right mailing list to check. But, do you really need a whole DVD (or CD, for that matter) for the installation? If you can have an Internet connection on the powerbook, you might want to grab the netinstall CD images, instead. That way, you only get what you need and you help save some of the mirrors' bandwidth. I have my /home mounted on a separate partition. Can I easily remount it under Debian? Re: Proper partitioning
On Aug 19 2009, Jason Hsu wrote: What are the appropriate partitions for using Debian on a PowerPC? What powerpc do you have in mind? The partitioning scheme differs regarding the bootloader that you are using. If you are using uBoot, then a simple partition scheme like the old PC scheme works for me. I'm not sure if there is any PowerPC that uses a partitioning scheme like EFI (or, even, if it would make sense for the platform). If you are using a Mac based on PowerPC, you would employ essentially, the route of creating: * a first partition that describes the other partions (Apple calls this the partition map); * one (plain) HFS partition where OpenFirmware (the BIOS that Macs use) can load things from---this partition is usually very small (usually just 800KB of size). * the other partitions that you would like to have (swap, root, usr, var etc). On NewWorld PPC machines, the yaboot boot code is installed in the small HFS partition (which OF is able to read from), when ybin is run. IIRC, just using the standard fdisk for Macs gives you a way to erase everything and create the first partition automatically (perhaps the i option or something similar). The rest are just regular partitions. I would be interested to know how other people are using GRUB2 with NewWorld machines, as when I tried to install it, it complained something about not knowing how to handle the graphical framebuffer and I went back to the tried and trusted yaboot route. Re: Need to wipe/erase hard drive of iBook G4
On Aug 17 2009, Stefan Monnier wrote: You'll be bette off with dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/hda, BTW since you can then check the progress via kill -USR1, Well, I really like ddrescue from the gddrescue package for this very reason. The command to use would be ddrescue /dev/urandom /dev/hda. No need to mess with sending processes signals, the complexity of changing terminals etc. Not only you see the progress, but you can use it as a sort of benchmark tool to deal with hard-drives. I do this when, say, I get a new kernel version (together with other standard versions), especially when I am dealing with platforms/drivers that are not that mainstream. BTW, what about using /dev/zero before (or instead) /dev/urandom? Of course, if the goal is privacy, then a long time will be needed with many runs of patterns being written to disk (that is, if your disk doesn't die before finishing the runs). :-) It seems that dcfldd would be useful here, but I'm not familiar with it yet. Re: Sound drivers detected on Mac Mini and G5, but not Powermac G4
Hi there. On Aug 07 2009, Ben Finney wrote: AIUI, the ‘snd-powermac’ module is deprecated [0]. Re: make-kpkg and uImage/cuImage.*
Hi, Gerhard. On Aug 4, 2009, at 12:40 PM, Gerhard Pircher wrote: Rogério Brito wrote: I was once unfamiliar with these uboot images, but one you get familiar with them, they're just another flavor of kernel images (along with vmlinux, vmlinuz, *.coff etc). Yes, there isn't much difference. The only problem I faced were initramfs uImages, which were not recognized by the kernel. initrd uImages however worked fine. Actually, one has just to be careful to feed the right kind of kernel image to the bootloader. Knowing which one is needed is half way to the success. Regarding the initramfs/initrd images, I'm not using them at the moment (yes, I do loose the flexibility of, say, mounting the filesystems via UUID, which is kind of neat if you are experimenting with using an PATA or SATA driver for your drive), but I intend to, as soon as I get my own copy of uBoot compiled and a recipe of how to create them, with all the steps described (I still intend to write a tutorial on that). Yes, I do. I have now 2 powerpc-based kuroboxes here: * a Kurobox HD (a simpler one, which is the one that I'm using); * a Kurobox HG (which has more memory, but I still didn't put it to run). I'm quite excited to have them work out of the box with Debian, with pure Free Software (and no non-free Software). Same here. Debian GNU/Linux everywhere (except for the WRT54GL router with OpenWRT). :-) I also have another PowerPC box here which is an old iBook G3 (but still a NewWorld mac), whose form factor I love and would instantly buy a more powerful machine that has all the balance between battery autonomy and the ability to play videos (these are, BTW, my most demanding applications). Well, in the mean time, I'm sticking to what I have and I'll wait for the industry to catch up with necessities. I may be getting an arm-based kurobox in the near future (and, of course, I will be interested in getting better support for it with Linux). I thought arm/armel already supports U-boot images. Thus I was a little bit disappointed when I couldn't find any reference for arm + u- boot in the kernel-package sources. I will, perhaps, get the arm-based kurobox tomorrow and investigate a little the kernel-package sources (but not much). If I can't figure out a solution soon, I will simply try to adapt the script that I sent you (perhaps, polishing it a bit, for instance, to deal with the reinstallation of a package, to be managed properly by the postinst script, a decent preinst/postrm etc). If you have already made some of these modifications, please let me know and I will integrate them. I had problems with kernel versions 2.6.26 - 2.6.30, because a lot of things were changed in the PPC MMU and DMA code. For the embedded platform that the kuroboxes use, I had some problems with the MTD devices. I still have to check what their status is and, perhaps, send one patch to the lkml (or some call to help :-)). The ones mentioned here: http://bugs.debian.org/497738 Thanks for the link! You're welcome. As far as I understand it kernel-package is designed around the old Linux ppc architecture, where every subarch (CHRP, APUS, PReP) needed their own kernel image. The powerpc architecture should allow to run one kernel image on different platforms (given that they share the same CPU type). Yes, the change in the kernel from ppc - powerpc brought some unification, but I don't know many subarch'es to speak in any authoritative way (well, far, far from it---we have some much better informed members here in the list that are knowledgeable about hardware design/issues). IMHO kernel-package should define subarchs like ppc32, ppc64, 40x, 44x, 85xx, 8xx and e200 for the powerpc architecture (like the Kconfig option for the processor type). Then the BIOS or the bootloader would just select the correct dtb or a specific cuImage file. Theoretically... Yes, that would be a good thing in principle, but the fact that we have many bootloaders just seem to make things a bit harder. For instance, we would have to teach quik, yaboot and grub2 to load appropriate kernels for ppc32 (I am not familiar with other bootloaders for OldWorld machines, like BootX or miboot etc). Also, I don't know what is the bootloader that ppc64 uses (if somebody could teach me here, I would be grateful, but as I don't have any access to this platform at all, it would be for documentation purposes). Regarding the bootloader choosing the correct dtb and kernel image, that would be fine, but wasteful for embedded systems. Perhaps generating many binary packages for different flavours, like the kernel maintainers do would be a good thing. Nice that the script I provided you is of use for you. Please, if you happen to make improvements, just send me a patch. For sure! I'll try to add cuImage support. However my bash shell scripting skills are a little bit rusty
