libuno_sal.so.3 from OOo 2.0 needed

2006-04-02 Thread Wojciech Owczarek
Hi,

I get some glibc symbol error with OOo that most probably will need a
rebuild of openoffice
(http://lists.debian.org/debian-glibc/2005/05/msg00030.html), but I
wonder if a quick dirty fix of substituting the libuno_sal.so.3 file
having that problem with a working one could save me. Can anybody share
that file from openoffice 2.0 on ppc with me? (I'm on a slow connection
now and need openoffice, so that's why this idea).

thanks,

owczi

IT WORKED ! :)

I'm on 2.3.6, too

If you use Debian, just use the up-to-date packages (2.0.1 in testing,
2.0.2 in sid), really. (Or ,if you use sarge a backport, of which I
didn't yet get around to build for powerpc, will do soon, though).

I'm not using Debian and just have no time right now to download the

The tricky thing about airport classic is that (afaik) it's not handled

With airport classic in my pb Pismo, I get dmesg output only when I
insert the airport module, and never any info from lspci. Simply try to
insert your card's driver module (if it's built as module, that is).
I'm not sure if it isn't going to need some driver patching to get the
internal slot working with any card. The airport driver is actually a
kind of a wrapper for orinoco driver, so the wrapper thing might be
your case. As I said, I'm no hw expert, but it probably works the way I

problem with apple airport card in managed mode

2006-03-26 Thread Wojciech Owczarek
Hello list,

I've posted about my issues before, but got no replies, so I'm trying
again. I run linux on my powerbook g3/firewire (Pismo), and I simply
can't get my airport (classic) card to work in managed mode.
It keeps losing the AP. When I watch iwconfig, I see it associate with
the ap, and after a while AP is seen as 44:44:44:44:44 - the default
when no AP.
Also, setting essid to 'any' makes it see the AP, but just for a
second or so, and it doesn't change the essid to an available one,
essid remains unset. I can see it associate only when I explicitly set
the essid from the list that iwlist scan shows me. Even then, and during
the rare moment when the card is associated, no application that
monitors wlan signal shows that fact (I mean panel applets in various
WMs, and such - nothing is shown). I have currently no possibility to
check it under mac os. This is not related with wep encryption.
Reported firmware version is lucent/agere 8.70. I wonder if
this is a matter of channelset for some other country - but from what I
see on a white sticker on the card, it came from Holland. I live in
Europe also, Poland.
The funniest thing is that the card works perfectly in ad-hoc
mode. I know orinoco doesn't support the short preamble mode, but when
I disable it on the AP - set it to long or auto - my airport still
doesn't work.
Do you think that trying to run it under OSX would help?
Is my firmware the latest version? Maybe it's a matter of some settings,
kernel parameters etc? Could it be a problem with my powerbook's
firmware? When I first got it it had mac os 9 installed.
Or maybe my card is simply broken? I guess it's not since the
card gets detected every time and works in ad-hoc mode.

please help, my card card the way it acts now is pretty much unusable
for me outside my home. And classic airport cards get expensive these
days.

ALSA volume level step on Powermac Screamer (AWACS)

2005-11-02 Thread Wojciech Owczarek
Hi all,

I have a question that's been on my mind since 'ever' :)
When I change the volume on my powerbook (pismo), it changes in steps of
about 7, so 0, 7, 13, 20 etc. The result is that I can't listen to any
sounds _quiet_ , the level 7 is quite loud. Is there any way to change
it? I can of course use software preamp in xmms, and features alike in
other software, but that's not e real solution.

Alsa configuration is kind of like necromancy to me...

Thanks for any help,

Problems with Airport (classic) card

2005-10-30 Thread Wojciech Owczarek
Hello there,

In some of my last posts I was just spreading the love about Pismo
Powerbook and wrote something about how perfectly the airport works with
Linux ;)

Well, today I finally got my empty airport slot filled with an Airport
card, and I have some problems with it.

I have a rtl8180-based wifi PCI card in my desktop PC, the card supports
AP mode.

Dmesg shows that my Airport card has the 8.70 firmware installed, so
it's fairly new if not the latest.

The card I've been using before the Airport is Cisco Aironet 340 series,
it worked ok in Linux with the Realtek both in ad-hoc and AP modes.
When the desktop was running windows, I could only use the ad-hoc mode,
and got used to that.

First thing - when the airport is in ad-hoc mode I cannot read the
signal levels, even when the connection is up and working.

The ad-hoc mode on Airport works okay.

When I set the rtl8180 to AP mode, there is no way I can establish a
connection with the airport. When I bring the airport's interface (eth1
in my case) up, it's up for a few seconds and then dies. In dmesg it
looks like this:

Oct 20 14:10:56 opium kernel: eth1: New link status: Connected (0001)
Oct 20 14:10:58 opium kernel: eth1: New link status: Disconnected (0002)

As you see, it dies after like about 2 seconds.
Also, during these 2 seconds there is a strange signal level shown which
seems to be above 100%.

I couldn't use my card with a dedicated AP also.

I've tried the drivers that come with the kernel, and the standalone
ones from orinoco.nongnu.org

I've tried both monitor-mode patched versions and clean ones, I still
get the same thing. No way to connect to an access point.

Can anyone point me any direction? Any special values I should set via
iwpriv/iwconfig?

Kismet works nice with my card, ad-hoc mode works great too, both with
and without WEP, but no way to work in managed mode.

In managed mode, iIwconfig shows me a correct AP address for about a
second, then it changes to 44:44:44:44:44:44 (the default one?), for
about 4 seconds, then it sees the correct AP for one second, etc, etc...

Is it a matter of firmware?

I guess Benh has quite a big knowledge about that card :)

thanks in advance for any info,

owczi

on the screen you see XFCE Desktop Environment I'm running on it.

the Pismo has already got an opinion of a cult laptop. You can stuff it
with 1GB RAM, insert pretty much any ATA-5 compatible 2.5 HDD, it has
space for an Apple Airport Wifi Card (not the Extreme one), plus one
PCMCIA slot, 2 usb 1.1 ports, 2 fireWire 400 ports, external vga and
s-video output (the s-video isn't suported by Linux). It has a bay with
removable dvd/cd-rom drive that you can swap with a second battery. On a
new battery this beauty stays alive for five hours. Imagine two
batteries. You can even upgrade it to a G4/550 CPU which would make it
better than the early G4 Titanium PowerBooks. It has been sold in two
versions - with g3/400 and g3/500 CPUs, and some range of HDD capacity.
And you can give it a combo or superdrive (dvd+cdrw)

I understand that the airport cards in the latest laptops aren't
 supported, which is a shame.

The Airport Extreme (latest laptops) indeed isn't supported well yet,
however there have been reports of a success by using it via the Mac On
Linux project. And there is some progress in an open source driver for
it.

The original airport (11MBit) works perfectly with Linux.

Some time ago I wrote to this list asking if it is possible to change
the screen resoultion on the ati rage 128, and finally after a few
replies I dropped the idea of fighting with that.

But lately I took a closer look at Michael Daenzer's old rage128
resolution scaling patch (
http://penguinppc.org/~daenzer/hacks/aty128fb-scaling.diff ) . I ported
it to 2.6 (Debian-version 2.6.11-3) and boom, it works! I can now
change resolution to others than 1024x768 on my Pismo's lcd and they're
nicely scaled. I was totally surprised.

some OF firmware patch? Low probability that this ever worked/will work. For
now I must try the Michael Daenzer's:

old Pismo's ati hacks. At least the scaling patch to try to get resolution

froze on boot (on fb init), but I'm not sure if that was that patch or
swsusp2 fault. Will do some research on it.

It's quite understandable that developers lose their interest in writing
drivers for some hardware when they move on to better hardware, still (don't
crucify me for what I'll say) sad that in mac os things 'just work' :) such
as the ati tvout thing, or 4mbit IRDA on pismo. An example of a possibly
working thing, but never usable, is the atitvout tool by Lennart Poettering
that enabled the s-video output on various ati cards, but only on x86
hardware since it used some bios calls.

And yet I'm happy cause I solved all the hardware issues on my Pismo I could,

I've got a 2.6.8 kernel so maybe I'm behind the times.

I happen to own a pismo :)

You mean external vga monitor or dualhead? From what I heard there was some
possibility to get dualhead (correct me if I'm wrong, but anyway that was
kind of legendary since there is no active development for the ati rage thing
any more). Now about the external monitor, there is a tool caled m3mirror,
you'l find it on Benjamin Herrenschmidt's page (he's the linux ppc guy):

http://penguinppc.org/~benh/m3mirror.c

Also AFAIR this little util refuses to compile on 2.6 kernels out of the box
so you have to change the source a bit, but here's a version changed by me to
compile on 2.6:

http://owczi.net/stuff/mac/m3mirror.c

All you have to do then is gcc -o m3mirror m3mirror.c

Also, you need to patch the kernel a bit with a little dirty hack to have the
tv output and/or mirroring working. If you don't do this, all you're going to
see on your pismo's external crt will be some sort of black-on-white
diagnotic output similar to these you see on Sun machines ;]
You need to find a file in your kernel source directory:
(assuming you have kernel source in /usr/src/linux)
/usr/src/linux/arch/ppc/syslib/prom_init.h

you then have to locate this line:

}

for (j=0; jprom_num_displays; j++) {

and change it to:

}

for (j=0; j1; j++) {

this is a small change related to initiating all the accessible screens, and
since a Pismo has 2 screens max (lcd + crt) it works ok, and solved the
problem for me.

So after you patch and build the kernel all you have to do is:

m3mirror crt:1 lcd:1 to have mirroring mode - both crt and lcd on
m3mirror crt:1 lcd:0 to have the cdr output only (like a projector)
m3mirror crt:0 lcd:1 to get to normal state

Greetings, and hope this helps,

owczi

Btw all stuf I wrote here I found on debian-powerpc list anyway, so you just
didn't do enough research :

Controlling the fan, lmsensors usage - pb g3 pismo

2005-05-27 Thread Wojciech Owczarek
Hi,

I work on a pb g3 pismo,

I have a few questions about fan behaviour in linux,

I've heard some strange opinions like I could hear the fan running on ubuntu,
but never on debian, etc. Now is there any way to change the fan behaviour on
this machine? Some tools, some patches, some particular kernel config options?
I know there are no modules like windtunnel etc. for pismo - or are there any?
Yesterday when I lifted the heyboard [after a long hot day] I felt the cpu
heatsink was terribly hot [cpuinfor reported about 60deg. Celsius - or 140F],
and still no fan running.

Another thing is, can you use lmsensors with g3 pismo?

thanks for your answers,

To all PB Pismo (G3 Firewire) users

2005-05-24 Thread Wojciech Owczarek
Hello everyone,

I have a few questions to all the pismo users out there:
- what kernels do you use? [patches, configs, etc]
- does your pbook allow you to watch dvds smoothly? [i have a standard 400mhz
one, 6gb hdd,192mb ram, standard cd/dvd drive, and the dvds are choppy!] - when
watching dvix i get cpu load at about 50-60%, but when watching dvds it's up to
the max, and I somehow feel it can be the cd drive's fault,
- how long does it take to boot linux on your boxes (from poweron to display
manager logon screen - if you use one)?
- have you ever heard the fan running in your pismos? a little fan near airport
socket - I wonder if it will ever turn on
- I get 796.67 bogomips, from cpuinfo, that's okay, right?
- did you ever manage to get the tv-out working?

Thanks in advance for all your answers, they will sure clear up some of my
doubts.

 Hi !
I am having the doubt on getting the monitor information in the absence of
 video BIOS.

Is it the problem when X won't start on cannot find video bios or something?
If so, you have to set an option in your xorg.conf/xf86config, in the device
section describing your video card, that goes:

Option UseFBDev true

at least that was the case with my r128 driver

Re: Powerbook G3 Pismo - resolution change problem

 Hi,

As far as know, the Pismo, like my G3 Powerbook Firewire running the same
card, has only one resolution; 1024x768. When you run MacOS, when you ask
it to go to a lower resolution, it just reduces your desktop space on the
screen. It never changes the resolution.

 HTH,

First, isn't (PB G3 Firewire)==(PB G3 Pismo)? Anyway, correct me if I'm wrong,
but before I removed mac os (9) from my laptop's hdd, there was some nifty
little panel applet there that allowed me to change the resolution to a lower
one, and it did in fact change it. Same thing with games on that mac. Or is
it faulty eprom in my head?

best regards,

owczi
