Re: How to upgrade 6 - 7

2012-09-16 Thread drz
Hello

Im running testing on PowerPC since, I dont know half a year after squeeze
came out... and before that it was the same after lenny and etch. Well I had a
x86 then but the point is that, things can mess up, if you upgrade to testing,
but its pretty unlikely ... but its possible. Wheezy is freezed so no new
versions are running into it, so I think its pretty safe. Though you will get
many packages-updates every other day in testing.
I wouldnt upgrade to unstable (sid) either. Though sometimes in phases where
eg a new kde or packages with many dependencies are merged from unstable to
testing its a good idea to apt-pin unstable, so you can use packages from
unstable, too.

I have not reinstalled on my Powerbook G4, I think since Lenny. So I dist-
upgraded from lenny to squeeze and then to wheezy.
I think you should try to dist-upgrade. Because you have nothing to loose. In
both cases you need to backup all your important data. If the dist-upgrade
works you dont need to reinstall your system.

What you read are mostly people who had problems with dist-upgrade, the many
people who dist-upgraded without problems wont be found on mailing-lists.
Because they didnt have problems. Thats media. There are not many success
stories to be found in them,

If you need a system that is _always_ stable I would stay with stable version.
Because sometimes in early phases of testing (after a new release) many new
packages are merged and you will have to fix some things. Sometimes in
situations you really dont need it, because eg you dont have the time.
But thats immanent with testing. Its not stable. E.g. half a year ago, I had a
problem with akonadi. That led to Kmail not working anymore, so I couldnt use
my email-program. So until I fixed it I had to use the webmailer.

But I think this was my only mojor problem in some years (?!) of testing
wheezy. When was squeeze released then? O my, time flies...

greets
Kai

 Kristen,

I would never recommend attempting a dist upgrade to unstable. I've
tried it twice in the past, and both times led to reinstalling the
from scratch. Dependencies get mixed up, and you're left with a highly
 unstable bastardized system.

Hi

Try as root in command line:
echo 5 /sys/devices/temperatures/limit_adjust

this sets the temperature levels when the fan begins (or speedens up) up by 5
degrees

I always use this and if its not a very hot summer day its OK for everyday
use.

I even tried 10 without any damages... ;)

radeon crashes with radeonfb - system locked

2010-09-14 Thread drz
Hi my dear debian-powerpc-list

Im having another problem with my ati radeon car in my powerbook g4

Graphics card:
:00:10.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility

I recently changed my yaboot.conf with an:
 append=root=/dev/mapper/hda4_crypt video=radeonfb:off
to stop using kms.

Now Im using radeonfb:
# cat /proc/fb
0 radeondrmfb
1 OFfb ATY,Jasper

But: Since then I get some system crashes, that leaves me with an unresponding
x-server. The only thing I can do is to ssh into the machine and reboot it.

maybe its the same bug as:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=576657
but many people get this error messages with an ati card, is this an upstream
bug.

 Do you need that? Why?
How do I get rid of that, I dont know how it got there???!!!

All I did was changing that append= line in yaboot.conf ...

Im just trying to get the video card working. Before I added that append
option I had problems watching videos... I had those vertical stripes in the
videos...
Now I have those crashes... and this ATY, Jasper stuff ;)

Since xorg.conf was modified to self-detecting and kms was implemented I dont
have any more idea, how to get the videocard to work properly.

Where can I change things? Which files are relevant?
Which append lines in yaboot.conf are default for this powerbook?

please help
drz

To disable kms you have to do that in
/etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf by stting options radeon modeset=0
The corresponding yaboot append should be
 append=root=/dev/mapper/hda4_crypt then.

   append=root=/dev/mapper/hda4_crypt video=radeonfb:off

AFAIK this does not switch off radeon KMS, but the _old_ radeon
framebuffer driver. The correct option is radeon.modeset=0
 (in the format driver.option).

  Now Im using radeonfb:
  # cat /proc/fb
  0 radeondrmfb
  1 OFfb ATY,Jasper

No, you're using radeondrmfb, which is the radeon KMS framebuffer driver.

 regards,

 Gerhard

OK, I changed the append line like you and Elimar advised to turn KMS on, but
i still get these Error messages:

Re: radeon crashes with radeonfb - system locked

2010-09-14 Thread drz
OK, now I fixed some things I guess:

1. yaboot.conf problem:

append=root=/dev/mapper/hda4_crypt video=radeonfb:off radeon.modeset=1

2. this output still irritates:
# cat /proc/fb
0 radeondrmfb
1 OFfb ATY,Jasper

but doesnt seem to be too much of a problem, because:

# dmesg|grep -e drm -e radeon
[ 29.236109] fb: conflicting fb hw usage radeondrmfb vs OFfb ATY,Jasper -
removing generic driver
[ 29.241882] fb0: radeondrmfb frame buffer device
[ 29.241913] [drm] Initialized radeon 2.0.0 20080528 for :00:10.0 on
minor 0
[ 63.224028] [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id

This last message [ 63.224028] seems to be a problem, because if I ssh into
the machine when it crashed, tail -f /var/log/syslog was giving many many
errors about ib and framebuffer stuff.
Example:

yaboot uuid and luks encryption

2010-09-09 Thread drz
Hi @ all

Ive got a question about yaboot.conf

I encrypted my root-partition and want to add the following line:

append=root=/dev/mapper/hda4_crypt video=radeonfb:off

to avoid video problems.

Problem is, that ybin -v doesnt work with the attached yaboot.conf.

# ybin -v
ybin: /dev/hda7: No such file or directory

Now I dont know what to put in for /dev/hda7 which is the NEWWORLD BOOTBLOCK

blkid tells me for /dev/hda7

/dev/hda7: LABEL=bootstrap TYPE=hfs

so there is no uuid for it

What can I do to avoid being stuck with a not-working yaboot?

greetz
drz

yaboot .conf:

boot = /dev/hda7
# boot = /dev/disk/by-label/bootstrap

device=/p...@f400/at...@d/d...@0:

root=/dev/mapper/hda4_crypt

Oh My, many many thanks, that was the problem

I swear I didnt change it, it was in the debian-generated yaboot.conf...

I had to remove the spaces after boot and the =

strangely it was in the debian-generated default yaboot.conf with spaces.

Sounds like it could be http://bugs.debian.org/587999 . Make sure the
DRI is enabled (not only for this but also better performance in
 general).

DRI is enabled. or isnt it...? Are DRI and the glxinfo output about direct

I was told that an option to mplayer can work against that:

 mplayer -vo xv:adaptor=1 JustAMovie.mp4
Warning :) I tried that and pressed F for fullscreen, which ended in an
unresponsive XServer!
So I had no luck with this ;) thx anyway

Unfortunately I haven't found how to set a specific adaptor as default,
or how to select the adaptor in other players. The output of xvinfo
seems to be related to this I was told. I attached mine for comparison.

Hope that helps at least as workaround, but having a real fix would be
 great.

  So long!

after update - no Keyboard in X - my workaround

2010-01-29 Thread drz
Hi there

I just updated my squeeze installation on a powerbook 4,5 and rebooted.

After reboot I couldnt login into kde because I couldnt type anything.
Keyboard function was gone.

My Workaround:
I switched to console mode via kdm menu
then I added the following to /etc/xorg.conf

Section ServerFlags
Option DontZap off
Option AutoAddDevicesoff
EndSection

Section InputDevice
Identifier Generic Keyboard
Driver kbd
Option XkbRules xorg
Option XkbModel pc105
Option XkbLayout de
Option XkbVariantnodeadkeys
Option XkbOptionslv3:lwin_switch
EndSection

After a /etc/init.d/hal restart and another /etc/init.d/kdm restart I could
login again.
Dont know if the InputDevice part is needed, after inserting the first part I
could type again (in X)

openoffice autonumbering

2009-07-28 Thread drz
Hi there

Im having the problem, that I cant turn off autonumbering in openoffice 3.1

I hate this feature, because Im working on papers that needs a special
numbering, that doesnt match any of the templates.

So if I try Extras - auto-correction - Numbering (or equivalent, german
version here) I cant turn it off. I only get a dialog with something about
special characters. I guess, thats because off the lack of sun-java on powerpc
maybe.

Can anyone reproduce this, or am I too blind to find the right switch???

cheers
drz

sun-java problem

2009-07-21 Thread drz
Hi

Im trying to install sun-java6-jre with aptitude install sun-java6-jre.
Problem is the package depends on the virtual package sun-java6-bin, which is
not in the powerpc repositories.

Google is no help. But I guess the solution is simple.

Any hints? thx in advance

Brother Printer Driver

2009-06-03 Thread drz
Hi all

Anybody got a Brother printer running? (Especially MFC-7420)

Brother provides a driver but its compiled against i386 and there are
executables (or binaries) in the package so its not possible to use the driver
on a powerpc.
They do not provide source packages (Brother Linux Driver center
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/ ).
I didnt investigate very far. But does anybody have a brother printer running?

It crashes when I capture a video. It captures as long as I dont press stop,

It also crashes if I try to open one of the captured dv-files. Although I can

1080p is not viewable here (with compiz activated, didnt try without, graphics

720p is perfect.

If anybody could test it under other clocks (say, using the different
governors/frequency scaling), it would be very informative.

Another question: is a Radeon 7500 mobility with 32MB of VRAM able to
 use compiz and similars?
I guess this will be a little too less for compiz, but I dont really know.
(my PB G4 has a radeon 9700, rv350 chip). But I have a Dell notebook with a
9000 mobility, rv250) and as I ran early versions of compiz it worked, but was
a little laggy, so I had no real fun with it slowing down the system.

If you can get your fingers on a 1,33 Ghz version, try that for more graphics
power, its a perfect machine. ;) I youre not into gaming no normal user needs
more.

Used Powerbooks are unbelievable expensive, even my 5 year old PB (ebay: over
500 € still, you get a first class used PC notebook for that amount). The used
Apple Notebooks seem to be a pretty good investment ;).

If you have access to the Windows notebook PC AND this notebook does have
internet access, then you could enable internet connection sharing on that
windows 7 notebook and connect via cable (crossed network cable?) from the

If Windows 7 doesnt allow this try knoppix (maybe in a virtual machine)

Then you would get an internet connection to the powerbook and use the network

xorg.conf powerbook g4 kde 4.2.2

2009-05-09 Thread drz
Hi there

Im really happy to have gotten a powerbook g4, was a PC user before.
And lenny works great. No installation issues. Good work!
Maybe I should add that I encryted the whole system with the installer.

1. I havent worked on getting the wireless to go. Any Links to HOWTOs are
welcome.

2. Does anybody have a working xorg.conf for a powerbook g4 with ati 9700
(rv350)?

I cant enable Desktop effects on kde 4.2.2 :( If I enable effects the xserver
freezes and so I cant even get into the console by alt-ctrl-f1. Turning the
computer off is the only solution.

Direct Rendering worked out of the box, but I dont really know how to get
compositing to work.

I also have a problem with the colours in kde. Some blue colours like the
default K-Menu-symbol is some kind of orange :)

I just changed the driver to radeon in xorg.conf yet. Oh, and I set UseFBdev
to false after having a problem with weird fonts in tty1 when i stopped gdm.

$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

3. Is it possible to scroll or right click without an external mouse on the
touchpad?

Im thankful for every comment or links on this and the wireless installation.
