Installing Debian on a PowerPC 8500

2002-07-19 Thread Carlos de la Cruz
Hi! I have a problem installing Debian in an "Old World Mac"
Please, could you help me? :-)

How do I get the openfirmware console in my PowerPC 8500? I tried the keys
sequence alt-command-blah and It doesn't works. I only get a black screen.

When I executed "Apple system disk" it told me "OpenFirmware" ->input: ttya
output: ttya
Do I need a serial terminal for operating openfirmware?

:) Sorry for my ugly English. I will try to find some time this summer
to ''refine'' it x-DD

of different places, just write a Unix operating system.

The short answer: yes, use a serial terminal. (Modem port, 38400, 8N1)
I could be wrong on the port settings, since I haven't done this in ages.

The long answer: you don't need a serial terminal if you change the
settings of input and output. To use the internal video and an ADB
keyboard, use the following settings.

input: kbd
output: /chaos/control

The control driver is really buggy, and may sync to unusual resolutions
and frequencies unless you have patched it, which is painful.

Thanks a lot for your answer :-) but now, I have one more question...

How do I boot from those floppies and how can I make them?
I'm a PC user, and I started to play with macs recently :)

Greets :-)

How can I change those settings? I can't find any option in the apple's
system disk for doing that.

Greets and thanks a lot for your answer :-)

There is a MacOS program called "Boot Variables" that was distributed
with several of the early Linux distributions for ppc Macs that can
change about any OF setting you would be likely to need including
input, output, and boot-device.

I did a search online and found this URL:

The floppy disk solution another poster mentioned is the easiest option.
If you'll just take the time to read the manual, this stuff really is
in there. I have a handy link for you in my .sig.
