This is an issue with the way yaboot.conf is created at install. After having done some research and tried it myself, I have found that Ubuntu has the same problem as Debian. I am not sure if this issue is limited only to machines with SATA drives, but the only solution at this time seems to be to boot from a live CD, like Ubuntu Dapper, mount the root partition, edit the yaboot.conf file manually and then run 'sudo ybin -v'.
