Hi, Charles. On Aug 29 2007, Charles Plessy wrote: Le Tue, Aug 28, 2007 at 12:56:00PM -0300, Rogério Brito a écrit : Just for curiosity, which Ubuntu CD did you use? Any gusty image? The last version that works. :-) Feisty (7.04) doesn't work and the last time I checked with gutsy, it was so problematic that I changed and went with MacOS X (until I can make my USB D-Link DWL-G122 work with any kind of Linux driver) and Debian (which is where I feel at home). Under Ubuntu, the problem is the same. I unfortunately can not tell if it already happened before because the last time I used it was to partition the disk in order to install Etch. You mentioned latter that you could not use smartmontools because it was not available: well, that's partially true---include the repositories universe and multiverse into your sources.list and install the package even in a live session. I guess that the results under Linux *may* be more informative than the ones you got under Tiger. Importantly, I was able to work all day with Mac OS X Tiger, without having drive problems. (It is installed on the same drive). Ok. I tried to test the memory and found notihing. Somme applications, namely NeoOffice, Adium, iTerm and Camino crash a lot, and what they have in common is that I updated them yesterday. However, I also updated Thunderbird, and it does not crash. I guess that this may mean that you installed some applications in a defective part of the HD. Having Camino crash a lot is quite strange indeed. I am really clueless about what happened. On internet, I could read advices about recompiling the kernel with multimode option, but even if I would do this on another ppc machine, how could I install it if I can not mount the drive rw? The multimode option may only help with the PATA driver (it seems that you are using SATA on your machine---is this correct?), I guess and only if the error numbers are exactly what you are seeing (you'd have to watch it closely). Actually, you can force remounting the HD rw with: # mount -o rw,remount -n / but you can also expect it to be remounted ro with little activity. :-( I am wondering it my hard drive is dying or if it is another hardware problem... Based on this alone, I would say that your disk is dying. Quickly, backup all the data on that disk and install smartmontools. Bad luck, it is not installed on Ubuntu's live CD... I will try to use it from OS X, but I have some work to do as well... (It is a work computer) See above. Yes. I've done this a couple of times and it worked as well as a userspace tool could work (i.e., don't expect miracles). I made a miracle with an iPod and ddrescue in the past :) Heh. Sometimes, miracles *do* happen. :-) Hope this helps, Rogério Brito. -- Rogério Brito : [EMAIL PROTECTED],ime.usp}.br : GPG key 1024D/7C2CAEB8 http://www.ime.usp.br/~rbrito : http://meusite.mackenzie.com.br/rbrito Projects: algorithms.berlios.de : lame.sf.net : vrms.alioth.debian.org -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. As I suspected last week, it was something of a defective drive. :-( Is there a risk of damaging further the disk by performing a long test? There is a small possibility, but, in general, I wouldn't say an incisive yes, as the test may be aborted at the first strange noise that you hear. There is some non-backuped data on this disk, and although I can afford losing it, I would prefer not... Of course losing it is not the preferred way. Many thanks for your help, You are very welcome. I was able to install Etch using a daily build netinstall a few months ago -- everything ran beautifully. So I doubt the problem is because you have a G5. Any gusty image? It only gives me psychedelic colors when I boot boot them. Images prior to tribe-4 had a problem with the initramfs that they didn't load the ide-core module and the installation died *really* quite soon. :-( I see that you are in the NMs queue like me and one of my objectives if I actually happen to be a Debian Developer will be to get the powerpc port in shape and not let it fall behind as it has with Ubuntu (which is now a port, meaning that it doesn't receive any attention). In my very humble opinion, it is quite important to support the powerpc platform now. I say this because Apple is dropping support for all PowerPC computers that were based on any chips up to G3 with the next release of MacOS X and, thus, there is quite a lot of users that would benefit from a fine operating system that Ubuntu Linux is. But thank $DEITY that we have Debian around. Ok, enough about Ubuntu. Based on this alone, I would say that your disk is dying. Quickly, backup all the data on that disk and install smartmontools. Read the documentation on it and run a long off-line test (you can still continue working with your computer). Then, look at the results. If the drive still has some spare good sectors for reallocation, one thing that interestingly may help here is to backup the drive, write something to *all* sectors of the drive (which will cause the drive to reallocate the good sectors) and restore back the data. The UncorrectableError message may suddenly disappear for the reasons cited above. Writing just a ddrescue /dev/zero /dev/xxx, where xxx is your whole drive device would get the job done. Can anybody confirm that these errors are not saying that the drive is dying ? I'd say that your drive is dying. Bonus question : if necessary, can I plug the disk on a i386 machine and run ddrescue on it? Yes. I've done this a couple of times and it worked as well as a userspace tool could work (i.e., don't expect miracles). Hi all, I was experiencing strange desktop problems ; I did not realise that my partition had been remounted read-only because of errors. After reboot, I am unable to fsck the partition and have the following errors: Aug 27 12:08:19 localhost kernel: ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x0 Aug 27 12:08:19 localhost kernel: ata1.00: (BMDMA stat 0x0) Aug 27 12:08:19 localhost kernel: ata1.00: tag 0 cmd 0xc8 Emask 0x9 stat 0x51 err 0x40 (media error) Aug 27 12:08:19 localhost kernel: ata1: EH complete I have rebooted on an Ubuntu live CD, and after mounting the partition, I get the following error while browsing the directory tree: Aug 28 02:52:47 ubuntu kernel: [ 498.947455] ata1: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Aug 28 02:52:47 ubuntu kernel: [ 498.947461] ata1: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError } Aug 28 02:52:53 ubuntu kernel: [ 505.091286] ata1: translated ATA stat/err 0x51/40 to SCSI SK/ASC/ASCQ 0x3/11/04 I am wondering it my hard drive is dying or if it is another hardware problem... Google found me the followign bug report in which Sven Luther (CCed) experienced a similar error, in which the key sentences seem to be: The disk is ok and I finally traced this bug to some strange hardware defect. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=414580 Sven, can you tell me more about the hardware error you experienced ? Can anybody confirm that these errors are not saying that the drive is dying ? Bonus question : if necessary, can I plug the disk on a i386 machine and run ddrescue on it? The hard drive was used with a Debian Etch install with security updates.
