Package: ghostscript
Version: 8.70~dfsg-2

Ghostscript produces garbage output with the ibmpro driver.
I am running Debian Squeeze, with ghostscript version 8.70-dfsg-2.
I am using an IBM Proprinter II. To eliminate CUPS, foomatic,
etc. from suspicion, I produce the output directly myself and send
the output directly to the printer, which is attached to the
parallel port. I am using

/usr/share/ghostscript/8.70/lib/align.ps

as my input file, which ships with ghostscript. I use the following
command to produce the output:

gs -sDEVICE=ibmpro -sOutputFile=align.ibmpro -dSAFER -dNOPAUSE \
 /usr/share/ghostscript/8.70/lib/align.ps < /dev/null

I get the following output from ghostscript to the console:

GPL Ghostscript 8.70 (2009-07-31)
Copyright (C) 2009 Artifex Software, Inc. All rights reserved.
This software comes with NO WARRANTY: see the file PUBLIC for details.
Warning: the map file cidfmap was not found.
Loading NimbusSanL-Regu font from /var/lib/defoma/gs.d/dirs/fonts/n019003l.pfb..
. 2389464 1009882 5508908 4212478 1 done.
GS>

I then send the output file directly to the printer (as root) with

cp align.ibmpro /dev/lp0

(I don't normally print that way, but it eliminates the print spooler
from suspicion.)

The ouput is many pages of pure garbage; nothing is recognizable or
comprehensible. I don't know how long this has been broken, since this
is the first time I have tried to use this printer with Linux. The printer
itself works fine when I send it plain text (with carriage returns added
before each line feed).

This is a rather important driver, since there are many printers out there
which can or do emulate an IBM Proprinter. It was the standard-bearer in
the early days, along with Epson. By the way, I do have a manual for the
printer, including documentation for all the control codes, if either you
or the upstream maintainer need or want one.

Am I doing something wrong? If so, please tell me. Otherwise, please fix
this bug.

Package: foomatic-db-compressed-ppds

Dear Maintainer,
This package causes CUPS to recommend the 'ljet3' driver for
a Panasonic KX-P4450 printer (see output of
/usr/lib/cups/driver/foomatic-db-compressed-ppds list | grep 'KX-P4450'
for confirmation). This recommendation is incorrect, and results
in printing garbage.

The correct driver is 'ljetplus' (I've tested this by telling
CUPS that the printer is an HP LaserJet Plus - this produces correct
output from the printer).

Please correct the driver recommendation for this printer.

Best regards,
Dave Williams

Cupsys as installed recommends the filter 'ljet3' for use with the printer
Panasonic KX-P4450. Using this filter produces
nothing but black/grey smudges from the printer. The filter ljetplus appears to
print OK, but i had to tell cupsys it was using
a HP printer in order to get at that filter.
