Bug#554769: marked as done (Ghostscript produces garbage output with the ibmpro driver)
Your message dated Sun, 12 Feb 2012 15:48:58 + with message-id and subject line Bug#554769: fixed in foomatic-db 20120212-1 has caused the Debian Bug report #554769, regarding Ghostscript produces garbage output with the ibmpro driver to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what this message is talking about, this may indicate a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact ow...@bugs.debian.org immediately.) -- 554769: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=554769 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact ow...@bugs.debian.org with problems --- Begin Message --- Package: ghostscript Version: 8.70~dfsg-2 Ghostscript produces garbage output with the ibmpro driver. I am running Debian Squeeze, with ghostscript version 8.70-dfsg-2. I am using an IBM Proprinter II. To eliminate CUPS, foomatic, etc. from suspicion, I produce the output directly myself and send the output directly to the printer, which is attached to the parallel port. I am using /usr/share/ghostscript/8.70/lib/align.ps as my input file, which ships with ghostscript. I use the following command to produce the output: gs -sDEVICE=ibmpro -sOutputFile=align.ibmpro -dSAFER -dNOPAUSE \ /usr/share/ghostscript/8.70/lib/align.ps < /dev/null I get the following output from ghostscript to the console: GPL Ghostscript 8.70 (2009-07-31) Copyright (C) 2009 Artifex Software, Inc. All rights reserved. This software comes with NO WARRANTY: see the file PUBLIC for details. Warning: the map file cidfmap was not found. GS> I then send the output file directly to the printer (as root) with cp align.ibmpro /dev/lp0 (I don't normally print that way, but it eliminates the print spooler from suspicion.) The ouput is many pages of pure garbage; nothing is recognizable or comprehensible. I don't know how long this has been broken, since this is the first time I have tried to use this printer with Linux. The printer itself works fine when I send it plain text (with carriage returns added before each line feed). This is a rather important driver, since there are many printers out there which can or do emulate an IBM Proprinter. It was the standard-bearer in the early days, along with Epson. By the way, I do have a manual for the printer, including documentation for all the control codes, if either you or the upstream maintainer need or want one. Am I doing something wrong? If so, please tell me. Otherwise, please fix this bug. --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Source: foomatic-db Source-Version: 20120212-1 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of foomatic-db, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive: foomatic-db-compressed-ppds_20120212-1_all.deb to main/f/foomatic-db/foomatic-db-compressed-ppds_20120212-1_all.deb foomatic-db_20120212-1.debian.tar.gz to main/f/foomatic-db/foomatic-db_20120212-1.debian.tar.gz foomatic-db_20120212-1.dsc to main/f/foomatic-db/foomatic-db_20120212-1.dsc foomatic-db_20120212-1_all.deb to main/f/foomatic-db/foomatic-db_20120212-1_all.deb foomatic-db_20120212.orig.tar.gz to main/f/foomatic-db/foomatic-db_20120212.orig.tar.gz openprinting-ppds-extra_20120212-1_all.deb to main/f/foomatic-db/openprinting-ppds-extra_20120212-1_all.deb openprinting-ppds_20120212-1_all.deb to main/f/foomatic-db/openprinting-ppds_20120212-1_all.deb A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is attached. This recommendation is incorrect, and results in printing garbage. The correct driver is 'ljetplus' (I've tested this by telling CUPS that the printer is an HP LaserJet Plus - this produces correct output from the printer).
