Bug#759348: cups-browsed: May hang for 30 seconds when restarted

2014-08-26 Thread Brian Potkin
Package: cups-browsed
Version: 1.0.58-1
Severity: normal

On an up-to-date unstable version 1.0.55-1 of cups-browsed was
installed. The journalctl records are shown for three commands.
All three commands completed successfully immediately.

 systemctl restart cups-browsed.service
Aug 26 15:43:15 unstable systemd[1]: Stopping Make remote CUPS printers
available locally...

cups-browsed was updated to the present version. One noticable
difference is that the third command hangs. Resisting the temptation
to do CTL-C, it eventually completes.

2014-08-26 Thread Jim Cobley

Tks Brian

Have read Bug 758914
Message 44 says fixed the install problem but still have problem with
CUPS which he is not worried about as he has other CUPS servers he can use.
So I didn't have the fstab / mount problem but I am no further forward
with the CUPS issue which I am worried about because I cannot do a
dist-upgrade.

Bug#758864: Sudden thought about IPv6 and CUPS problem

2014-08-26 Thread Jim Cobley
I mentioned that the same problem with updating CUPS occured a few weeks
ago.
I think I have remembered that I had disabled IPv6 before the problem
and soon after I found a reference to things not working if IPv6 was
disabled.
I have a funny feeling that I then enabled IPv6 again and the next
update or dist-upgrade worked and CUPS install recovered - until it
broke again a few days ago.
Yes - IPv6 is still enabled - I haven't stopped/disabled or done
anything with it to cause the latest problem.

 cannot do a dist-upgrade.

We'll follow Didier's line of thought that this is a service problem;
some interaction between your setup and the init system.

Checking that ipv6 is operative is a matter of finding '0' in the
outputs of, for example

  cat /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/all/disable_ipv6
  cat /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/default/disable_ipv6
  cat /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/lo/disable_ipv6
  cat /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/eth0/disable_ipv6

I'd expect a mount problem to be circumvented by commenting out
everything in fstab except the disk being booted from.

Two things to try:

1. After doing the above, reboot and use journalctl to look and search
for clues. Then a dist-upgrade. Any luck?

2. Reboot and at the grub menu use 'e' to edit the menu entry. At the
end of the 'linux' line add 'init=/lib/sysvinit/init'. Press F10.
You will now boot with sysvinit as the service manager. Dist-upgrade.
   Any joy?

Regards,

Brian.

Bug#723719: ghostscript: New Upstream Version 9.10 available

2014-08-26 Thread Didier 'OdyX' Raboud
Hi,

Le lundi, 4 août 2014, 15.19:46 Jonas Smedegaard a écrit :
 9.06

Requires a SONAME bump and therefore a coordinated library transition.

After discussing this with Julien Cristau, I've done the following:

a) get the list of symbols dropped between stable and 9.06
b) verify which of these are present in .h files in the stable source
package
c) objdump -x | grep for these symbols in all binaries from all reverse
dependencies of libgs9 (aka gimp, libspectre1 and texlive-binaries) for
both unstable and stable (for partial upgrades).

Given that none of said symbols is found in any of these binaries, the
SONAME bump is not technically required.

I will therefore 9.06 as it is very soon now.

The good solution to this problem would be to (get upstream to) limit
the number of exposed symbols and ensure a stable ABI across releases.
That could be done with a Debian patch but it needs a good
understanding of which interfaces the library is really meant to expose,
and I'm nowhere near this point now.

 Plan forward

  1a) Release 9.06 to unstable
  1b) Prepare 9.14
  2) Release 9.10 to unstable when 9.06 is in testing

I think we should rather focus on making 9.09 available in jessie as
that's the latest GPL version as I understand this.

Frankly, it'd be really nice to get upstream revert this license change
which will cause headaches (or straight interdictions in some
corporations) for many people, including us as maintainers.

Any upload for Ghostscript = 9.10 should not be done before ensuring
that all reverse dependencies can live with an AGPL Ghostscript.

@Odyx: As agreed, please go ahead with testing 9.06 and when believed
working start coordinate the library transition with the release team.

I will just upload, it doesn't a transition given the checks I've done
and mentionned above.

Cheers,
OdyX

I've been thinking more about this --- would it make sense to change
the -dev package name so maintainers of reverse dependencies have to
actively check that they've done whatever's needed to make license
compliance easy for users before adopting the new version?

Thanks,
Jonathan

ghostscript would benefit from a staged build (DEB_STAGE=stage1), eliminating
the cyclic dependency with cups. This should set the dependencies right, and not
build ghostscript-cups.

Also please consider not to run the license check for stage1 builds, or maybe
disable it for arch any only builds. I did stop it after two hours waiting on a
slow platform ...

Package: ghostscript
Version: 9.05~dfsg-8.1
Severity: important

As pre-announced in
https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2013/12/msg00570.html
it is planned to remove lcms1 for jessie.

According to the changelog this is mostly done:

| * Link against lcms2 (not lcms1).
|Regenerate autoconf during build (needed for patch 1001).
|Build-depend on autoconf.
|Build-depend on liblcms1-dev (in addition to liblcms2-dev): Provides
|needed icc34.h header.

Please fix ghostscript so that liblcms1-dev can be dropped.

The severity will be bumped to RC-level before the jessie freeze.

Cheers,
Moritz
