Ok. Done now.

Seems cups-filters was fixed already at least in unstable.

I agree; thanks for leaving this open, so it can be found easier
by others encountering the same problem.

Maybe this is something that can be fixed on the etckeeper side
(ignoring those generated PPDs and the .O (IIRC?) files).

Unfortunately, this is a long-running issue with CUPS and the CUPS stack, and
is tracked by https://bugs.debian.org/549673 and https://github.com/apple/
cups/issues/3067

While I agree that the whole /etc/cups directory _COULD_ be moved to
/var/lib/cups , this is not done easily, brings only little benefit, and woudl
break a lot of assumptions in various parts of the stack. See as mere example
the search for /etc/cups/ppd ; 290 occurences:

https://codesearch.debian.net/search?q=%2Fetc%2Fcups%2Fppd

I really have not changed my mind about this: diverging away from upstream
CUPS and their 20+ years of existance is really not worth the costs.

Hereby marking this as upstream, and wontfix; sorry.

Cheers,
OdyX

Bug#926800: unblock: cups-filters/1.21.6-5

2019-04-10 Thread Didier 'OdyX' Raboud
Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: unblock

Please unblock package cups-filters 1.21.6-5

It fixes a severity: important bug (#926576) in cups-filters; which is a
regression in the ghostscript support triggered by the version of Ghostscript
that will be shipped in Buster (9.27), quoting the upstream developer
(https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=926576#20):

> The old call used the undocumented internal "pdfdict" of Ghostscript
> which from Ghostscript 9.27 on is not accessible any more for security
> reasons. Now I use the call suggested in the Arch Linux bug report using
> "runpdfbegin".

The full (noisy) debdiff is attached, but here comes the real source diff:

Bug#926789: ghostscript: unrecoverable error -> cups: no print, return "Filter failed"

2019-04-10 Thread Antonio
Package: ghostscript
Version: 9.26a~dfsg-0+deb9u1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,
the version *9.27~dfsg-1* of ghostscript packages returns an error and
cups can no longer print documents.

The printer is "*KYOCERA-FS-C2626MFP*", the driver used "*Generic PCL
6/PCL XL Printer Foomatic/hpijs-pcl5c (color, 2-sided printing)*".

The error returned (/var/log/cups/error_log) is as follows: "*GPL
Ghostscript 9.27: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1*"

As workaround I returned to version *9.26a~dfsg-0+deb9u1*:

*apt-get install ghostscript=9.26a~dfsg-0+deb9u1
ghostscript-x=9.26a~dfsg-0+deb9u1 libgs9=9.26a~dfsg-0+deb9u1
libgs9-common=9.26a~dfsg-0+deb9u1apt-mark hold ghostscript
ghostscript-x libgs9 libgs9-common*

and now I can print again.

Thank you,
Antonio

Bug#926787: "filter failed" in CUPS, error log says "Unable to determine number of pages"

2019-04-10 Thread James Van Zandt
Package: ghostscript
Version: 9.27~dfsg-1
Severity: normal

Most print jobs fail with "filter failed". Only acroreader is able to
print PDF files.

The entry in /var/log/cups/error_log is:
  D [09/Apr/2019:20:17:06 -0400] [Job 1747] GPL Ghostscript 9.27:
Unrecoverable error, exit code 1

I may not have printed between 3/31 and 4/6.

  End-Date: 2019-04-04 21:28:54

cups-filters has not been upgraded since at least 3/1.

I found these in my backups:
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 94436 Apr 9 21:00
/tmp/ghostscript_9.26a~dfsg-2_amd64.deb
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3449200 Apr 9 21:00
/tmp/ghostscript-doc_9.26a~dfsg-2_all.deb
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 90360 Apr 9 21:00

  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 26948 Apr 9 21:00
/tmp/libfile-slurp-perl_.26-1_all.deb
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2197888 Apr 9 21:00
/tmp/libgs9_9.26a~dfsg-2_amd64.deb
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5135548 Apr 9 21:00
/tmp/libgs9-common_9.26a~dfsg-2_all.deb

After downgrading to those versions, printing works again.

I conclude that the last version of Ghostscript is (at least) incompatible
with CUPS.
