Bug#873606: cups: 2.2.4 stopped being able to interact with our cups server
Hi Brian, > This bug is against cups 2.2.4-1. Perhaps I was unclear. Hi Brian, > Samuel and Julian, please take a look at #877888 and let us know if it > fixes things. I do not have a ~/.cups folder nor any lpoptions (in /etc/cups/lpoptions or somewhere else) nor any PRINTER environment variables set. Only the afore mentioned entry in /etc/cups/client.conf. So I do not see how 877888 could relate to the problem and I do not see, what I could try from the suggestions in that bug. Samuel and Julian, please take a look at #877888 and let us know if it fixes things. Regards, Brian.
Bug#873606: cups: 2.2.4 stopped being able to interact with our cups server
Hi, similar/same(?) issue here: $ lpstat -a lpstat: Dienst nicht verfügbar (translation: lpstat: Service not available) The remote print server is configured via /etc/cups/client.conf $ cat /etc/cups/client.conf ServerName hostname-of-server/version=1.1 Downgrading to the version in stable makes me see all printers again and able to print. I had read that bug, and thus removed my .cups/lpoptions file already, with the same issue. I don't think the two bugs are related. Samuel

It seems like the cups > client does not send $PRINTER to the server at all, thus "No default > printer" beign returned. I was just about to post in reply to M G Berberich's mail to #870463 when this one arrived. My suggestion was (and still is) that the ~/.cups/lpoptions be moved and the PRINTER (or LPDEST) environment variable be set instead. (M G Berberich has been CC'ed). pcl is a local print queue set to print to a file. With 'lpstat -d' I get lpstat: error - PRINTER environment variable names non-existent destination "pcl". 'lp /etc/nsswitch' gives lp: Error - scheduler not responding. Regards, Brian.

Bug#873606: cups: 2.2.4 stopped being able to interact with our cups server
Package: cups Version: 2.2.4-1 Severity: important Hello, Since the upgrade to 2.2.4-1 (more precisely, it is the upgrade of libcups2 which breaks things), I'm not able to print any more: [with 2.2.3-2] $ lpq print2me is ready no entries [with 2.2.4-1] $ lpq lpq: Error - PRINTER environment variable names non-existent destination "print2me". $ lpr /usr/bin/lpr: Error - scheduler not responding. $ lp lp: Error - scheduler not responding. but oddly enough: $ lpstat -a print2me accepting requests since mar. 29 août 2017 14:13:48 CEST Anyway, I had to downgrade to 2.2.3-2 to get printing back working. I'm using $CUPS_SERVER=cups.bordeaux.inria.fr $CUPS_USER=thibault $PRINTER=print2me The server shows: CUPS 1.6.3 Description: File d'attente Follow Me Location: Follow Me BSO Driver: TOSHIBA ColorMFP (color, 2-sided printing) Connection: lpd://193.50.111.138/secure Defaults: job-sheets=none, none media=na_letter_8.5x11in sides=two-sided-long-edge I have attached the TCP sessions of each version. It seems like the cups client does not send $PRINTER to the server at all, thus "No default printer" beign returned.
