Where OLD means that the hardware in question is older (often much older) than five years and for which a post-warranty hardware support agreement may not be available or is unreasonably expensive. Goal #1 is consolidation. The goal is to make greater use of virtual machines hosted on a smaller number of physical machines concentrated at fewer hosting providers. Goal #2 is life-cycling. The goal is to have core infrastructure no older than 5 years (ideally) and on next business day hardware support agreements so that inevitable component failures can be addressed quickly.
