Dear Harald,
Since last year, the US export restrictions have been lifted
to an extent that we can now distribute cryptography programs from
within the US (though legally, we're not supposed to let members of
the 'axis that Bush hates' download them).

The full legal details are in

non-US is still around because some maintainers haven't
updated their packages to reflect these changes in the law. If you
haven't noticed non-US/main in unstable is getting smaller and smaller
and it will eventually disappear unless:

1. The Bush administration revives those stupid unenforcable laws.
2. Debian starts to distribute programs that are illegal under the
DMCA (eg. DeCSS). Personally, I don't know what progess debian-legal
   has made with that issue.

Yours sincerely,

Hi,
There is no such thing as an official channel for Debian as
such. However, for your information, the de facto one is #debian on
irc.debian.org which happens to point to irc.freenode.org. The same
network also hosts #debian-it for Italiano speakers. But by all means,
there's no one stopping you creating a #debian channel on your
favourite network.

Dear Cypher,
First of all, please use reconfigure your mail client to use
your real name. Please note the latest release of Debian is 3.0
(code-named Woody). However, there is no guarantee that your winmodem
is supported under Debian 3.0 let alone ANY current distribution or
version of Linux. Winmodems are notoriously hard to support under
Linux due to their manufacturer's unwillingness to release information
about them to the public domain. Your best bet is to check
to see if it is possible (and how) to get
it working under Linux, or better still, buy an external serial (or
USB as long as it's not a winmoden) as they definitely work in Linux.
If you need anymore help, please send contact
(-project is not a technical support
list), or ask in #debian on
irc.debian.org.

Good luck,
Andrew "Netsnipe" Lau
