A little question

2004-12-18 Thread jalogne . raphael

I'm sorry to disturbyou, i want to ask a question i can't find the answer alone.

I've been reading the debian site for hours and i'm deeply sensitive to the
debian philosophy of distributing linux.

I'm using an old RedHat version kernel 2.4.6 and i want to update it.
I'd like to use the latest debian version but i wonder if it won't be difficult
for me to adaptate :

i've spend a long time to learn on the book bought with my RedHat package, and
now i'm used to the basic commands and the folders structure (/etc /user
/dev,...)
I wonder if it's quite the same with Debian

Sorry for this basic question, thanks

In general, Debian will use the same command-line tools as RedHat (and
almost all other Linux distributions), and will usually put things in the
same or similar places. However, the location of a lot of config files is
different in RedHat and Debian, which can trip you up occasionally. A quick
grep, find, or google will usually find the answer, and for everything else,
there's MasterCard -- sorry, mailing lists and IRC.

hi,

debian comes with a variety of window managers you can choose from, some
are very similar to windoze desktops, some are rather simple/functional
and some are extremly extensible and offer a lot of eye-candy. i am
pretty confident that you can find something that suits you.

Salut,

Robert

Short content summary in english:

- there are several wm's in debian, they look different and serve
different needs

- it is possible to install more than one wm and let the user choose
- debian can also be installed text-only (eg. for servers)
- most probrams odnt require a specific wm, so it mostly a matter
of personal preference which one to install
- most wm's on the plig.org site are avaialble in debian (CDE isn,t
for obvious reasons)
