Re: Welcome to our 2010 Debian Google Summer of Code students!
[Steve Langasek] Although it seems this isn't actually non-free software, I find your response here inappropriate because it implies developers have no right to object to a GSoC project done in Debian's name that involves non-free software. Actually, it implies that there is a time for everything, and objecting to GSoC projects should be done while the project descriptions we offer are being drafted and before they are presented to students, and while student projects are being evaluated, not after the project have presented projects to students and students have accepted them. We absolutely do - I share Josselin's position that GSoC should never be used to benefit projects depending on non-free software in Debian's name. This runs counter to the shared values that define Debian itself, and would be a misappropriation of Debian's reputation. -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Sorry but I have to object to a project that is based on non-free software. Especially when we have free and superior packages in the archive that provide similar functionality. Michael Bank just explained to me privately that the Torque license is actually more free than it used to be. And while it has very obnoxious restrictions, it sounds like something that could be accepted in main. So provided that the FTP masters give their approval to it, I will have to retract that objection. That said, I retain my stance on the technical superiority of other software (like slurm-llnl) over torque. I don’t see anything in the proposal that justifies using a software which is a bit outdated and with a blurry license per se - but if the student knows it better, it also makes sense. You are probably refering to Torque. I had some difficulties about their license but finally came to the conclusion that it is actually DFSG compatible. The respective upload is overdue, I admit. If there is something you see the need to be discussed, then feel free to do so. Torque to me is something that I feel comfortable with. It could also be Sun Grid Engine or something else. If we are successful then we have learned and documented enough to become fairly flexible with the batch system to use.
