That's unfortunate. I don't have an easy answer to that apart from perhaps to use a server host (perhaps a VM) somewhere as a relay. If you're reading Debian lists (and lists of upstreams, etc.) then that would surely fall within the DMUP - is there a suitable DSA-managed machine ? I have been reading the Debian mailing lists on the news groups gatewayed by bofh.it, operated by Marco d'Itri, through the free Eternal September news server for many years without problem. My only reservation is that I haven't been able to verify for certain that the message IDs and references headers are handled correctly by the gateway. The gateway is provided by http://news.bofh.it/. Your regular usenet provider probably already has this hierarchy. Gmane is also a great service, who also provide their own news gateway to debian lists. Let me make a more concrete offer: On request, chiark will provide reading/posting access for DDs or DMs, to the public groups chiark carries, including Debian list gateways. If you would like access to chiark's news server, please: - email newsmas...@chiark.greenend.org.uk with a signed request - stating the IPv4/IPv6 address or domain name to grant access to - stating who (besides you) has the use of that address or name I (or Matthew Vernon, my co-newsmaster) will reply notifying you that access has been granted.[1] We will also create new gateways for mailing lists (not just Debian lists) on request. You'll be in the same category as Cambridge University users: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~news/ucam.html We are also generally happy to peer: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~news/peer.html Please feel free to repeat this offer elsewhere, or reproduce it on an appropriate wiki page, or whatever. Ian. I gateway a large number of Debian lists[1] on my personal colo (which also runs a general text newsfeed and which provides service to my own users and also anyone with a University of Cambridge IP address). I would be happy to grant access to Debian Developers and longstanding contributors, but I would need a static IP address or stable domain name. I asked DSA whether it would be a good idea to grant access to every Debian system but they told me that a user using a Debian machine to read usenet would probably be in breach of the DMUP. I guess that wouldn't apply to reading chiark.mail.debian.*. I'm tempted to grant access to every machine in *.debian.net. Would that be unwise ? Ian. gmane equivalent
I've used gmane for year, to take care of most mailing list tracking. It has worked great so far, but I wasn't aware that it is run by a small group of individuals. Does Debian as a project have an NNTP service ? We have mailing lists, but do we also have NNTP service like gmane. If not, should we be having one ? -- Ritesh Raj Sarraf | http://people.debian.org/~rrs Debian - The Universal Operating System signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
