Bug#532022: libncursesw5-dbg: installs files in the wrong directory

I disagree with the severity, as explained below.

 $ dpkg -L libncursesw5-dbg
 [...]
 /usr/lib/debug/libticw.so.5.7
 /usr/lib/debug/libformw.so.5.7
 /usr/lib/debug/libpanelw.so.5.7
 /usr/lib/debug/libncursesw.so.5.7
 /usr/lib/debug/libmenuw.so.5.7
 /usr/lib/debug/libmenuw.so.5
 /usr/lib/debug/libpanelw.so.5
 /usr/lib/debug/libticw.so.5
 /usr/lib/debug/libformw.so.5
 /usr/lib/debug/libncursesw.so.5

But the shlibs are installed in /lib/, not in /; so the files
in /usr/lib/debug should be moved to /usr/lib/debug/*lib*/

No, and had the maintainer looked at the lintian warnings and errors¹, he
would not have done that. These files are not detached debugging
symbols, but rather a debug version of the library, built with different
options (which, due to a packaging mistake, causes interesting problems
like #365120²).

Otherwise dbg and other tools can't find the debug symbols, rendering the
 package completely useless.

Not really, you have to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH accordingly. Which you have
to do anyway even with the current packages, so I've reopened the bug.

My testbed git repository³ (a preliminary one until a team takes over
ncurses maintenance, #543852⁴) ships detached debugging symbols in the
libncurses5-dbg package using the --dbg-package option of dh_strip.
This is not completely ideal, I'll try to find out how to best move the
debugging symbols for libncursesw5 to libncursesw5-dbg.

Cheers,
   Sven

It definitely is a bug in the packaging, but I'm not sure how to best
resolve it. My favorite solution would be to build the regular
libraries without -DNDEBUG and use detached debugging symbols instead of
extra libraries in the -dbg packages.

Thinking over it, I changed my mind. The debug libraries are built with
trace support that is actually used by developers.

However, this is a rather radical change. Minimally obtrusive might
 be this patch:

Looks like I forgot to close this bug report some time ago, and it got fixed

You are right. I even wrote the debug-symbols-directly-in-usr-lib-debug
lintian check right after I filed the report. Had ncurses indeed be bogus
that tag would have been emitted.

Thanks for pointing that out.

I think that package kxgenerator should not be released with
 lenny because:

  * It was not released with etch, meaning that its
absence from the release most likely causes no
regressions for Debian stable users.
  * It has a low popcon value, indicating that not many
people already rely on it.
  * No other packages depend on it.
  * It is orphaned.

My suggestions is that this package should
be removed from testing, but kept in Debian for now.

If you object to this reasoning, please speak up in the next
seven days (or better yet, adopt the package and close this
 bug with your initial upload).

- Orphaned for more than 2 year now. (#428745)
- Dead usptream and kde3 stuff.

Let's removal.
