Bug#1018973: mingetty: inconsistent /dev/vcsa* permissions

2022-09-02 Thread Jakub Wilk

Package: mingetty
Version: 1.08-4

$ ls -l /dev/vcsa*
crw-rw 1 root tty 7, 128 2022-09-02 11:04 /dev/vcsa
crw--- 1 root sys 7, 129 2022-09-02 11:04 /dev/vcsa1
crw-rw 1 root tty 7, 138 2022-09-02 21:43 /dev/vcsa10
crw-rw 1 root tty 7, 139 2022-09-02 11:04 /dev/vcsa11
crw-rw 1 root tty 7, 140 2022-09-02 11:04 /dev/vcsa12
crw--- 1 root sys 7, 130 2022-09-02 11:04 /dev/vcsa2
crw-rw 1 root tty 7, 131 2022-09-02 11:04 /dev/vcsa3
...

This is a weird mixture of root:tty 660 and root:sys 600.

I believe this is caused by 204967-resetpermissions.patch. This patch
might have made sense in 1990s when login(1) was changing ownership of
/dev/vcsaN devices to the logged in user; but it doesn't serve any
purpose these days. Please drop it.

Bug#1016189: Removed package(s) from unstable

2022-09-02 Thread Debian FTP Masters
Version: 4.3.7-4+rm

Dear submitter,

as the package memtest86 has just been removed from the Debian archive
unstable we hereby close the associated bug reports. We are sorry
that we couldn't deal with your issue properly.

For details on the removal, please see https://bugs.debian.org/1016189

The version of this package that was in Debian prior to this removal
can still be found using http://snapshot.debian.org/.

Please note that the changes have been done on the master archive and
will not propagate to any mirrors until the next dinstall run at the
earliest.

Bug#1016189: Removed package(s) from unstable

2022-09-02 Thread Debian FTP Masters
We believe that the bug you reported is now fixed; the following
package(s) have been removed from unstable:

 memtest86 |4.3.7-4 | source, amd64, i386

--- Reason ---
RoQA; obsolete, buggy, alternatives exist
--

Note that the package(s) have simply been removed from the tag
database and may (or may not) still be in the pool; this is not a bug.
The package(s) will be physically removed automatically when no suite
references them (and in the case of source, when no binary references
it). Please also remember that the changes have been done on the
master archive and will not propagate to any mirrors until the next
dinstall run at the earliest.

Packages are usually not removed from testing by hand. Testing tracks
unstable and will automatically remove packages which were removed
from unstable when removing them from testing causes no dependency
problems. The release team can force a removal from testing if it is
really needed, please contact them if this should be the case.

We try to close bugs which have been reported against this package
automatically. But please check all old bugs, if they were closed
correctly or should have been re-assigned to another package.

Thank you for reporting the bug, which will now be closed. If you
have further comments please address them to 1016...@bugs.debian.org.

The full log for this bug can be viewed at https://bugs.debian.org/1016189

Given memtest86 has not received any updates since 2014, one has to
ask if it is still useful. memtest86+ exists, and while it does not
see -regular- updates, it at least gets some.

Maybe we should remove memtest86 from bookworm?

Parties interested in keeping memtest86 should speak up.

Package: memtest86
Version: 4.0a-0.1
Severity: important

I had the impression that I couldn't access to configuration. I found
out that in fact, most of the time, keypresses are ignored. This
includes "c", which is supposed to bring up the configuration dialog,
Escape, Space and Ctrl+Alt+Del.

My machine is a Gateway NV5909, using an Intel Core i3 and 6 GB of RAM.
The CPU has 2 cores and hyperthreading, which shows as 4 CPUs in Linux.
memtest86 detects that fine. It gives the state of each core, either as
a turning bar, presumably showing the "CPU" is working, or as a "W",
presumably showing the "CPU" is waiting.

When "CPU 1" is working, keypresses are ignored. When only "CPU 0" is
working, keyboards work fine.
I haven't deeply investigated when each "CPU" works, but apparently
tests 1 and 3 switch between "CPU" 0 and 1 at 50%. Tests 2 and 4 and
perhaps all others use both "CPUs" all the time. It is therefore
possible to control memtest86 during at least the first half of test 1
and the first half of test 3.

This happens whether or not a USB keyboard is plugged in, on both the
laptop's keyboard and the external keyboard.

I have two identical notebooks (hp compaq nc8000), where memtest
errors out and stops with "unexpected interrupt" reproducible between
20 and 30 % of test 2.

Since it happens on two machines, I'd like to rule out a hardware issue.

Is behavior like that known from memtest86?

Please update memtest86 to the new upstream version (V6.0.0), which
checks for the DRAM rowhammer weakness. You may want to also ask

Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.96+20090725-1

After moving to grub-pc, memtest86+ does not launch. I tried patch from
bug report #539907 but it still does not launch: 'error: file not found'.

But the patch from #539907 does fix this:

Warning: update-grub_lib is deprecated use grub-mkconfig_lib instead

And also changes 'linux' to 'linux16'

A patch will be submitted shortly, that includes the fixes from #539907 and
a fix for this issue. Will report back once it's submitted.

memtest86 writes slightly garbled output when it finds an error, because
of a trivial error in the placement of strings on the screen. While I
was looking at the caus of the error, I also found what looks like a small
bug, mostly innocuous: half of the times, it prints an extra space in front
of those integer numbers that needs more space to be printed than
anticipated.

Some people (like me ;) are still using serial consoles; memtest86 has an
option to enable it (one
small change in config.h), but it's disabled by default (since it slows down
the test). It would
be nice to build (differently named, perhaps) package that includes
serial-console support. Tagged
'important' because even though it's fairly easy to configure basic components
of Debian system
(boot loader, kernel messages, login console, etc...), but standard memtest86
does not work that
way.

Exactly the same bug and patch applies to memtest86+ - I shall not report it
twice.

Regards,

M.

Hello --

The code which generates the badram= statements in memtest86 is broken;
when two addresses are combined, the mask is incorrectly computed. The
correct algorithm is:

A bit should be set in the new mask if it is set in both component masks
and the corresponding bit in the component are equal.

Which is to say:

newmask = mask1 & mask2 & ((adr1 & adr2) | (~adr1 & ~adr2));

I cannot say for certain that the current code misses bad memory
regions, but it is incorrect nonetheless.

A patch against the file patn.c fixing this bug is attached.

In addition, the patch changes the address computation for combined
addresses from using | to using &. This is not strictly necessary, but
removes the need for the new address with the new mask (which
statement is left in in case someone wants to fix the bug differently).

This bug is marked important because, although the package still does
what it's supposed to, a large part of the package (including a feature
advertised in the package description) is broken.

This bug exists in Memtest86+ as well, and I'm filing it accordingly
(it's the same bug with the same patch to fix, so if there's some way of
combining the reports, feel free).

Thanks,
Algis R.

Package: grub
Version: 0.93+cvs20031021-8

Hi,

memtest86 and memtest86+ are both meant to be booted directly like a
Linux kernel. This used to work until recently, when grub started
giving "Error 28 : Selected item cannot fit into memory" in response
to the kernel command.

Googling suggests this is some kind of problem with the ELF offset
address in the memtest binaries, but since both files boot fine from
floppy, CD and lilo, I suspect this is a grub issue.

It might be related to a BIOS problem on the systems, since I can only
reproduce this on one machine.

Greetings
Marc

Every time I upgrade memtest86 the postinst asks:

<--  snip  -->

...
Setting up memtest86 (2.8a-2) ...
You seem to have an entry for memtest86 in /etc/lilo.conf.
Run lilo now [y/N]?

It would be nice if you could change this to a debconf question so
I won't have to answer it again every time I upgrade memtest86.

Hi,

memtest should issue a shut down command to the hard disks. No access to

Bug#1018875: /var/lib/dpkg/info/fwanalog.postinst: 32: /usr/lib/fwanalog/mklangfile.fr: not found

2022-09-02 Thread Patrice Duroux
Source: fwanalog
Version: 0.6.9-9
Followup-For: Bug #1018875

Hi,

Regarding https://sources.debian.org/src/fwanalog/0.6.9-8/support/, the two
following files were removed in 0.6.9-9:

rw-r--r-- 1,439 mklangfile.fr.sh
rw-r--r-- 2,648 mklangfile.it.sh

(Note that the file rights are not consistent to the two others
mklangfile.XX.sh)

So either to restore those files or either to modify some debian/ files, at
least:

diff -r fwanalog-0.6.9/debian/postinst fwanalog-0.6.9_new/debian/postinst
24,27d23
< elif [ "$RET" = "Italian" ];then

> __Choices: English, German

Hope it helps!
