The manual build succeeded; it looks like the problems with the buildd are
due to kullervo having an old/buggy gettext installed.

Perhaps that's not needed. The msgmerge command seems to be corrupted:
In both build logs there is something like this in the configure stage:

checking for msgmerge... ./configure: line 8104: 25391 Segmentation fault
$ac_dir/$ac_word --update -q /dev/null /dev/null >/dev/null 2>&1
no

The build logs show that the gettext package is already installed in
the chroot (probably to save time, since it's a common build-depends).

You would have to ask whoever is in charge for the m68k build daemon
to update the version of gettext which is pre-installed in the chroot
used to build packages.

There was a similar issue with an xchat NMU I did:
http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.php?&pkg=xchat&ver=2.0.4-1.1&arch=m68k&stamp=1065230515&file=log&as=raw
(also on kullervo; this log lists the gettext version as 0.12.1-1)

I did a quick test on crest's unstable chroot and it looks like at least my
problem isn't reproducible there (installed version 0.12.1-6); I've asked
debian-admin to install all of xchat's build dependencies there so I can do
a manual build and be able to give a definite answer.
