*** Please type your report below this line ***
Hi,

after upgrading my system to KDE 3.2.1 the KDE panel is missing some
konq. icons. If I click on them an error arises complaining that
a Type=... block is missing in /usr/share/applnk/konqueror.desktop

The same error applies to the online help and konsole.

Best regards,

Bug#239944: KDE applications uses lynx as browser instead konqueror

2004-03-24 Thread David García Garzón
Package: konqueror
Version: 4:3.2.1-1
Severity: grave
Tags: sid
Justification: renders package unusable

After updating to 3.2, some KDE applications, like knewsticker and kmail, that
give the ability to open an address in a browser, open an xterm with lynx
instead a
konqueror window.

Maybe the configuration step is not performed well. A reconfiguration gives
the following messages:

 # dpkg-reconfigure konqueror

Understood. However, my understanding of the BTS is that it exists
because the Debian developers probably have better karma with the
upstream developers and know how to communicate effectively with them.
It's also my understanding that maintainers act as liasons between the
userbase and upstream.

http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=64163

As a tip: fill your wishlist in bugs.kde.org. KDE developers are very quick in
adding new features, but if you fill them in debian BTS, you will only make
debian mantainer's work harder, because they need to do this work for
you. ;-)

When I try to use one fo the scripts in the menu

tools|kdescript|...

I get the error-message:

"unable to get kscript runner for type shellscript/bash"

Its the same on on other Debian installations (for example with KDE
3.1.14.
The problem do _not_ occure in Knoppix 3.3 and also _not_ in other
Distributions (I habe tested, Gentoo, Mandrake 9.1).

I tried to install all KDE stuff (libraries, utilities, addons), but
the problem persistents.

Any idea, what happens?

Package: kmail
Version: 4:2.2.2-14
Severity: normal

When I use the attach-file dialog box to attach files to a message and I want
to attach files from the home directory of another user I have several
problems.

Firstly ~user doesn't work in the dialog field for specifying the directory.

Then when I enter /home/user/dir (the name of the directory containing the
files) it refuses to display it because /home/user is more 711.

This is wrong, "ls -l /home/user/dir" works fine, so entering that directory
as a directory for file attachments should also work.

Package: kscreensaver
Version: 4:2.2.2-14
Severity: minor

While the Lorenz Attractor screensaver was active (black background
with a pattern being traced) there was a flashing white start at the
bottom of the screen. The cycle time of the flashes was extremely
rapid, probably at least 10/second.

I presume this was caused by the fact that I have an icon for mozilla
on launch panel at the botoom of the screen, and my mouse was over
this icon. The icon itself is red; it's a non-KDE application.

Aside from being a cosmetic annoyance, it might conceivably cause some
screen burn-in if it kept up long enough.

Some applications that operate in the system tray and produce notifications
there, such as Noatun and Kopete. When kscreensaver is active, these
notifications
are visible through the screen saver. If kscreensaver is being used to lock the
screen, this is a security compromise -- someone could, for instance, find out
who is messaging me with Kopete by looking at my locked display (since the
message
bubble is visible even though the screen is locked).

Additionally, the menu bar at the top of the screen (if activated with
'Desktop -> Behavior -> Enable desktop menu' in the KDE Control Center) is
briefly
visible through the screen saver when the mouse is moved or a key pressed to
bring
up the password prompt.

Kate syntax highlighting currently messes up if an escaped double quote (\")
appears inside a string, erroneously terminating the string and
mis-highlighting subsequent input. A good solution is to use the same
highlighting used in the C-family language highlightings for escape sequences.
The patch below can be applied to /usr/share/apps/katepart/syntax/sml.xml
to add this functionality.

This bug has been fixed as far as I can tell in KDE 3.2, although it was
fixed in a slightly different manner than the original patch.

Apparently the "problem" is gone. Ksysv is working. I don't know why I'm=20
getting the crash message now. Go figure.

Trying to load the bill payment website of an evil credit card company
who-will-remain-nameless (until after I've destroyed them until the
fourth generation), konqueror crashes on my alpha with a SIGFPE. An
easy fix for this would be to add something like the following snippet
to the debian/rules for kdelibs:

# Enable IEEE-conformant floating point math on alphas (not the default)
ifeq (alpha-linux,$(DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE))
  CFLAGS += -mieee
endif

If for some reason you feel inclined to muck around with the actual
handling of this signal, here is the backtrace generated:

Um, most of the time I read them... :-)

I'm currently in the process of freshening sarti, and will do a massive
give-back after that is done.

Segfault caused by making a directory

Er lamont do you even read the failures you paste in? sarti is
segfaulting quite often, it probably has hardware issues... I saw other
people asking about segfaults on sarti just last night. Otherwise do
you happen to know why it would segfault on just trying to run mkdir
when it passes on all other buildds? :)

There are two problems with x-mswinurl.desktop:

1. It is placed under /usr/share/mimelnk/application/x-mswinurl.desktop
but has a MimeType of text/x-mswinurl. Well, it's arguable which one
is correct, but I'd set it together with html under text, though you
need a specific application to understand it, and there can be any
kind of data at the end. I've written a small script that parses
such a file and calls mozilla on the URL, so I'd see it more under
text, but I don't really care.

2. The encoding is written "ncoding=UTF-8" instead of "Encoding=UTF-8"
   (that's my patch ;-).

I discovered the problem in .xsession-errors:

kio (KService*): WARNING: The service/mime type config file
text/x-mswinurl.desktop
does not contain a ServiceType=...
or MimeType=... entry

Cheers, Eric

It appears this bug is still present in KDE 3.2.1 the following
themerc's don't seem to be shown anymore, although they still exist...

marble.themerc

Can someone look into this further.

This is a problem with the stricter checking that g++ 3.4 or 3.3 ( not
sure which was used, but it doesn't matter ) does on c++ code. It was
fixed upstream in KDE_3_2_BRANCH and HEAD recently. I'm attaching the
patch.

thanks

Well, this means Gnome in sarge will not be able to use the menu
generated by those menu-methods and so they must only be run when KDE is
installed, so they belong to the KDE packages.

I experimented a little with konqueror, and moved my (old) .kde away to
test. After the testing I renamed the (newly created) .kde directory
and wanted to move my old .kde back as .kde. At this time, konqueror
(the only KDE app I regularly use) did not run (I explicitly quit it
and waited for a moment). Nevertheless, the .kde-directory was always
silently recreated. Finally I killed dcop and then I was able to
rename my old .kde directory back.

It is very annoying if, after an application has been quit, its config
directory is still silently managed (recreated). It looks to me like
the windows "If the user is so stupid to delete this important file, I
put it back myself" "feature". This is ok, if the application in
question (here: konqueror) is restarted, but if I quit it I want to be
able to do system maintenance without fighting with a program about
it!

And now, I was using plain window maker, so no other KDE application
where started (at least to my knowledge, I started only konqueror from the
menu entry).

Any idea why it failed the first time? It compiled fine on every other
arch but hppa, it failed on hppa the first time due to that odd bash bug
I told you about. Also -v and -a should not affect it in a considerable
way, it just tells it to enable "verbose" and "arch" checking in
debhelper. So for it to pass fine the second time it is run seems to
indicate that the buildd itself is at fault.
