Bug#266531: kwin: Display window geometry when moving or resizing shows incorrect size

2004-08-18 Thread Olav Wölfelschneider
Package: kwin
Version: 4:3.2.2-1
Severity: minor

KDE Control Center - Desktop - Window Behaviour - Display window geometry
when moving or resizing

The size (XxY) is displayed incorrect for xterm, both values are shown
one less than the real value (e.g. 79x23 for a vanilla xterm).

This may probably be an xterm bug.
(Size is shown correctly for emacs).

Bug#266106: kdm: no keyboard and starting on wrong console

2004-08-18 Thread Martin Hans
Hi,

On Monday 16 August 2004 21:00, Adeodato Simó wrote:

  - kdm starts on the second console instead of the 7th like before the

that's because kdm uses the first available console unless told not to
do so. the kdmrc shipped by Debian points kdm to use console #7, but
your kdmrc probably doesnt. add this line to /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc:

   ServerVTs=-7

Is this new in KDM? I reconfigured my old kdmrc with kcontrol and the line
has not been added.
By the way, I think changing the Xservers config (vt7) is the smoother way
for most users.

  - most times I have no keyboard and I cannot type the user and password.
Somtimes (every third or fourth try) I have a keyboard and can login
sucessfully. I already swapped the keyboard itself. No change.

odd, but I think you're not the first who is reporting.

Is there any solution for the keyboard problems?
Until it's solved KDM keeps unusable for me.
And my current replacement (gdm) is really...

Bug#266478: KDE 3.3 is not released by upstream, and unfit for sarge

2004-08-18 Thread Alejandro Exojo
El Miércoles, 18 de Agosto de 2004 00:52, Andreas Barth escribió:
kdelibs 3.3 is not fit for inclusion into sarge. Reason: Will cause a
lot of breakage, and a heavy delay in the release plan. Also, 3.3 is
not released till now by upstream, but only betas are available.

Well, that's not completely accurate. See:

http://webcvs.kde.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/kdelibs/

At the bottom of the page, you can select the desired branch/tag. You will see
a KDE_3_3_0_RELEASE tag, and a KDE_3_3_BRANCH branch, so yes, KDE 3.3 is
released by upstream, but the official announcement is waiting for packagers.

Usually they release their tarballs first to packagers, and wait a bit until
there are enough mirrors.

Actually, this upload should never have happened.

OK, that's another point, but in my very humble opinion, a bug report, isn't
the best way for talking about that.

We all know that there are pros and cons for uploading 3.3, right? Then, if
you want 3.2 to be in Sarge, try to justify why the cons are more important
than the pros.

Again, IMVHO, the major issues with 3.2, are upstream bugs, and upstream is
not backporting their bugfixes to KDE_3_2_BRANCH, so it's not that bat idea
try to make 3.3 into sarge. It will have problems, of course, but I think
they will be less that 3.2.

If you and/or the release team wants 3.2 into Sarge, make sure that at least
somebody can help with this. (You can simply send your ssh key to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], and they will give you access to their CVS repository)

Greetings.

Bug#266553: kget: it crashes at initialization stage (signal 11).

2004-08-18 Thread Rafael Jesus Alcantara Perez
Package: kget
Version: 4:3.3.0-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

The problem raises when using an old KGET configuration file. If that
file is removed (~/.kde/share/config/kgetrc) then the program starts
fine.

2004-08-18 Thread Andreas Barth
* Alejandro Exojo ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) [040818 11:10]:
 [about kde 3.3 status]

Well, I don't mind too much whether it's released or not by upstream,
because the main issue is IMHO this:

El Miércoles, 18 de Agosto de 2004 00:52, Andreas Barth escribió:
Actually, this upload should never have happened.

OK, that's another point, but in my very humble opinion, a bug report, isn't
the best way for talking about that.

Well, this bug report was not meant for talking over it (for that,
there was a mail by Steve), but just for telling britney: Hey, don't
push this into sarge.

We all know that there are pros and cons for uploading 3.3, right? Then, if
you want 3.2 to be in Sarge, try to justify why the cons are more important
 than the pros.

Again, IMVHO, the major issues with 3.2, are upstream bugs, and upstream is

try to make 3.3 into sarge. It will have problems, of course, but I think
they will be less that 3.2.

Well, feel free to discuss with the RMs how to sort this issue out,
and if there is a way to allow 3.3 to be in sarge. However, just
uploading a new major version without even speaking with the release
team, and breaking the tiff-transition is definitly not best practice.

It's not that I prefer 3.2 in sarge - the current status is just that
3.2 is in sarge, and a mix of 3.2 and 3.3 in sarge is IMHO worse than
3.2 only. You might of course disagree to this statement.

And, as long as full 3.3 is not ready to enter sarge, there is no need
to speak about prefering 3.2. If you feel more happy with titling this
bug report prevent a mixture of 3.2 and 3.3 in sarge, feel free to
do it.

Cheers,
Andi

I've prepared a NMU for this issue. Attached you can find the full diff

impression of the actual changes.

Bug#263582: More removes

2004-08-18 Thread Alejandro Exojo
I hope you can remove other packages that are in the official kde modules, so
they are included in the other metapackages:

- juk: now in kdemultimedia
- kopete: now in kdenetwork
- kcachegrind: now in kdesdk
- kgpg: now in kdeutils
- vimpart: now in kdeaddons
- umbrello: now in kdesdk

There are other packages, like mp3kult, that maybe should be removed too,
because are orphaned.

Thanks.

Bug#266600: kopete: file conflict with konversation: /usr/share/services/irc.protocol

2004-08-18 Thread Nathaniel W. Turner
Package: kopete
Version: 4:3.3.0-1
Severity: serious

Konversation and Kopete both provide /usr/share/services/irc.protocol. Both
packages should probably use update-alternatives to manage this file. (This
is cleaner and will scale better than using a diversion, and gives the
sysadmin better control.)

I'll try to put together a patch for kopete and build a new konversation
package this evening.

Cheers,
nate

Bug#266596: typing in kdict applet doesn't work

2004-08-18 Thread Chris Vanden Berghe
Package: kdict
Version: 4:3.3.0-1
Severity: normal

Since the last upgrade, the kdict applet stopped working. Pasting in the text
area is still possible, but typing and pressing enter to look up a work doesnt
work. This renders the kdict applet completely useless for me since I cannot
make the query for the word pasted in the text area of the applet.

Kind regards,
Chris.

Bug#266625: Kmix is not aware of sound card in Sid

2004-08-18 Thread Jesse Rosenthal
Package: kmix
Version: 4:3.3.0-1

Kmix starts with an X over the systray icon and no awareness of the sound
system. I.e. when I double click the systray icon I get only an empty window
(no sliders) and an empty pull-down.

Artsd seems to be working fine, since I can get sound out of a number of
arts-only apps, and the test sound in kcontrol (as well as the kde app
sounds) work. However, I am only able to control the volume through the
console alsamixer app.

Kmix worked fine before my recent upgrade to unstable (and kde 3.3).

Bug#266633: kontact: Doesn't start

2004-08-18 Thread Ben Burton

Hi.

This is quite probably related to the kontact 3.2 / kdelibs 3.3 mix.
If so, it should not block kontact 4:3.2.3-1 from staying in sarge
(since it is expected that kdelibs 4:3.2.3-x will stay in sarge also).
Though the bug presumably came with the kdelibs upgrade (not the kontact
upgrade), so I'm not sure what BTS tag is appropriate in such a scenario.

I mean, is there a reason (apart from libgnokii2 wasting ~1Mb of

so it's not like they pull anything to be installed.

   thanks,

No there is no other reason. I just cannot imagine that these dependencies
comply with the debian policy. I quote from
http://people.debian.org/~jaldhar/make_package2.html : Use this if your
program absolutely will not run unless a particular package is present.
Furthermore is still consider wasting 1MB of disk space quite a lot. If every
package would have such a behavior this would be some 300MB. Currently I'm
compiling kdepim from deb-src to see wether there are any difficulties in
creating an kaddressbook as I have proposed before.

* Martin Hans [Wed, 18 Aug 2004 10:36:48 +0200]:
that's because kdm uses the first available console unless told not to
do so. the kdmrc shipped by Debian points kdm to use console #7, but
your kdmrc probably doesnt. add this line to /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc:

ServerVTs=-7

 Is this new in KDM?

  yes.

I reconfigured my old kdmrc with kcontrol and the line
 has not been added.
By the way, I think changing the Xservers config (vt7) is the smoother way
 for most users.

I agree, but I think upstream prefers ServerVTs.

Well, make me the second reporter.

   or third. ;-)

Oops, I missed the not in your original sentence. =P

could you please send both kdmrc's. and, would it be possible to
exchange those two kdmrc's and see if behavior depends on kdmrc or the
   machine?

Sure, I've attached them. I'll try swapping after work.

Cheers,

# Definition: the greeter is the login dialog, i.e., the part of KDM

#
# You can configure every X-display individually.
# Every display has a display name, which consists of a host name
# (which is empty for local displays specified in the Xservers file),
# a colon and a display number. Additionally, a display belongs to a
# display class (which can be ignored in most cases; the control center
# does not support this feature at all).
# Sections with display-specific settings have the formal syntax
# [X- host [: number [ _ class ]] - sub-section ]
# You can use the * wildcard for host, number and class. You may omit
# trailing components; they are assumed to be * then.
# The host part may be a domain specification like .inf.tu-dresden.de.
# From which section a setting is actually taken is determined by these
# rules:
# - an exact match takes precedence over a partial match (for the host part),
# which in turn takes precedence over a wildcard
# - precedence decreases from left to right for equally exact matches
# Example: display name myhost:0, class dpy.
# [X-myhost:0_dpy] precedes
# [X-myhost:0_*] (same as [X-myhost:0]) precedes
# [X-myhost:*_dpy] precedes
# [X-myhost:*_*] (same as [X-myhost]) precedes
# [X-*:0_dpy] precedes
# [X-*:0_*] (same as [X-*:0]) precedes
# [X-*:*_*] (same as [X-*])
# These sections do NOT match this display:
# [X-hishost], [X-myhost:0_dec], [X-*:1], [X-:*]
# If a setting is not found in any matching section, the default is used.
#
# Every comment applies to the following section or key. Note, that all

Kontact 3.2.3 works fine here on top of kdelibs 3.3.0. I'm not sure what
the problem would be unless KDE wasn't restarted after upgrading to KDE
3.3.

I restarted KDE just to make sure. No go. I have also noted that
korgac tends to crash shortly after I log in. I've attached both
tracebacks.

Bug#266742: kdelibs: ipv6-lookup problem again?

2004-08-18 Thread Felix Homann
Package: kdelibs
Version: 4:3.3.0-1
Severity: important

Some web sites take an insane amount of time to load, e.g. www.golem.de
. In the past this often has been an issue with the --with-ipv6-lookup
option in the debian/rules file, see

http://lists.debian.org/debian-kde/2002/07/msg00109.html

or

http://lists.debian.org/debian-kde/2002/10/msg00250.html .

It seems as though the kdelibs package is build with
'--with-ipv6-lookup=auto' while I think that '--with-ipv6-lookup=no'
would be better (at least for me...)

BTW, Mozilla, Opera etc. *do* load www.golem.de with reasonable speed.

Thanks,

Felix

Bug#266760: kde: kde crashes X when quitting

2004-08-18 Thread Anthony Labarre
Package: kdebase-bin
Version: 4:3.3.0-1
Severity: critical
File: kde
Justification: breaks the whole system

I've had this problem for weeks if not months, and it is very annoying. I
haven't
been able to locate _exactly_ where the problem comes from, but it happens very
often that, when I quit KDE (be it by logging out, restarting or turning off my
computer), the screen becomes black with the mouse pointer centered, and
everything freezes. I then have no choice but to power off my system manually.

The only thing I'm sure about is that the problem is somewhere in the base
packages of KDE: this bug only happens when I use KDE (I've been using gnome,
xfce4 and others to test X, but this *never* happened with others window/desktop
managers), and closing all apps before exiting makes no change.

I've rebuilt some of my packages with apt-build (never using higher levels than
-02 plus a few extra safe options) and I wondered if this had something to do
with the unstability of my system under KDE, but I don't think so; since I use
apt-get dist-upgrade on a daily basis, surely most of - if not all - those
packages have long since been replaced.

Dying to read a solution ... KDE is such a great environment with such great
apps, but this is really getting on my nerves. More and more.

Bug#266553: kget: it crashes at initialization stage (signal 11).

2004-08-18 Thread Modestas Vainius
Package: kget
Version: 4:3.3.0-1
Followup-For: Bug #266553

Hello,

In my opinion, this bug has nothing to do with the config file as
reported earlier. It seems, that the root of the bug is usage of
an uninitialized variable. Just try launching kget several times one after
another. Most likely it'll fail with the error mentioned ealier in this
report, but eventually it'll start up emitting something similar to
these non-fatal errors:

QObject::connect: Cannot connect (null)::destroyed() to
QTipManager::clientWidgetDestroyed()
QObject::disconnect: Unexpected null parameter
QObject::connect: Cannot connect (null)::destroyed() to
QTipManager::clientWidgetDestroyed()

I think, this is a right place to start tracking down the bug. I'll
continue my investiation later today.

P.S. strace provides some useful information, why kget gets signal 11.
Actually, a child process spawned by kget segfaults.

I've had this problem for weeks if not months, and it is very annoying. I
haven't been able to locate _exactly_ where the problem comes from, but
it happens very often that, when I quit KDE (be it by logging out,
restarting or turning off my computer), the screen becomes black with the
mouse pointer centered, and everything freezes. I then have no choice but
to power off my system manually.

Do you have any access to another computer so you could try using ssh to
connect to the system after X has frozen? I know this isn't a solution, as
once X dies, it is usually not possible to get the display back, but it
would tell us if it is just X crashing or if the kernel is crashing too.

Bug#266633: kontact: Doesn't start

  Hi.

This is quite probably related to the kontact 3.2 / kdelibs 3.3 mix.
If so, it should not block kontact 4:3.2.3-1 from staying in sarge
(since it is expected that kdelibs 4:3.2.3-x will stay in sarge also).
Though the bug presumably came with the kdelibs upgrade (not the
kontact upgrade), so I'm not sure what BTS tag is appropriate in such a
  scenario.

Kontact 3.2.3 works fine here on top of kdelibs 3.3.0. I'm not sure what
the problem would be unless KDE wasn't restarted after upgrading to KDE
 3.3.

Maybe it is the combination of kontact 3.2.3 and kmail 3.2.92+3.3.0rc1? It
seems that that is the version of kmail the OP is using based on the bugs
he reported immediately after this one.
