The problem is a file conflict with kplayer, which is not part of Debian.
You will need to remove kplayer, or get an updated package that does not
include this file, or use --force-overwrite.

retitle 265865 kdm doesn't use common modular Xsession from xfree86-common
thanks

Hi

KDM doesn't call /etc/X11/Xsession after doing kdm specific
stuff. This leads to substle breakage, because kdm's Xsession
does mostly the same stuff (loading ~/.Xresources and invoking
~/.Xsession for example) as xfree86-commons (but
/etc/X11/Xsession.options has no effect obviously).

KDM should really invoke /etc/X11/Xsession, I verified this
to work:

--- /tmp/kdmrc  2004-09-08 23:57:00.0 +0200
+++ /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc 2004-09-08 23:50:47.0 +0200
@@ -16,7 +16,7 @@
 AutoReLogin=false
 ClientLogFile=.xsession-errors-%s
 Reset=/etc/kde3/kdm/Xreset
-Session=/etc/kde3/kdm/Xsession
+Session=/etc/X11/Xsession
 Setup=/etc/kde3/kdm/Xsetup
 Startup=/etc/kde3/kdm/Xstartup

Sourcing ~/.*profile could be integrated in the default
Xsession.d/ provided by xfree86-common, I'm doing this in my
~/.xsession for ages but probably everybody wants this done
anyway. Considering that the breaks with tcsh bugs might be
related to exactly this part of the script, maybe it's trying to
be a bit too clever here. Thus there should be a Xsession.option
setting to turn it off.

Further KDMs Xsession tries to start xterm on failsafe, which is
wrong, it should start x-terminal-emulator. This is done right
by the xfree86-common Xsession script.

What it boils down to:
- using xfree86-common Xsession releaves you of some work.
- if you really want additional functionality, you can still do
  it (before calling the other Xsession or by getting it added
  to xfree86-common as a Xsession.d/* script).

kmail and newimap4

2004-09-08 Thread Josh Gilbert
So at http://lists.debian.org/debian-qt-kde/2004/08/msg00769.html I found a
message explaining that you need to install kdepim-kio-plugins to get imap
with kmail. The reason was that some users might want to use kmail to browse
local mboxes. I put the message I found at the bottom of this, it appears to
be the current last word.

I disagree extremely strongly with the idea that imap should be independent of
kmail. My use case, a very common one I should think, is that I ran apt-get
dist-upgrade (I run unstable) and kmail broke! I didn't install any pim
package, I needed kmail, I installed kmail. I got an error message when I
tried to access an existing imap account, could not start process for
newimap. My response was to apt-cache search for imap. Failed. I now know
that I could have apt-cache searched for newimap and found
kdepim-kio-plugins. Silly me, I thought that newimap should parse to two
tokens, new imap.

Now, suppose that I was a user who didn't have root and my admin just apt-get
upgrad'ed me. I would lose functionality and have no idea why and little
recourse. Furthermore, I think that imap support should always come with
kmail, as the commands are in the program. It is incredibly frustrating to
have commands in the program which don't work. I think that this far
outweighs the cost of having to download imap support. The default
installation should not lead to a broken program!

Thank you,
Josh Gilbert.

 Kmail starts ok, but when it tries to check the IMAP server, it shows an
 error msg with text could not start process for newimap.

   please install the recommended kdepim-kio-plugins package.

   p.s.: Daniel, can you provide a rationale for kde{pim,base}-kio-plugins
   being only recommended and not depended on?

I think I was being generous by making them recommended since it
actually appears to fit the definition of Suggests best: installing
this one [kmail] without them [kde*-kio-plugins] is perfectly
reasonable in the common case of getting mail from a local mbox file.
And I certainly don't want it to be absolutely impossible to install
kmail without kde{pim,base}-kio-plugins also being installed.

Maybe I could add a blurb to the kmail description, though, that
explains To get mail from an IMAP server using kmail, you need to
install kdepim-kio-plugins, and to get mail from a POP server, you
need to install kdebase-kio-plugins.

I'm using kmail for fetching only POP3 accounts. Why should we have to install
additional packages? This is bad for the mirrors, for the archive, for the

No, it didn't broke, it's just that you are missing some functionality.

You are signing your message. Should kmail depend on gnupg? Or spamassassin?

 newimap. My response was to apt-cache search for imap. Failed. I now know

apt-cache show kmail | grep Recommends

Sincerely, this admin isn't doing what he should. Debian packages have
relations. One is Depends, and other are Recommends and Suggests. If it's
absolutely necessary for package A to have installed package B, then this is
a dependency. If package C is not absolutely necessary for running A, but
most users will find it useful, thats a recommendation.

At least, that is what I understand reading the Debian Policy:
