Bug#238770: In /etc/kde3/kdm/Xservers no -dpi Option is set

 I experienced the same problem again after updating to KDE 3.4 on
 testing. It turned out that a change in the syntax of the kdmrc file was
 the cause: /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc now directly specifies the X server
 parameters, rather than using the Xservers file to look them up. The
 default there is, again, to use no dpi setting (which I find problematic
 since figuring out the correct DisplaySize setting in xorg.conf is much
 harder for a newbie). Changing ServerArgsLocal to

Well, do you think figuring out the correct dpi value for ServerArgsLocal is
easier for a newbie than adding

DisplaySize 284 213 # width and height in mm of the display

to the Monitor section? And anyone asking what I mean with 'correct dpi'
value has already proven that I'm right ;)

Note: Both DisplaySize or -dpi settings is only necessary if the gfx
driver and monitor can't exchange the DisplaySize information automaticly.
[Works here already in correctly in 2/3 of the used hardware . Hopefully
more with next xorg release.

 ServerArgsLocal=-nolisten tcp -dpi 100

That's is almost always wrong ;) Are you sure that your monitor has
100 dpi?

If your fonts are too small _and_ dpi is right. the right thing is to
use bigger fonts that to fake dpi value. Remember dpi == dot per inch
and what an inch and a dot is, is well defined. I really prefer that
A4 or letter printout have exactly the same size as the paper.

 solved the problem for me.

It's wrong. DisplaySize is the right thing (tm).

I vote for wontfix

 Correct me if I'm wrong, but these packages depend on kdelibs, and thus as
 during the gcc-4.0 transition, shouldn't need to have their libs renamed.
 They have to be rebuilt to find the new kdelibs4c2a anyway.

correct. these should not be changed.

 Note that I only glanced at the list provided to spot KDE-based packages; I
 did not perform a thorough survey, so there may be others in this category.

 It might be good to send follow-up notes to the bugs filed against these
 packages clarifying the situation, just so that maintainers don't make
 unnecessary changes.

Will do, forwarding this message as well.

Bug#339386: SIGSEGV in many KDE applications, possibly related to libqt3-mt

2005-11-15 Thread Ferenczi Viktor
Package: libqt3-mt
Version: 3:3.3.5-1
Severity: important

Starting KlineakConfig crashes.
Turning off VisualBoyAdvance plugin in KDevelop3 crashes.
Konqueror can crash after any operation.
Other KDE apps based on Qt crashes frequently.

I tested Debian stable and unstable.
I installed the whole Debian system two times.
I've tried multiple kernels and libc versions.

My findings:

The bug always causes SIGSEGV in libc, when libc function called
from a Qt3 class handling linked lists or similar dynamically sized data
structures. For example: QGList, array of QStrings, QValueList, etc.

Many other bug reports relates to this very annoying bug.
Affects virtually all GUI based KDE applications.

The bug is not affected by choosing between normal and SMP kernel.
The bug is not affected by choosing normal i386 or i686 optimized libc.
The bug occours on Debian stable and unstable distributions.

Bug#339357: libqt4-dev: a simple test

2005-11-15 Thread Artur Wiebe
Package: libqt4-dev
Version: 4.0.1-2
Followup-For: Bug #339357

Hi,

No, I could not find anything. I've just played around with this: A
QTreeWidget with setContextMenuPolicy(Qt::CustomContextMenu) and the signal
customContextMenuRequested(const QPoint) connected to a my_slot(const
QPoint) which looks like

void myView::my_slot(const QPoint pos)
{
QMenu popup(this);

popup.addAction(test 1);
popup.addAction(test 2);
popup.addAction(test 3);

//QAction* retval = popup.exec(m_tw-mapToGlobal(pos));
QAction* retval = popup.exec(QCursor::pos());
qDebug()  retval;
}

This works. The commented out version does not. It opens a popup but
clicking left outside the menu returns not 0.

Artur
