After that, I have started my KDE session from gdm as always and... it's impossible to work! I can't read any menu option, text in buttons, konsole was empty (I can see any letter), etc. Only floating messages in the task bar can be seen. I have started GNOME and at least I can work. When starting any KDE app from GNOME it happens the same (I started Kasablanca and the KDE fonts viewer). Bug#399016: kaddressbook: Data loss, involving strange file duplication and locking problems
Package: kaddressbook Version: 4:3.5.5.dfsg.1-1 Severity: grave -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 I have noticed this behavior for some time, since back in KDE 3.4.x at least, but this is the last straw, so I'm filing a bug. A week or so ago I entered a few new contacts into my KDE address book. When I went to look up the contacts' e-mail addresses just now, my search in KABC found nothing. I opened a shell and found this: $ cd .kde/share/apps/kabc/ $ ll total 504K drwx-- 2 first first 4.0K 2006-11-16 05:15 lock drwx-- 2 first first 4.0K 2005-12-19 18:58 logos drwx-- 2 first first 4.0K 2005-12-19 18:58 photos drwx-- 2 first first 4.0K 2005-12-19 18:58 sounds - -rwx-- 1 first first 41K 2006-11-16 05:15 std.vcf - -rwx-- 1 first first 41K 2006-11-16 05:15 std.vcf__0 - -rw-r--r-- 1 first first 41K 2006-11-16 05:15 std.vcf__1 - -rw-r--r-- 1 first first 41K 2006-11-16 05:15 std.vcf__2 - -rwx-- 1 first first0 2006-11-09 03:03 std.vcf2WPY5b.new - -rw-r--r-- 1 first first 41K 2006-11-16 05:15 std.vcf__3 - -rw-r--r-- 1 first first 41K 2006-11-16 05:15 std.vcf__4 - -rw-r--r-- 1 first first 41K 2006-11-16 05:15 std.vcf__5 - -rw-r--r-- 1 first first 42K 2006-11-16 05:15 std.vcf__6 - -rw-r--r-- 1 first first 42K 2006-11-16 05:15 std.vcf__7 - -rw-r--r-- 1 first first 42K 2006-11-16 05:15 std.vcf__8 - -rw-r--r-- 1 first first 41K 2006-11-16 05:15 std.vcf__9 - -rwx-- 1 first first0 2006-11-13 02:55 std.vcfVRcdrb.new $ ll lock total 8.0K - -rw-r--r-- 1 first first 11 2006-11-09 03:03 _home_first_.kde_share_apps_kabc_std.vcfMuo9TRh0 - -rw-r--r-- 1 first first 10 2006-11-13 02:55 _home_first_.kde_share_apps_kabc_std.vcfSj652hp5 $ rgrep lash . ../std.vcf__6:EMAIL:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ../std.vcf__7:EMAIL:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ../std.vcf__8:EMAIL:[EMAIL PROTECTED] As you can see, there are many duplicates of the std.vcf file, and two lock files. The dates on the lock files don't match the date on the current std.vcf file. There are two old std.vcf...new files that are empty. There are three std.vcf__# files that are larger than the rest, and inside those three files are the contacts that I entered that are now missing in std.vcf. Thankfully, I can copy one of those three files over the std.vcf file and regain those contacts. But what in the world is going on here? I'm rating this as grave because I consider it a data-loss bug. Most users won't have any idea how to dig for the vcf files, and even if they do, there's no guarantee that the missing data will be there. And even worse, if this went unnoticed for a while, you could end up with a branching scenario where some files had some contacts, and other files had other contacts, and somehow you'd have to merge them back together into a single file to get them all back. Worst of all, this makes the KDE address book system (which is used by Kontact/KMail/etc) completely unreliable and untrustworthy. I hope Etch isn't released with this bug. Please let me know how I can help debug this. - -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (900, 'testing'), (800, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-2-k7 Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages kaddressbook depends on: ii kdelibs4c2a4:3.5.5a.dfsg.1-3 core libraries and binaries for al ii libacl12.2.41-1 Access control list shared library ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.17-1 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libattr1 2.4.32-1 Extended attribute shared library ii libaudio2 1.8-2 The Network Audio System (NAS). Bug#399005: doesn't refresh kerberos credentials
Package: kscreensaver Version: 4:3.5.5-1 Severity: normal I use kerberos in my pam stack, and other screensavers in etch, like gnome-screensaver, xlock, and xscreensaver, update the kerberos credential cache when I authenticate using my kerberos password. kscreenserver does not, and I think it really should. This may be a bug in kcheckpass, but I'm not sure what exactly its scope is supposed to be. Anyway, kdebase-bin 4:3.5.5a.dfsg.1-1 would be the version in question if you want to reassign. Bug#395141: marked as done (konsole: treats some Japanese FULLWIDTH chars as HALFWIDTH)
Your message dated Thu, 16 Nov 2006 17:32:53 -0800 with message-id <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and subject line Bug#395141: fixed in kdebase 4:3.5.5a.dfsg.1-2 has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) --- Begin Message --- Package: konsole Version: 4:3.5.5a-2-cjk-wcwidth1 Severity: important Tags: l10n Some of Japanese FULLWIDTH symbol chars are treated as HALFWIDTH. Here's an example utf-8 file. http://mars.shehas.net/~tmatsuo/bts/symbols.txt These chars are shown HALFWIDTH in uxterm without an option. http://mars.shehas.net/~tmatsuo/bts/uxterm.png And uxterm has an option '-cjk_width'. When this option is set, uxterm treats these chars as FULLWIDTH. http://mars.shehas.net/~tmatsuo/bts/uxterm-cjk_width.png On the other hand, konsole treats these chars as HALFWIDTH. http://mars.shehas.net/~tmatsuo/bts/konsole.png Then I press Ctrl-l to clear the terminal, there are some garbages left. So I think that konsole treats these chars as HALFWIDTH. http://mars.shehas.net/~tmatsuo/bts/konsole-after-ctrl-l.png Additionally, Many Japanese terminal application treats them as FULLWIDTH by historical reasons. So screen is broken on such applications. This problem are discussed in KDE bug tracker, and there's a patch to solve this problem. http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41744 http://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=5646&action=view I applied the patch against the newest version of konsole, build, install it and set "KONSOLE_WCWIDTH_CJK" environment variable. Thus konsole treats these chars as FULLWIDTH. http://mars.shehas.net/~tmatsuo/bts/konsole-cjk_width.png I think this patch affects only people who set "KONSOLE_WCWIDTH_CJK" environment variable. Bug#398983: kdm: Keyboard failure in kde after autologon
Package: kdm Version: 4:3.5.5a.dfsg.1-1 Severity: minor Probably similar to another bug already reported, but this might contain some additional info. In KDE the keyboard won't work when autologon does the login while the active screen is not the KDM screen (so you're doing something on TTY1 for example). Logging in again solves the problem. Bug#397073: konsole: not reading ~/.bashrc
On Mon, Nov 13, 2006 at 03:38:34PM -0700, Bruce Sass wrote: > > Kurt, please have a look at: > http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=397073 Dear Mr. Sass, Thank you for bringing this to my attention. But I don't see why you need to contact me for this. The package is group maintained, and alot of other people should already be receiving your emails. And those people probably know alot more about this than I do. I would also like to point out that Sune works on KDE in general, and not on konsole in specific. KDE is rather big, and you can't know everything. You should also be happy that Sune does put alot of time into Debian, reading bug reports, trying to reproduce it, making suggestions on how you can solve your problem and so on. As part of the NM process I will be reviewing how he deals with bug reports. The only thing I can say is that he's working hard on making things better. You seem to be confused to what "interactive" means. Basicly the shell is interactive if you as user can type commands in it. This has nothing to do with wether the program (or shell script) that is started by the shell interacts with the user or not. In case a shell is started with the "-c" option, it's non-interactive since it will start the program, and when the program exits so will the shell. You can't type new commands in the shell after the programs exited. Anyway, you say it used to work, but it doesn't work anymore. I can see a few reasons for this: - Something in konsole changed; - Something external to konsole changed; - The way you use it has changed; - Something else? In any case it would be useful if you could describe what changed between the point it worked and the point it stopped working. Did you do a major upgrade of Debian or KDE? Do you know from what version to what version? Since this seems to be the latest version, I assume you have a recent installation, and you can probably use /var/log/dpkg.log to find the version numbers. Or you changed window manager, as you seem to mention in a later mail? And this might be a bug (or feature) of a different WM that you see. So, after looking a little, I found this code in kdelibs/kdecore/kprocess.cpp: if (d->useShell) { [...] arglist[0] = d->shell.data(); arglist[1] = (char *) "-c"; arglist[2] = shellCmd.data(); arglist[3] = 0; When I start a session, I also see a process with "bash -c " with as child a "". But I have no idea how it determises to use a shell or not, but with the case I tried it atleast seems to be using one. In your case it's probably also using bash, and that should be easy enough to find out. It's already been pointed out that starting bash with -c won't read the .bashrc, so if you want those environment variables you'll need some other way to set them. Anyway, I think you misunderstand how things are supposed to work, and the documentation probably needs to be worded better to avoid confusion. But you don't seem to be happy about that. If none of the suggestions work for you, I suggest you file a (wishlist) bug for the option you like to see. (Or change this bug to the wishlist bug.) There might also be a bug in some software, but I'm currently not conviced this is in konsole or KDE.
