The startkde script doesn't support the --help option.

I was attempting to use startkde to start a KDE session on a second X
display, and trying to find the options it supported I first looked for
a man page. When I found there was no man page available I tried
startkde --help and instead of listing the supported options the script
started KDE on the same display where GNOME was already running.

Gnome, XFCE and Debian default Xsession all support xmodmap
configuration on X session startup (fgrep -r xmodmap /etc).
But KDE does not seem to support it. It would be easy enought to check
for xmodmap existence and the load system xmodmap file and user xmodmap
file if they exist.

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

First: I don't use any display manager, I start X with the startx command.

The problem occured when I installed Gwenview, KPhotoAlbum and digiKam. At
this point I was running a KDE 3.5.5 setup and I used

apt-get install gwenview kphotoalbum digikam

This caused several other KDE packages to be updated to 3.5.9, among them
kdebase-bin, kdelibs4c2a, kdesktop etc.

Next time I started X with startx I got a black screen with a mouse pointer,
nothing else. Clicking and keystrokes didn't cause any reaction.
I first updated kwin from 3.5.5 to 3.5.9 wich didn't have any effect. After
updating ksmserver from 3.5.5 to 3.5.9 the KDE session starts again and
everything runs as normal.

I think that there is a dependency missing between ksmserver and some of the
basic KDE packages so that if those are update ksmserver gets updated too.

When closing kde session on a dual screen system, ksmserver breaks
$HOME/.kde/share/config/ksmserverrc

In restart command referring to second screen restartCommand2= it adds
a ',' after the = sign, if you remove it by hand it is added again after
finishing the session.

Due to this bug kwin do not start for display 0:1

Package: ksmserver
Version: 4:3.5.5a.dfsg.1-6etch2
Severity: important

The startscript supposed to start the kde session makes broken assumptions.
The scripts expects a local Xserver, which is false in Xterminal configurations
where the xserver is on a remote device.
Kdesession startup is slow because the script does scary things (investigationg
and configuring fonts and doing Xserver
manipulations.

Took us 3 days in a 20 user Xterminal situation to figure out, that a missing
local xserver has caused breaks and login failures.
We got rid of most of the problems after installing a xserver on the headless
hardware.

This whole script needs some overhaul.

the /usr/bin/startkde script does no longer source .sh-files in
$HOME/.kde/env, which in turn breaks package gtk-qt-engine, as GTK2_RC_FILES
is not correctly set.
Instead, $HOME/env is parsed for .sh-files, which might be undesired

When changing virtual desktops in KDE and going back to KBabel's one it
takes reasonable amount of time (a few seconds, e.g 10s) to redraw
KBabel window, during which KBabel is just frozen.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Run KBabel
2. Open a .po file
3. Switch desktop to different one
4. Go back to KBabel's desktop
Now the situation happens.

What can be related to this bug:
1. Size of .po file - the bigger, the longer time is. Not verified,
though.
2. KBabel's database - I can remember that some crashes in KBabel were
fixed after a database directory removal. I can't remember what it was
exactly.

After attaching strace to KBabel it reveals that:

Package: libcvsservice0
Version: 4:3.5.5-3
Severity: minor

libcvsservice0 is depended upon by many packages which link it in, even though
cvs functionality is not needed nor wanted. quanta is one such package.
Because libcvsservice0 depends on cvs, it must be installed as wel.

But cvs is not actually used by libcvsservice0 until it is needed, and it will
function perfectly (doing nothing) without it. In fact Quanta did complain
during startup, but only it because cervesia wasn't installed (again, I don't
need it), not because cvs wasn't.

The situation where a library is depended upon which itself recommand the
package it actually use happen many times within debian, and so can be relied
upon to be accepted by all. One example is Kerberos, an other is mysql. Both
have runtimes libs which are often installed because of some dependancy even
though neither kerberos nor mysql is installed.

please change dependancy for cvs to recommand instead of depend.

thank you.

Bug#523109: kdm: missing dependency on package desktop-base

2009-04-08 Thread Dominique Dumont
Package: kdm
Version: 4:4.2.2-2
Severity: important

Hello

kdm is unable to start if package desktop-base is not installed: kdm
complains about a missing moreblue theme file (can't say exactly
which one as the error was displayed by Xorg and there's no trace of
the error in kdm.log)

Anyway, installing desktop-base fixed the problem. So kdm should
depend on desktop-base.

HTH and thanks for packaging kde4 :-)

Bug#523094: kde4: system settings - missing administrator mode button

I installed kde4 from unstable, and the 'System settings'
is missing the administrator mode button.
 Hence I cannot configure kdm.

 The manual says:
 Note
If you are not currently logged in as a superuser, you will need to click
the Administrator Mode... Button. You will then be asked for a superuser
password. Entering a correct password will allow you to modify the settings
 of this module.

But there is no such button (see attached screenshot).

AFAIK, it is not implemented upstream yet. I think it will be in the next
mayor release (but not sure thought).

Package: kcalc
Version: 4:3.5.7-3
Severity: minor

When I calculate say 11 / 10, the display shows 1,1,
which is the correct presentation in German locale.
When I press copy, change application and paste the
number into kwrite, konsole, what ever, I get 1.1.
I feel the copied text should be localiced like the
displayed one. (One might want to make it configurable
though.)

I just moved a mail from inbox to another folder. Accidentially,
I did sort of a double click on the target folder, so kmail tried
to move the message to the folder and change to the target folders
view at the same time. KMail crashed when trying this. Call stack
attached.

Bug#523183: kpilot: Dependency on akonadi-server does not create needed resource agents

2009-04-08 Thread Jan Schumacher
Package: kpilot

Version: 4:4.2.2-1

Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Dear kpilot maintainers,

when installingt kpilot with akonadi-kde uninstalled, I cannot use
conduits, because of lacking resource agents. This is also the error
message you get by clicking on the akonadi trouble link in the config
window. Installing akonadi-kde solves this issue, since it contains
/usr/share/akonadi/*.

I assume, that kpilot should depend on akonadi-kde then, instead of the
server only. If I am not mistaken, this is probably true for all
dependencies of akonadi. At least for kpilot, the hard dependence could
actually be dropped in favour of a suggestion or recommendation: The
backup functionality of kpilot is available and working without
akonadi. (Just tested that.)

Cheers
Jan
