Bug#792085: sddm: Should re-use debconf translations from xdm for the common debconf template
Source: sddm Severity: normal Tags: l10n sddm includes a debconf template for choosing the default display manager for the system. That template is a common template with other DM packages. The package should use the translations that were provided in the past for other DM packages, such as xdm. Please find attached a tarball with all translations, grabbed from the cdm package. This po/ directory should replace the one that's currently in the package. It provides translatiosn for many languages. As I made some changes to prefer phonon-backend-null whenever libphonon-dev is installed (for buildds), I added this warning to avoid *accidental* installations of this package on the user systems. Hello, I just noticed new or modified debconf templates appearing for this package. I would like to suggest you to consider calling for debconf templates review AND translation updates when you introduce new debconf templates or modify the existing templates in a package or, if you prefer, to send a call for translations after uploading the first version that introduces new templates or templates changes. 1) Getting debconf templates reviewed -- The Debian i18n contributors have developed a set of suggestions for the writing style of debconf templates, to give them an overall consistency all around Debian. These writing style suggestions are explained in the Developers Reference. Lintian also warns about common writing style concerns. Maintainers are welcome when they ask for a review of debconf templates and/or packages descriptions on debian-l10n-engl...@lists.debian.org. It is of course not needed to wait for someone (such as me right me) proposing you such a review. In such situations (whether the review is requested by the maintainer or proposed by someone else), someone from the debian-l10n-english team will pick up the review to do, handle it, and finally send you a bug report with the suggested templates. If you want, you can ask for being CC'ed to the various discussions when the templates are reviewed. 2) Call for new translations As soon as the templates have been reviewed, you can ask Debian translators for new translations: Just go to your package's build tree and use: $ podebconf-report-po --call This will propose you a generic mail which is to be sent to debian-i...@lists.debian.org and call for new translations. This utility will mention existing translations to avoid duplicate work. It will also attach the needed material to this mail. Please also think about giving a deadline to translators. The isoquery program is not able to display the ISO 639-3 codes: TODO for Isoquery = - allow use of ISO 639-3 The reason I assume is that there's no (given the nature of the ISO 639-3 standard) translation table between ISO 639-3 and ISO 639-2 codes. So I guess the most we can do is just inject the 639-3 codes and hope for the best (i.e. hope people is going to use the best and most appropriate ISO 639-1..3 code.) That's correct about isoquery's capabilities that should be enhanced. Maybe, if possible, check that a locale exists for the said language. We can quite safely assume that, if a locale exists with a given ISO-639-3 code, then it has been carefully though by glibc maintainers (either upstream or Debian/Ubuntu maintainers). Indeed, if a translation file exists for a locale that doesn't exist, there are chances that it isn't used.particularly because users will have more problems in setting this locale in their environment. Actually, if a locale doesn't exist in the glibc, translations for that locale won't be used, so checking against /usr/share/i18n/SUPPORTED seems to be the right thing to do. I'm not sure, though, that it is really a good idea to check PO files against supported locales, for upstream translations (ie non-debconf ones) with lintian. The kdebase-workspace Debian package, which you are the maintainer of, has pending bug report(s) which include translation updates or fixes for po-debconf, namely bug number 533561 (and maybe other similar bugs). The i18n team is now hunting the very last bits of missing localization and your package went on our radar. You uploaded recently but you apparently ommitted to fix a pending l10n bug report. We really should prevent translators from translating..:-) So, sorry for this, but the radar beeped at your package and here am I with an NMU intent...:-) This isn't a real NMU intent. debconf templates and/or translation updates in the meantime. Of
course, other changes are safe.

things. It generally triggers more problems than it solves.
Also, the original template was making references to specific aspects
of the interface ('Yes' and 'No' answers) that may vary depending on

It only deserves to be of severity normal with the suggestion of documenting that the option is dangerous in the kdmrc comments. Therefore, I downgrade this bug's severity. Ripping is currently completely unfunctional in kaudiocreator.
Any attempt to rip an audio CD results in a window popping up with File or
directory does not exist /wav/Track 01.wav and then one error window per
each track being attempted to rip.
Here's my kaudiocreatorrc file...but I even tried to empty it and nothign
worked better...:). Changing the temp directory (and even disabling it) didn't
help either...

Plans for fixing, recommendations for workaround (mine was picking the file from the 3.2.2 release of kdm and replacing Xsession with it) I had hard times trying to figure out why the hell my ssh-agent did not start anymore : I'm not a Xsession thing guru and the change was pretty hard to find This change, with /etc/kde3/kdm/Xsession doing things on its own is not only likely to break the use of ssh-agent, but also breaks the use of all scripts in /etc/X11/Xsession.d which is, as far as I can figure out, a kind of common place for Debian packages to put their own Xsession things --
