Bug#525763: [libqtgui4] Latest Qt4 release seems to break things in Synaptic/perl

2009-04-26 Thread Mau
Package: libqtgui4
Version: 4.5.1-1
Severity: important

I'm not really sure if I'm reporting this issue against the right
package, but I'll do it as a starting point.

Since the last libqtgui4 upgrade (from 4.4.3-2 to 4.5.1-1), Synaptic has
begun to behave strangely when called from a KDE4 session: the
preconfiguration perl script causes a glibc detected error and dies.
This is what happens trying to install a package:

AFAICS, this happens only when using Synaptic in a KDE4 session: it
doesn't happen when installing/upgrading by using apt-get directly, or
by using Synaptic in Gnome.

Bug#524503: [kalarm] D-Bus sayMessage call failed

2009-04-17 Thread Mau
Package: kalarm
Version: 4:4.2.2-1
Severity: normal

KAlarm is unable to pronounce the messages: an error box D-Bus
sayMessage call failed appears.

AFAICS, the org.kde.KSpeech D-Bus interface doesn't provide such a
method, but only the say, sayFile and sayClipboard methods.

Thanks

Bug#460474: since tar v1.19 an error message is displayed when trying to create a new tar archive

2008-01-12 Thread Mau
Package: ark
Version: 4:3.5.8-1
Severity: important

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

since tar v1.19 an error message is displayed when trying to create a
new tar archive; please see the tar 1.19 NEWS.gz file:

[...]

* Recognition of broken archives.

When supplied an archive smaller than 512 bytes in reading mode (-x,
-t), the previous version of tar silently ignored it, exiting with
code 0. It is fixed. Tar now issues the following diagnostic message:
'This does not look like a tar archive', and exits with code 2.
[...]

This change seems to affect also -r, since a valid tar archive needs to
be opened before appending. In order to create a new archive by
right-clicking a file or directory, ark issues a

tar rvf /tmp/randomarkdir/randomfilename.tar myfile

command while no tarfile exists yet, which causes tar exit code 2 even
if the archive has been created successfully.

Downgrading tar to etch solves the issue.

Thanks

Mau

Bug#391020: kdebase-kio-plugins: media:/ broken since hal upgrade to 0.5.8.1-1

2006-10-04 Thread Mau
Package: kdebase-kio-plugins
Version: 4:3.5.4-2+b2
Severity: normal

Partition icons are not shown anymore since upgrade to hal + libhal1 +
libhal-storage1 + hal-device-manager 0.5.8.1-1 even after a complete
reboot or a logout, dbus restart and new kde session.
Reverting to version 0.5.7.1-2 fixes the issue.

It seems that kpowersave and networ-manager-kde, other packages depending
on libhal1, work fine after the hal upgrade.

Thanks

Bug#377147: kdebase: libcairo2 issue still not fixed?

2006-07-31 Thread Mau
Package: kdebase
Version: 4:3.5.4-2
Followup-For: Bug #377147

As you can see I'm running a mixed 3.5.3+3.5.4 KDE install: after
upgrade to 3.5.4-2 of some kdebase-derived binaries I'm having exactly the issue
described previously, so I preferred to downgrade some packages.

libcairo2 v1.2.0-3, antialiasing enabled and the
following ~/.qt/qtrc:

[3.3]

Bug#377147: Info received (kdebase: libcairo2 issue still not fixed?)

2006-07-31 Thread Mau
Oops... this is weird! It seems that I solved this issue just by
disabling and re-enabling font aliasing in KDE control center...

Anyway, now everything seems to work fine.

Thanks

Mau

Bug#250645: umask+environment: still problems with ksmserver-3.4.2-4

2005-11-13 Thread Mau
Package: kde
Followup-For: Bug #250645

Still sweating for the effort... I'm starting a KDE session from GDM,
found no way to change the default umask (by specifying a different
umask in ~/.bash_profile and ~/.bashrc to it I can get new files with the
expected umask from any bash console, but there is absolutely no way to
get an identical behaviour from kde's file manager, which always creates
0644 files).

Analyzing /usr/bin/startkde I noticed that it looks for *.sh scripts to
source in ~/.kde/env, /usr/env, /usr/local/env: by adding a simple
umask.sh script in my ~/.kde/env I solved my problem; this could be a way
to solve this issue: all those who are willing to have identical
behaviour in KDE as in other environments should then be able to source
their ~/.profile or ~/.bash_profile from there.

Hope it helps.

Bug#264242: libarts1: specifying an output device decreases cpu usage

2005-10-14 Thread Mau
Package: libarts1
Version: 1.3.2-4
Followup-For: Bug #264242

Probably a similar issue - when using ALSA as output sound system, when
the output device has not been manually specified, artsd idle uses about 6% cpu
time; by specifying the hw:0,0 device the cpu usage decreases dramatically
(under 1%) in the same condition.

I noticed that artsd with default setup opens many times the sound
devices:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# lsof | grep snd
artsd 26454 mau mem CHR 116,24
115317 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c
artsd 26454 mau mem CHR 116,16
115292 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
artsd 26454 mau8r CHR 116,33
5861 /dev/snd/timer
artsd 26454 mau9u CHR 116,16
115292 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
artsd 26454 mau 10r CHR 116,33
5861 /dev/snd/timer
artsd 26454 mau 11u CHR 116,24
115317 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c
artsd 26456 mau mem CHR 116,16
115292 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
artsd 26456 mau9u CHR 116,16
115292 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
artsd 26458 mau mem CHR 116,24
115317 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c
artsd 26458 mau mem CHR 116,16
115292 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
artsd 26458 mau 12u CHR 116,24
115317 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c

by specifying -D hw:0,0 the same command gives this output:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# lsof | grep snd
artsd 26489 mau mem CHR 116,24
115317 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c
artsd 26489 mau mem CHR 116,16
115292 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
artsd 26489 mau9u CHR 116,16
115292 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
artsd 26489 mau 10u CHR 116,24
115317 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c

In my setup, by selecting the OSS output, cpu usage remains very low;
when using ALSA in standard configuration I can hear many artifacts and
clicks from the SPDIF output (I have a CM8738-based sound card
with TOSLink i/o): these problems disappear completely when artsd cpu usage is
reasonable.

Bye - Maurizio
