Ralf The patches are in kdelibs_3.1.4-2.diff.gz I didn't really see the point of including them in cvs since they will for the most part need to be regenerated for each release. I think it is wrong to keep the KDE CVS and the official debian diff's out of sync. What's the point of this list and working together if everyone starts removing necessary patches to do clean builds ? Ralf For kdelibs I have: 109053 2003-10-05 18:30 01_kdelibs_branch.diff.uu 290447 2003-10-05 01:30 02_autotools_update.diff 459 2003-10-05 01:30 03_am_maintainer_mode.diff 698 2003-10-05 01:30 04_xlibs_pic.diff 993 2003-10-05 15:04 05_kstandarddirs.diff 439 2003-10-05 01:30 06_pedantic-errors.diff By the way the branch diff's are generated using diff -Nrua so they can include binary only changes like image updates so when they include binary data they need to be uuencoded. I've decided to just uuencode all the branch diffs so I won't have to verify if it contains binary data. Chris -- We're not a company, we just produce better code at less costs. Anyone else's opinions? I feel that we need to test this stuff and find any bugs in XFree86 4.3 before it goes into sarge as we won't be able to fix any bugs that get into stable. This could make 3.2 backports hard. Well, this will make packaging throw up every time. Why don't you keep a local copy for those modifications if you use XFree 4.3 until it's in unstable ? I don't like the idea of building with --enable-final on my (slow) system and then without --enable-final for everyone else (including buildds, etc). And of course where there are compile errors I'll fix the sources as I've been happily doing to date, or where it's not a simple fix (e.g., in parts of kommander where slots is used as variables throughout some files) I'll add KDE_OPTIONS=nofinal to the appropriate Makefile.ams, which other users trying to use --enable-final will find necessary anyway. Well, the thing is that we're having --enable-final in the dh-make template then. Many apps don't work with that so it's even more confusing for someone who doesn't know how to switch that option off. And, as mentioned, it is not officially supported by KDE. Therefore I'd rather like to add --enable-final as a DEB_BUILD_OPTION in the debian/rules files in the CVS modules rather than having it enabled globally. Enabling it again when HEAD gets packaged is ok with me but for now until december it doesn't make much sense to have it enabled anyway. Sure, but for the modules I maintain I'll be using --enable-final by default in debian/rules, since (i) as the maintainer I want my build environment to be the same as used by others (including buildds, etc), (ii) I have an old machine and so --enable-final makes a difference to me, and (iii) it won't break anything since when I add --enable-final I'll be patching the sources to remove any resulting errors. Moreover, I'd suggest that we use --enable-final by default across all kde*/debian/rules files, since (i) we as the maintainers of formal KDE modules will know what we're doing, (ii) we all have commit permissions and so will be able to patch any compile errors, and (iii) passing --enable-final in debian/rules won't propagate to 3rd-party apps either through admin/ or through the dh_make template. This solution is most pleasing to me since it satisfies my desire for an --enable-final KDE build and yet resolves the 3rd-party app / 3rd-party packager problem that you have identified. Enabling it again when HEAD gets packaged is ok with me but for now until december it doesn't make much sense to have it enabled anyway. Sure, I won't even be looking at it until we get to packaging HEAD. I probably wouldn't even be arguing so much now, except that I anticipate that when I do prepare KDE 3.2 packages and add --enable-final to debian/rules, there will be arguments about inconsistencies between defaults in different modules. Sure. That was the sense behind removing it from debianrules - add it to debian/rules directly across the KDE modules :-) In other news, koffice-i18n has just been accepted, so it should be good for sarge. KDE 3 / KDE 4 compatibility
Hi guys, I'd like to sum up some of my thoughts on how things will proceed with KDE into next year and how we can at least try to get things as easy as possible for the users. Library mess and the prefix The main problem as we all know on debian compared to e.g. SuSE is that it uses /usr as the prefix for all KDE versions. That per se wouldn't be a problem if KDE wouldn't cause problems. For most developers it isn't an issue at all because they just think, use another prefix and be done. SuSE e.g. used /opt/kde for KDE 1 /opt/kde2 for KDE 2 /opt/kde3 for KDE 3 and will probably use /opt/kde4 for KDE 4. This avoids collisions with packages totally but this doesn't make KDE better in terms of usage with systems that use a single prefix. The result was that during the KDE 2 to KDE 3 move, KDE didn't take care enough of libraries and kde modules in terms of major numbers for libraries and the installation location of modules. One reason for this has certainly been that sometimes a library can be a module at the same time. This requires installing the library itself plus the symlinks up to the major version plus the .la file so it gets accessible via dlopen as a module. When a major version increas happens, the library packages will collide in the .la file necessarily. We've tried to reduce this and to clean up KDE 3 to some extend but this hasn't been completed yet. Last week at the developer conference when we had Matthias Ettrich's talk about Qt 4 coming next year, it got obvious that KDE will switch to Qt 4 as soon as possible for the project. That means that KDE 3.2 will probably be the last release that will stay compatible with KDE 3 and the next major release will be KDE 4; there won't be too much time to make a KDE 3.3 release. For those who after the release of sarge will want to continue using sarge with all of it's KDE programs that rely on kdelibs4 (from KDE 3.x) this will turn out to be a problem as soon as they want to use KDE 4 - the same nightmare will happen to those programs like with KDE 2 programs as soon as KDE 3 got installed on woody. The solution is therefore to make sure that libs that are modules as well become a separate file as a module. I talked to Dirk and this has already happened to the annoying libkhtml, effectively we now have /usr/lib/libkhtml.so.* /usr/lib/kde3/khtmlpart.so/.la This allows us to move the libkhtml.la file from the kdelibs4 package to the kdelibs4-dev package. For all libkdeinit_ libraries Dirk has told me that .so and .la files can safely be moved to the -dev package as well. The only outstanding issues now are libkdeprint_mananagement.la (lib and module, needs split-up like khmtl) /usr/lib/kaddprinterwizard.so/.la which should be a module and is installed at the wrong location. I already have the above issues fixed and will commit updated install files and a changed control file that introduces a conflict for kdelibs4-dev with kdelibs4 ( 4:3.1.90). On the libkdeprint_management and kaddprinterwizard I'm still trying to get those issues fixed. Effectively this will mean that a user who will have sarge installed can: - upgrade to KDE 3.2 once released - upgrade to KDE 4 once he has kdelibs4_3.2.0 or higher installed that will bring a non-conflict against kdelibs5 for KDE 4 for kdelibs4. For unstable, this will mean that when KDE 3.2 gets in we don't have to conflict to KDE 4 for the applications that are based on KDE 3 libs but can be installed at the same time; so the user can have kdelibs4 and kdelibs5 installed. I'm not yet sure how this will work out on the kdelibs-bin package yet; I hope that won't have any influence. What I would like to know is now (probably calc and bab can say somethng there): - do we have the same issues with arts and koffice and kdebase ? Matt would prefer to get them build from the release tarballs with patchsets against CVS if you need them - however, this is none of my business so you might want to check with Matt how to proceed with your next upload as that's probably the last chance to do it the way the security team would like to have things done for sarge. For one thing, we always need the updates from branch, KDE is notoriously buggy, just look at the bug list sometime ;). However, the orig.tar.gz in 99% of the cases is the KDE_3_1_X_RELEASE export minus all the autocrap and CVS dir crap that upstream ships in their tarballs. If debian f*cking supported decent change support, not just text diff then this could be 100% the case. Sometimes binary files change (eg png's) and in those cases I have to stuff them in orig.tar.gz since going through the uuencode/etc process is a REALLY BIG PITA. The resulting diff.gz that is I know that also. The java stuff contains binaries as well, so this was kind of hard to track down if you update from the branch. At least I try to use the release tarballs in my woody builds which worked quite ok for 3.1.3 and I guess 3.1.4 will be smooth as well. I wonder why the CVS dirs are not supported though; they contain the release tag and even if you'd update from CVS or use the branch the security team could track down the information by the revision number that your orig.tar.gz would ship in the CVS dirs. I will never ship pristine upstream tarballs due to the CVS dir issue which Debian officially doesn't want either... so its a no win situation, someone in Debian will always be bitching. I know :-( Chris BTW - I make it a habit to never fix things directly in the diff.gz, if needed I make debian specific changes and then create diffs for them in the debian/patches dir. Based on the latest discussion regarding package splitting with kde-i18n, my initial plan is to simply upload 30 different koffice-i18n-foo binary packages plus an additional koffice-i18n metapackage. For reference, the koffice-i18n sources are 19MB bzipped, hence the package splitting. Please let me know if anyone has problems with this. Ugh, why do you want to introduce a metapackage ? Is there a reason for that ? kde-i18n doesn't have nor need one either :-) Ralf Ben. :) -- We're not a company, we just produce better code at less costs. Qt 3.2.1 missing support for Xcursor....
Hi, while doing a regular backport of qt-3.2.1-1 to woody for the next KDE release I found that my original diff missed a dependency to xcursor-dev - sorry I forgot about that. Martin: it would be also cool if you could add the changes I made in the diff.gz I sent you to the changelog file, such as: - moved .qmake.cache build files to the -dev packages under /usr/share/ qt3/.qmake.cache - use --sysconfdir and --translationdir for Qt resource files as new options, defaults to /etc/qt3 and /usr/share/qt3/translations - remove obsolete qt_it_was_me debconf postinst/prerm I will try to find out if there were more patches in qt-copy (I think there are one or two fixes for qt-3.2.1 already in) and if there are patches available for gcc-3.3 over the next couple of days. I caught a very bad flu in Nove Hrady so I will stay at home, however I won't be able to work full time on that stuff. Ralf -- We're not a company, we just produce better code at less costs. qt - c102 still needed ?
Hi, one thing I forgot in my last mail - is the c102 stings in the packages still required or is the gcc transition over so those can be removed safely now and go back to the original package names ? That has all trolltech-unapproved patches in, so one diff should be quite sufficient to catch the two changes that are in qt-copy already. Don't use the patches directory though in your build until we've figured out what's changed where. Re: #194475: libqt3-mt-dev: library compiled without STL support?
On Samstag, 30. August 2003 21:33, Chris Cheney wrote: Ralf, Do you know why STL is being disabled on Qt3 for Debian? Martin said you said it breaks lotsa stuff. However, the bug reporter mentions that other dists use it... He's wrong. I'm working closely with the SuSE packager on those issues to keep a level of compatibility. When we had STL enabled, it broke apps from compiling because developers use SuSE for developing Qt/KDE apps (guess why that was so...) That's why we disabled it to not cause any trouble for some apps to compile it. If you want to use Qt's STL there's a define that you need to pass in your CXXFLAGS=-DQT_STL for those programs that depend on the Qt STL support (which are the minority compared to the other fraction). If I remember correctly, I had this documented in the README.Debian in qt-x11-free - If you can't find it there tell me to add it (or add the above yourself :) Ralf Ralf Thanks, Chris Cheney -- We're not a company, we just produce better code at less costs.
