Thanks for the additional information. I'm downgrading to important 
since this doesn't seem to affect several machines. If other people 
experience this bug, please report.
Alberto, is unplugging the cable/turning the scanner off before kooka 
startup a complete workaround, which lets you use kooka for scanning 
even with this user? Until you can identify which configuration is 
problematic, please report if you're able to reproduce this issue with a 
second user
