Bug#374214: Improve integration of of kdmrc changes done from KDE and those from dpkg

We've passed this report to upstream, but haven't gotten a fix yet. I'll give the upstream report a prod. Cheers, Christopher Martin Thanks. To the extent this involves dpkg, isn't it Debian-specific? I agree there's some upstream work involved too. Well, I doubt we either could or would want to change the way conffiles are updated by dpkg. I think that by getting upstream to fix how kdmrc is altered by the KDM Control Centre module (not stripping comments, etc.), then users updating would get a usable amount of 'diff' output to judge whether or not to replace their kdmrc or keep their own copies. These include deleting all the comments. On subsequent apt-get upgrade's I get the message that kdmrc has been customized, and that the installer will leave it alone. It would be nice if the changes made from KDE to kdmrc were less radical, and if these could be integrated smoothly into dpkg's upgrade process. The current changes are so extensive that, at least for me, running ediff on kdmrc vs kdmrc.dpkg-dist didn't yield useful information about which changes to merge. I don't know if the kdm package is the home of the control center tools that rewrite kdmrc. If it is not, it might be appropriate to reassign this wish to there. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (990, 'stable'), (50, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.4.27advncdfs Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages kdm depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.1 Debian configuration management sy ii kdebase-bin 4:3.5.3-2 core binaries for the KDE base mod ii kdebase-data 4:3.5.3-2 shared data files for the KDE base ii kdelibs4c2a 4:3.5.3-1 core libraries and binaries for al ii libc6 2.3.6-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libgcc1 1:4.1.0-4 GCC support library ii libpam-runtime0.79-3.1 Runtime support for the PAM librar ii libpam0g 0.79-3.1 Pluggable Authentication Modules l ii libqt3-mt 3:3.3.6-2 Qt GUI Library (Threaded runtime v ii libstdc++6 4.1.0-4The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-6 2:1.0.0-6 X11 client-side library ii libxau6 1:1.0.0-3 X11 authorisation library ii libxdmcp6 1:1.0.0-4 X11 Display Manager Control Protoc ii libxtst6 1:1.0.1-3 X11 Testing -- Resource extension ii xbase-clients 1:7.0.1-2 miscellaneous X clients Versions of packages kdm recommends: ii logrotate 3.7.1-3Log rotation utility -- debconf information excluded -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
