I guess it is not easy as kwrited is a daemon on its own in KDE 4 while it is
a kded module in KDE 3. While kwrited daemon can be given access to utmp
group, it is not safe to do that for the whole kded. So I guess this cannot be
fixed (esp. in stable). Sorry.

Great. What is required to get that fix into Lenny? Debian Edu is
working on our Lenny release and would love to have it fixed there.
Is the patch easy to backport?

Happy hacking,

Bug#526461: kwrited module do not work - no shutdown message show up

2009-05-01 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: konsole
Version: 4:3.5.5a.dfsg.1-6etch2
Severity: important
User: debian-...@lists.debian.org
Usertag: debian-edu

The kwrited module in KDE is supposed to pass on wall messages to the
user. This is important when for example a shutdown request is
running and is announcing a future shutdown. This message need to
reach logged in console users, also if they do not use any terminal
programs. This do not happen. I believe it is related to bug
#103864, based on the comments I found on
http://markmail.org/message/66tip4jmunuwandi>. The problem seem
to be the access to the utmp file. Please fix kwrited, as it is vital
in a school environment to let the users know that their computer is
going to shut down.
