I deleted kmix (which refused to start) and installed the "veromix" applet to 
get volume control. This solved my two issues:

1. no volume control because kmix did not start

2. the desktop system was freezed until the kde greeting sound, maybe, I 
guess, because kmix was trying to start (now the desktop system is responsive 
and ready to start programs before the kde greeting sound).
