Yes, that was it. I set my display size in xorg.conf and qt applications started working again.

OK, this is the same as http://bugs.debian.org/384325 and you might want to
try the workaround explained in the next-to-last mail,

This is definitely a Qt problem, not fireglcontrol's. I'm going to reassign
this bug to Qt and merge it with #384325 unless someone can show me that
something in fireglcontrol is helping this bug to come out.
