Is there a reason for this ?

From a discussion about this a while ago I remember the reasoning was that
if you need to depend on mirrors for security, the users might have to
wait too long for the distribution of the data to those mirrors.

Then again, it might be handy to have a semi-transparent mirror for the
rare occasional disaster or to have some time for hardware/software

Hi,

it has been confirmed that the Twente University server rooms have now
completely burned down. This means, {security,non-us,nm,qa}.debian.org
and ftp.snt.utwente.nl are now lost. Rest in peace...

To translate and summarize http://www.webwereld.nl/nieuws/13242.phtml:
"The fire started a little after 8AM CET. There are no casualties.
The near Dutch-German internet exchange will take over some of the SURFnet
activities. The network will probably be up again tomorrow, with help from HP.
A new server room in another building was already being prepared anyway for
use next month..."

And yes, also in the Netherlands it's highly unusual that such a fire
happens.

Hi,

security.debian.org (aka non-us.debian.org aka satie.debian.org) and
ftp.snt.utwente.nl are down, due to fire in Twente University.
It's not at all lost yet, that would be a major blame. The Surfnet
trouble tickets say that All computers in the building have been turned
off, that's all - yet.

No need to panic, #debian-devel on IRC has already been notified and
the security team will pick up on it.

if you need to depend on mirrors for security, the users might have to
wait too long for the distribution of the data to those mirrors.

Then again, it might be handy to have a semi-transparent mirror for the
rare occasional disaster or to have some time for hardware/software
maintenance.

IIRC, they advise of that when debconf'ing some X packages

Mirror Site Security

2002-11-20 Thread Jan H. van Gils
Hi,

Well lets hope that the fire doesn't make and casualties.

But the question remains, where is the mirror for security.debain.org ?
All the debian related data is mirrored somewhere but the security site
can't be found anywhere else !

Is there a reason for this ?

We (here, at Czech Republic) have debian-security mirror hosted at
ftp://ftp.sh.cvut.cz/debian-security. Hope it helps & folks from CVUT
won't kill me because of traffic :)

Bye.

Re: security.debian.org down

2002-11-20 Thread Pieter-Paul Spiertz
Hi,

it has been confirmed that the Twente University server rooms have now
completely burned down.

And yes, also in the Netherlands it's highly unusual that such a fire
happens.

Regards,
Pieter-Paul

security.debian.org down, mirror needed

2002-11-20 Thread Richard van den Berg
security.debian.org is hosted by the University of Twente in The
Netherlands (www.utwente.nl). Their data center caught fire a few hours
ago. As a result their class B (130.89.0.0/16) disappeared from the
internet. A news article mentions that most servers and infrastructure
has been distroyed.

Is it possible to set up a mirror somewhere for the time being?

Just about 2 minutes before your mail, one was sent explaining
Short summary:

Fire at the location of security.debian.org. Unfortunately I don't know
any mirrors (yet).

After looking for reasons on why I can't connect to security.debian.org
But unable to find one, I ask it in this mailing list.

Maybe someone can also give me a mirror site for "stable/update"

security.debian.org down

2002-11-20 Thread Pieter-Paul Spiertz
Hi,

security.debian.org (aka non-us.debian.org aka satie.debian.org) and
ftp.snt.utwente.nl are down, due to fire in Twente University.
It's not at all lost yet, that would be a major blame. The Surfnet
trouble tickets say that All computers in the building have been turned
off, that's all - yet.

No need to panic, #debian-devel on IRC has already been notified and
the security team will pick up on it.

Regards,
Pieter-Paul Spiertz
