I think the subscription process is supposed to serve this purpose to
some small degree. Though it seems that the assumption that one can
unsubscribe if one is able to subscribe doesnt seem to be a good one in
all cases.

Notice how you're suppose to send this to REQUEST not just
debian-security? This isn't a personal attack, but you and many
others have missed paying attention to DETAIL.

This is one reason you're not being unsubscribed, you're NOT following
instructions correctly.

If that fails, follow the instructions for 'trouble?'.

Thanks.

Hi Listreaders,

I just found exim's(3) config file in woody is installed with 0644 file
permission by default. This might be okay for standard-installation, but might
that not rise a security bug as soon, as you use either
 - client side authentification and have to insert the password there
   somewhere?
 - an other backend as /etc/passwd or simmilar? For example getting
eMail-adresses from ldap or any other database needs some password to
   connect to it.

Might it be not more secure installing /etc/exim/exim.conf 0640 with root:mail
file-permission?

I am not shure about that, so i did not open a bug at the BTS yet.

Please give me advice.

The { and } aren't supported in procmail regular expressions whether
escaped or not. You can use only *, +, and ? for matching different
number of characters.

Why not just have

I wonder how people manage to subscribe in the first place.

The list should be set up to require active action when subscribing (ie.
the confirmation letter should come with "Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]" or
something, and people would actually have to paste the correct address
after redaing the instructions).

Would filter the lowest IQ people off.

Filtering on a subject basis seems too dangerous to me, and filtering on
a subject + body basis may still let some messages through. Anyway, the
Debain mailing lists are open, non-moderated, delivering mail as quickly
as possible. They allow even ads from time to time (there was a $1000
fine for commercial messages IIRC, is there still one?), so these
"unsubscribe" messages are just peanuts. "Be open to everyone and
everything" is part of the lists's policy, I think.

In today's world of daily (or even hourly) spam and "I can't log into my
Yahoo! account" messages, people have to get used quickly. Then are you
really so concerned with these "unsubscribe" messages that you create
threads on them (at least once a month) in the debian-*security* mailing
list? Or you just like having a chat? Because that is what I am doing
right now. I don't care about:

HEY, BOBBY!!! I haven't heard from you since I implemeted linked lists
in C macros, or maybe even since I was making the computer synthesize
the sound of puking (am I starting to forget?). A nice place to meet
you -- the security list. A more physical one may feel better, huh? If
you happen to find yourself in one, drop a line, please! You can find me
in the same old place in front of the computer. See you.

Oh, great *phew* :)

Meanwhile the first poster "injected" a really good idea into my mind...
why not filter away those messages? As the list still will send them, I
have to do that on my pc. Using procmail this would be easy, but I also
read my mails on Win2k with Mozilla. I did not think about the fact that
Mozilla features some very nice mail filter possibilities... now those
messages won't bug me anymore :))
