Did you use tabs in your smb.conf file? (^I==tab char)?

Yes.  the ^I Tabs have been removed... However, it does not explain the 
below.. The host name does not appear in smb.conf  It is a Win2000 
Professional laptop on the same network.  None of the Win2000 or Samba 
configs have changed in months.

That just says the currentg master browser (A windows thing) is FRE-LAPTOP2 
(presumably on your network).
The master browser is who keeps your subnet's name list.  Kind of like the
sub-nets DNS server for smb/nmb...

Note: Setting samba to participate in master browser elections is a bad idea
as it sometimes mucks up the network..
